Idunno I'm not entirely with OP on that one - notice how there are no details on her previous character deaths other than "because she was good". The only reason I don't agree with the death of Siri was she is in flight mode after finding out her twin sister, my backup character, was already dead and it was all her fault and it was never talked about with me. It wasn't until a session later that all of us were told what happened to her even though me and the rest of the group had joked about her living in LA and changing her name to Alexa since that was meant to be her original name, I just accidentally named her Siri instead.

While this can sound like a broken record, it’s always a good idea to ask: “Is this your first time playing at a hardcore table? Are you okay with making this choice under real world weaponry mechanics? Are you absolutely certain that you want to make noise with this action?” Manchild having the entire table at re-roll when new player joins may seem normal, but in this case, it was clearly a warning sign at poor DM preparation.

I'm seeing a lot of people call the others in the group "doormats" for "letting Manchild walk all over them". The thing is, none of them did. they tried over and over again and he constantly made them feel like it wasn't safe or worth their time to even try. I feel like a lot of people don't understand that toxic friends can and do abuse people as much as toxic partners do. I've had a long time friend who was emotionally abusive and I couldn't confront her on anything without either her playing the victim, having a meltdown, or making me feel like I was the Bad Guy for not liking how she treated me. All of the yelling and nastiness was in fact verbal abuse, and none of them are in the wrong bc none of them TRIED to 'let it happen'. I really don't understand how people can read 'we confronted him and he screamed at us until we were so stressed and upset we cried' and think the people being made to feel like such complete shit and like the situation was so hopeless to change are the ones who were truly wrong.
@Mordring

Salvation lies within. As someone who has been mistreated by people calling themselves my friends (and a couple love interests) I have all the sympathies for those who suffer from abuse. But I also know that the defining moment is the one when you stand up for yourself for the first time and say "never again". And that decision is ultimately always internal. That's why people can't stand it when someone let's themself be abused for weeks, months, years. From the outside it is easy "just F***in say NO once!". For them it's easy, they say "no" all the time. But we know how hard it can be... That being said, standing up for yourself is the ONLY path to happiness and healthy relationships in future. As long as one refuses to fight, nothing ever changes. As such, I think some of that internet tough love is necessary for more victims of abuse to realise that what's happening to them is not OK, is not widely accepted by the society, and fighting for themselves does not make them bad people. Trust your guts guys and gals, if your guts tell you something's not right with that person, it probably isn't and in such case you're justified to not be nice to them anymore. By being an abuser they waived their rigtht of polite social treatment.

I mean, after so long, you HAVE to recognize that “talking it out” isn’t going to work and have to kick him. If you’ve talked to him and it’s brought you AND other people to tears, and you keep him around while meekly asking him to stop, I can’t feel much sympathy because you really aren’t doing anything to stop it. It’s like a mother just telling their kid over and over to not beat people up, while the kid continues to punch another person: if the mom never decides to physically step in to reprimand him, she’s somewhat at fault for what this kid is doing. So yeah, they can talk as much as they’d like to him, but the fact is that he didn’t want to change, and they kept him around despite that. Ops unfortunately got the backbone of a wet noodle here.

If he's a "friend", then I don't want to see a proper enemy. Is Manchild bad? Beyond bad, he's shown time and time again that he's far from stable emotionally. If his first reaction is to go "NOT FUN!" when things aren't in his favor, then he's an S+ Tier sociopathic narcissist. God this DM reminds me of the one DND group I had outside my usual team, and the DM I think didn't like me or just was on a power trip, because, no joke, in the very first session, he let my character I had been planning for weeks, die in one of the first rolls of the game. I didn't have a backup character, because I was still sort of new and wasn't aware of those, and have never needed one before. But yeah I think he was trying to kill me, because 3 of the 5, players had kinda made some meat head big strong characters, and mine was one of them, (even though I'm a girl irl) maybe it was all of the stepping on eachothers toes in game or all the testosterone, but yeah, it was a stab with an enchanted skeletons blade that incinerated him instantaneously, and, (I think we an act of mercy) the 4th character, an elf sorcerer, gathered his bones and dust for safe keeping, (this was my public speaking professor at the time as well as the only other female on the team,) so I had to slap dash together another character in a week, and made a tiefling dwarf cleric that was part of my prior paladins temple, and from then on I just felt like the teams punching bag. I kept making excuses for it though, because to be fair, I kept getting bad rolls, but this DM was just disproportionately brutal!! In the end my character got slashed by (I forget the name of the creature), and from the legs up my characters body started turning to stone, and this went on for sessions as I was stuck in a basket strapped to one of my teams back, getting carried around and I was basically just around to heal people. My stone legs crumbled off, and I shit you not, once we finally got the potion to cure my stone illness, we have a run in with ANOTHER stone illness creature!!! And I am back to square one!! Maybe it's hindsight bias but it felt like the DM was getting a kick out of hurting my character and it sucked. I think the other party members started noticing it too because they would go out of their way to try and help me out and accomodate to try to keep me included, or plea on my behalf to have some kind of mercy on my character. I didn't want special treatment, but I just wanted to be able to function and play the game as best as I could! And when the DM would resist and try to defend his harsher consequences with my character the group would get quiet and awkward. At the very end, where I was determined to stay included in the adventure, there was this giant crevasse we needed to see what was at the bottom of it, so I suggested they lower my legless dwarven self in my basket backpack, down with a rope, and since I was a tiefling and a dwarf I had dark vision. No shit, the rope broke and I fell stories down onto a ledge and obliterated what was left of one of my already stumpy stone leg nubs. Turns out, there's spiders down there!!! The group lowers a second role and I hear a shelob crawling up to get me, So I decide I'm gonna balance myself on my remaining leg nub, and jump it to the rope that was hanging out of reach. For once. For damn once, i leap, and I got a nat 20!!! And we're all cheering and I grab the rope, and I look at my DM and he looks mad at me!! Or at least annoyed. I swear I'm not trying to be petty or make assumptions but I really do think he wanted my character to just die! I don't think he liked me. That, or I think he just liked to be overly harsh on all the players to boost his own ego. After our group class was done, we all went out separate ways. There wasn't exactly a complete resolution to the story, but in hindsight I really think he had it out for me, and I think all of us in the party had a bit of distain for his sadistic low role punishments and strict rules. My current party is much more fun to play with!!

Also, “classes” in CP2020 are not classes in the same way they are in D&D, where as you level up you gain new abilities. In fact, CP2020 doesn’t have character levels, just skill levels. Classes don’t provide any new abilities except one specific class skill. You level up class skills by essentially spending Improvement points into any skill you want (with exceptions being the class specific skills).

I listen to lots of cringe before but its so obvious that when someone makes you cry this much you should leave (coming from someone who recently just left a year long relationship dealing with this) but ofc not blaming op, its hard to do especially to a friend. But when it physically and mentally hurts and pains you to play A GAME with them and they take it out on you IRL that is your sign to wake up look at them and tell them to leave. No need for an epic troll that alot of these r/'s do, this is real. Get up and leave them. Don't be friends with them. Same to any of you reading this in the same situation with a friend, family member, or loved one. Its hard, its not always that easy, but put your foot down and tell them they are a shitty person and distance yourself from that person as much as possible, cut back on the amount of interaction you have with that person. I've had multiple experiences in my short time of playing where certain people just don't mesh well with how I personally like to play. For example I find it completely unfair for a single person to always over power a players voice. It's also really annoying when as soon as the fight finishes (literally the dm is still talking) and someone ( always the same person) I loot the body.... every single battle before anyone gets a chance they always shout out I loot all the bodies 🙄 no one else every gets a chance at loot because of the one person that always gets it first ALWAYS. I'd be okay it if happened a couple times but literally every single time gets really annoying. You really do have to find a good group where all the people mesh well together

I do sympathize, truly I do. However, this all could have been avoided if the GM or the players grew a backbone. I've dealt with terrible players, some have made me cry and I've allowed people to walk on me like a doormat. Allowing them to continue their shit fits and simply trying to be diplomatic with bullheaded people rarely if ever works. You have to be able to put your foot down, even if they're your friend. Hell, *especially* if they're your friend. And if they still refuse to listen, boot their ass and don't speak for a while, telling them what they did wrong and let them simmer about it. If they change their attitude, maybe give them another chance. If not, and I mean this as tactfully as possible, *fuck 'em*. Never speak to them again. If they won't reciprocate the work needed to form a healthy relationship, tell them to fuck off and never talk to them again. It just bothers me people allow themselves and their friends to be hurt for so long. I can get it, sure, but to let it go on for so long with so many chances to change, it's almost infuriating seeing it happen because all parties are responsible, not just the chronic dickhead. Apologies for the rant.

2:30 so… I’m pretty sure anyone who knows what a gun is knows that they are loud… (agreeing with crab here). And… I wouldn’t say not implementing backstories into a campaign means they hate backstories. A long time DM for me asks for backstories but they almost never come up. They don’t hate them they just don’t want to put in the time to try and fit it in the story. Edit: 4:10 So assuming this is true considering OP didn’t deny it, it’s not ok to constantly ask for money from friends. Not saying they should have done what they did in game or even that they should have made fun of you for it but… that may have been their awkward way of telling you to stop. Edit:edit: 14:00 yea… that’s just complete disregard for everything role play and story I don’t think they were being malicious. I just think they believed that part of the game didn’t matter (assuming people didn’t complain about it and it still happened) Edit:edit:edit: So man child is a MUCH worse player than DM. That’s not to say they are a good DM. Let’s put it this way. If I was a player in a game they DM’d I would leave. If I was a player in a game they played in, I would punch them in the face. The amount of shit OP and the other players had to deal with when he was a player is unacceptable.

I mean, from OP's story this man seems like a terrible DM. He causes OP to have no access to money in-game, then when confronted about it tells him to deal with it in-game. Like, how is OP supposed to do that if the DM doesn't allow for it? This was only further reinforced by the whole debacle of the first group being unable to find OP's group.

Hot take: high mortality games are stupid. Character creation is a time-consuming and often very personal process. Treating PCs as disposable just wastes everyone's time, kills the mood, and neuters personal investment. How are people supposed to feel attached to a story when you could pull the rug out from under them at any moment? Why even bother thinking up a backstory that will never have a payoff? Might as well just use nameless pre-gen nobodies.

I think there’s a major difference in a lethal game and a high mortality game. A lethal game shifts focus towards planning, caution and preparation. A high mortality game is ‘let’s see how much random bullshit we can do and can have happen to us.’ Or, to use examples. Dnd 5e is a very forgiving game that rewards going out and doing stuff. High rewards for high investment. Call of Cthulu is a game that rewards being cautious and planning ahead. Also high rewards for high investment. Dungeon Crawl Classics is a high mortality game. It rewards creativity and leaning into extreme nonsense. Low investment on purpose. The character sheets prove this difference in a way. It takes me about 15-30 minutes to roll up a character for DnD or CoC. I died in a boss fight in DCC and had a new character before my next round and had them enter the fight because my wizard was crammed into the chest the boss threw at another player.

I can't help but feel sorry for OP when it comes to dealing with Manchild online. I don't know how sites like roll20 do their thing but I assume it's at least similar to discord (if they weren't using discord). Yes it's easy for us to turn around and say "just mute them or kick 'em" but for a lot of people eve that can take courage. I call myself a coward, and I'm not afraid to admit that ironically, but I know for a fact I would be more than able to drum up the courage to mute/kick or ban someone from vc if needed. But that is me! I am me, not someone else. So yeah, while I do agree that OP should have muted/kicked/banned Manchild. I don't blame them for being unable to for either being too stressed (they were in tears ffs) or just lacking courage. Perhaps if they had a mod it would have helped matters? Hindsight is 20/20 and at least they all tried talking to Manchild first.

@@Draqer PRO TIP: If you're DM'ing via Discord, make sure it's your own server. :V But yeah, I can understand not being able to deal with this. Social interaction is difficult enough already. Personally, I'd at least mute this guy when he's talking over someone else and disrupting the game... but then again I've never had to deal with such a problem player, myself.

I second the silencer thing. However, if I were the GM, I would give players time to look at the rulebook first before we play the game just to make sure they know stuff like this.
