Small detail I caught about the Alternate in Volume 2: It's implied that the reason why the woman over the phone asked for Adam and Jonah to stay for three nights specifically is because Adam said, "We can do tonight if you want." She subtly mistook "tonight" as "two nights," foreshadowing her identity as an Alternate by not getting a full grasp on being human.

When I get a second, better look at the false prophet's face, it doesn't seem THAT scary. But as somebody with a very strong subconscious fear of distorted faces that occasionally makes me have night terrors, the first time I saw it the face really unsettled me. I think it's because, it doesn't matter if something distorts in a cartoonish way or not, as long as something is 'off' in any way it will always give us the creeps.
@andrewmanchiraju8005
@andrewmanchiraju8005 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like how much someone finds the false Shepard face creepy can be related to how religious they are (not necessarily but it could be). I’m not all that religious (technically not even Christian) and find the face a little on the goofy side, but Wendigoon is fairly religious and says this was the most disturbing thing to him which actually makes sense as the idea of the thing you’ve been worshiping being distorted beyond recognition is inherently disturbing. If I saw one of my gods presented in a similar fashion I would probably have a similar reaction for seeing something that is a figure which represents the divine being twisted into something else.
@comcap135
@comcap135 2 жыл бұрын
As someone who is christian, my first reaction with the false Shepard was way more scary than i thought it would be. You’re probably right with what you said, but i can see it more as goofy mainly from sr pelo’s parody of mandela catalogue

I was raised not religious (and am still not), but I was also raised in, and very close to, many churches, many of which had bizarre and terrifying indoctrination rituals, the Gabriel picture scares the hell out of me, but it’s a bit tamer than the other disturbing images. I think you hit it right on the head, how scary you find the image depends on how familiar you are with what is being distorted/utilized.

@SolaAzevedo
@SolaAzevedo 2 жыл бұрын
I might be biased in this opinion, but I'm not sure it's a matter of how religious you are on not, but how affected you are by the uncanny valley. I, for one, am not very religious, but I do find the face distortions and "inhuman features" of the alternates quite chilling. I also tend to gravitate away from games that try to be hyperrealistic, the slight inhumanity in their movements and animations deeply unsettle me. I also think that the context of the series matters. To me, there's something chilling about a creature that can freely transform in front of you to freak you out and decides to do a warped smile - almost like it's mocking you, knowing that it has already won this battle.

To be honest, I'm not really scared by the Mandela Catalogue, (mostly because I was introduced thanks to the Intruder memes more than anything), but I really do love the concept and world building surrounding it. Like, the idea of a creatures trying to imitate and replace you is neat and all, but when you add the element that they're basically demons preparing to overtake the Earth now that God and Jesus are out of the picture, it makes the alternates all the more intimidating and foreboding.

Honestly, I kinda hate that people have to do that. Suicide is a serious topic and making creators use creative euphemisms turns it into a joke. You can't ban discussion of a serious topic because it very quickly becomes a joke. It punishes people for treating stuff correctly and results in a lot of actually not advertiser friendly discussion of it. Don't get me wrong, I understand why creators do that and I'd rather they do it than just not discuss what they're discussing, but KZbin's decision is shooting everyone in the foot including themselves.

A theory I have is that the "Department of Temporal Phenomena" or some form of it has existed for a very long time and that is due to the roman numerals used in their logo. The roman numeral used for "4" is "IIII" instead of "IV" and the numeral of "IIII" was only used between the 13th and 17th century. For me that gives a rough idea when humans in power realized there was a threat.

@boneenthusiast8530

Sorry for my limited understanding of sinning, but I think the reason that killing yourself is a one way ticket to hell is because killing *anyone* is sinful. And when you kill yourself, you can't repent and be forgiven by god for it before you die. Killing someone is a pretty ineffective way to get more people into hell, but getting them to kill themselves is a guaranteed add to your demonic army (if that's what the false shepherd actually wants, but just getting people to kill themselves without any ulterior motive of getting more to work with seems kinda "evil for the sake of evil")

This was excellent! 👏 👏 👏 One thing I'd like to point out, during the training tape for 911 operators, it's very obviously edited by an alternate. So the tape shows a screen with: POLICE FIRE MEDICAL At 12:24 in this video. Notice how the text is in all caps and a font that's been used throughout the training video for titles. At 12:29 in this video, the title comes up for encounters written like: encounter Notice how it's in a completely different font, at the bottom of the title card, and it's written all in lower case. This is a font that's been used in other videos with alternates. It was the same font used for the "an intruder" text. Before the title card for encounter, the whole screen glitches with VCR tracking static. It looks like it's a part that's been tampered with and something is taped over something else. Back in the day, I'd record different TV shows and re-use the same VHS tapes and record stuff over previous recordings. Whenever I'd tape over something else, I'd get that artifacting at the start of the 2nd recording. Someone, an alternate or similar entity, definitely recorded over the original video. The part that's been altered (lol) by the alternates is the part that tells 911 operators to not send help to active alternate encounters no matter what. Tl;dr: So basically, the whole "policy" of don't send help for alternate attacks isn't a real rule made by police. All of it, from the title, "encounter," to the text to speech saying "nothing is worth the risk," over and over again, was all an edit alternates made to the training tape. It's rather obviously done so alternates can drive their victims mad in peace without having to deal with the pesky emergency 1st responders, especially police with their weapons.

Fantastic breakdown as always Sagan. I've always thought it weird that the Mandela police dept. have so many "how to identify an alternate" programs that highlight all of the differences between alternates and regular humans. With the recent increase in Mandela Catalog games that ask you to choose the alternate (or determine if a picture is unusual or not) I am starting to theorize that Mandela PD is fully overrun with Alternates who are using interactive media in order to better learn what humans deem "Normal" to better themselves at copying mankind, hiding in plain site, and claiming more victims. Then again, the alternates with biologically impossible features are terrifying which could be another fear tactic. Then again, maybe I'm looking too deep into it.

12:15 it's important to note that this training video, like most videos in the series, has been manipulated by the alternates or the False Shepard. When it reaches the segment about what to do about an Alternate encounter the voice and font change, implying a new speaker. This is further confirmed in Volume 333 when Lt. Davis sends Ruth to check out a possible alternate situation. The alternates prey on fear, so they're likely trying to spread more fear about them by telling trainees who see this film that alternates are too powerful and you should just give up and listen in horror as another victim is claimed. This could also be hinting that the Alternates do have some form of weakness, perhaps they struggle with group encounters, and they're attempting to dissuade people from discovering that
