I always re-read "Teaching from Rest" every summer. It keeps me grounded and realistic and I plan and purchase new curriculum for the upcoming year.

“Ourselves” by Charlotte Mason printed and bound by Riverbend Press is a gorgeous book, hardcover, sewn binding, flowers on the spine ❤❤ That Excused Absence sounds good. Christians have got to stop acting like public school is the default and normal or like you have to have a special call from God to homeschool. Who has a special call from God to put them in government school and let Caesar raise them? 🤦🏼‍♀️

YESSSSS I agree 100%. The system is broken. Why those think they should send their kids there as Christians is beyond comprehension to me sometimes. It's a place that teaches everything against the Word. It makes NO sense at all.

I just finished "Excused Absence" and it was incredible. I wrote several quotes in my commonplace book to reflect on later. RL Dabney's "On Secular Education" and Sayers' "The Lost Tools of Learning" are both must-reads! I look forward to slowing down this summer and reading some books I've been meaning to get around to, such as "Reading with Purpose" by Nancy Wilson, "Deep Comedy" by Peter Leithart, "Through New Eyes" by James B. Jordan, and some Charlotte Mason material as well. :) If we do not train our children up in the paideia of the Lord, if we throw them to the wolves of secular schools, we cannot be surprised when they come home acting and thinking exactly as the secular world has taught them to. Douglas Wilson said it well in "Excused Absence" that if you see a young teen on the street corner with piercings, bad clothes, and weird hair you can't be shocked, he's doing exactly what he was trained to do. He's been told his whole life that he's just a clump of random cells with no purpose, so of course he will come out thinking so. A church service once a week and a couple hours at home at night is not enough to counteract the inundation they face day in and day out at secular institutions.

My favorite mom/teacher reads right now, "Awaking Wonder" by Sally Clarkson, "Teaching From Rest" by Sarah Mackenzie, "Will They Stand" by Ken Ham, "Read Aloud Family" by Sarah Mackenzie, and "The Call of the Wild and Free" by Ainsley Arment. lol Long list, but all so good! And thank goodness for audio books to listen to them :)

We school year around we actually do a ton of science and history in the summer since we tend to put that on the back burner during the year.

Not going to lie, it never occurred to me to look up books to help me be a better teacher. I’ve just been asking teachers in my life, who support me in our homeschooling journey, on certain methods, mind sets, and expectations when it comes to my approach. Thank you for sharing these.

I have not read any of the books on your list except for Excused Absence. I think I read it not long after it came out as I was studying to be a teacher. I am just starting "The Core" by Leigh Bortins and plan to read "Teaching from Rest" (it's on my shelf!). I also recently finished Know and Tell The Art of Narration (FANTASTIC!!!). I absolutely identify with so much of what you said from my own experience being trained as a teacher in the secular university system and then classroom teaching but now home schooling my own kids. It is so different and yet so exciting to get to pick my own PD!!

Those PD's are usually a waste of time but I do enjoy the ones that offer something that I can actually use in the classroom. I read all the time but now that I'm actually planning to step into homeschooling I want to read more of those types of books. I just finished reading Upgrade this week and I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot about why homeschoolers can be in multiple grades at the same time. I also just finished A Praying Life by Paul Miller which was also great. I plan to read Apostate this summer and many more!

I have various homeschool/teaching books, but I can't ever finish them. I need a sure-fire way to actually read these types of books! Excused Absence sounds fantastic, and Christian Book has it for 89 cents right now! Of course I see it immediately after I placed an order through them... boo!

I sometimes have to set out to read just 1 chapter a day when I'm struggling to finish a book. That always seems to work.

Gotta love the Canon app! Thanks for the Stepping Heavenward recommendation. I skipped over to Amazon and picked up the kindle version for $.99. And you are right, Christians DO need to take their kids out of the public school system. That is not to say that there aren’t still some public schools that are better than others either academically or morally, but we also need to send a message to the government that we do not approve of what they are allowing to be promoted in the government schools. And of course, our children will never truly understand their subjects from a Christian perspective unless we as parents teach it to them that way.
