A lot of comedians drink on stage and they act inebriated but from what I know very few of them drink actual alcohol on stage. These routines are finely crafted, memorized and timed to perfection to fit the time allotment they get at various venues. There is no room for being actually drunk on stage in that business.

@laupstad No, being drunk on stage is the domain of rock bands and old Shakespearean actors. To be a good stand up comedian you need to be able gauge the reaction of the audience and adjust your timing to suit. Real alcohol is a no no.

@@fus149hammer5 Johnny Vegas might be the only comedian I have seen *actually* drunk on stage. I think that clip is over 20 years old and even then only once. How he kept his career after that is beyond me cause it wasn't pretty.

it's worth knowing that at the start of every show he spends time talking to people, finding out names, occupations and of course where they're from. he then weaves a lot of that into his comedy as he did with Neil. glad you enjoyed him. he's very clever and very funny.

My Brother fell foul of this. He went to see him with his friend who is 7ft tall. My Brother is 5'8" and for the entire show they were known as the Giant and his gimp.

I love al Murray. He's actually super clever and knows a lot about history. As a German myself, who grew up mostly in the English speaking world I've heard all the jokes about Germans(including from Al Murray himself) but I really appreciated his documentary series about Germany where he specifically tried not to mention the second world war but to show German culture without the looming cloud of the Nazi era.

Brilliant reaction yet again, Mandy. I'm glad you enjoyed one of our national treasures. 🙂 Al Murray plays a character in his shows - The Pub Landlord. He doesn't drink very much (he sips his drink, and tops his glass up regularly so that you can't tell how much he has consumed) and pretends to get more drunk as the show goes on. The Pub Landlord is a stereotypical bigoted belligerent patriotic Brit who is prepared to argue with anyone, especially about how great Britain is. The show is satirising these types of character by the way they use flawed logic to make their points. He is a very intelligent person, being a history graduate of Oxford University, and has made some brilliant historical documentaries.

A large part of his shows involve audience participation, his main character is an English publican with conservative values & an animosity towards Germans & the French ... he has a 'modern history degree' from Oxford University & has done many great serious documentaries ... hope you do more Al Murray, his explanation of how World Finance works is a good one.

He is very knowledgeable, studied history at Oxford university. He plays a pub landlord in these sketches and is not really drinking alcohol its just part of the act " The point is this" is the phrase he is using that you couldn't get. He uses it all the time, i think its an aide memoire for him too. Enjoy the rest of his work. I would recommend you try Dave Allen's comedy too, in particular " teaching your child to tell the time" he was a very clever irish comedian.

I love Al Murray. He has always been one of my favourite comics. His material and characterisation of the Pub Landlord alter-ego is genius! In real life, he has a degree in History which is why he uses a lot of it in his routines. The man is very clever.

Al Murray is quite the history guy, he knows his stuff. His catchphrase is 'The point is this..' With the national anthem, at the end, he said "You made me look stupid there!" Yeah check out more of his stuff, he's good. Check out 'Jim Jeffries - Gun Control' or 'Freedumb'. Also the Bill Burr 'Helipcopter story' (animated version). Both those guys are my faves.

I think with the Space Race joke, he was talking about how the Soviets dominated the majority of the race. First man-made object into space. First return flight. First man into space. The Soviets were more focused on getting their space travel technology up to snuff, while the Moon Landing (although impressive) was the US's attempt to one-up the Soviets.

Years ago I saw a video (maybe a DVD commentary) and he explained the beer he's drinking I think he described as "unfermented" thus not actually alcoholic... Apparently once air got into the barrel (or something like that) and it started fermenting and part way through a show he started to notice he was getting a buzz and starting to bump into his "bar" during his routine...

Looking at the comments I can see most of the obvious points have been made. All stand up comedians are usually very bright, Al is no exception. The beer pumps and drink are just props for the show. I am not even sure if it’s real ale. Some do find it offensive but it’s just his brand of comedy and not intended to be anything but funny. To be fair he spreads his brand of humour across the world. With The U.K. at the centre ofcourse.

This is just a character Al plays called "The Pub Landlord" and is a parody of patriotic drunkards. He is actually very clued up on history, especially World War II so he does intersperse some genuine facts with his big headed patriotism, which is what makes it even funnier. Not sure whether he is actually drinking lager or not, but the drunken rambling is just all part of the act, not real.
