Do I have to follow every step? My hair is thin, high porosity. I'm not sure if doing the pre-poo treatment will do wonders to my hair... Also, I never diffuse my hair because I like the natural volume it gives me. It's not too big, it goes more down than to the side and I like that shape (keeping in mind I cut a layer to create more volume)

Dear Mell, happy Texture Thursday! This is off topic, but I wanted to tell you something that I think you, Amanda, and the community will find interesting. About a year ago I decided to follow your “universe haircut” tutorial. I have to say I LOVED how my hair looked with that haircut. After that, I would dust my hair every two months just like you instruct in your “no haircut haircut” video. My hair was lovely and healthy. A few months passed by and my hair grew a bit. I realized I had great volume in the back/bottom of my hair but not at the top of my head, and it was getting a bit heavy on the bottom and slightly more triangular at the front. So I was like: “Hm, so I wanna keep my length, but I also want to cut some excess hair.” Like I wanted it to have more layers in the back so that I would have more volume at the top of my head but like to also give it a round shape. So, I didn’t know what to do and I started searching for information. I watched various tutorials and decided to go with one of them that resembled the shape I had in mind. The girl in the tutorial was great as well and she explained everything step by step BUT, Mell, when I tell you my haircut ended up being soooooo uneven…like…it was bad. And, sadly, I didn’t achieve the shape I was going for. I felt like I had just made it shorter. Truth is I think I didn’t follow the tutorial very well. I allowed my hair to grow a bit before going back to cut it again. After about a month and a half I decided to go back to the “universe haircut” video and see what I could do with your info plus the info I had researched. Firstly I cut my bangs, like you showed us. (I usually cut my bangs using the “pigtails haircut” video.) After that, I marked the perimeter and when I made the ponytail, I cut and cut and cut everything that was uneven. Then I cried, because I realized how short I had made it. After regretting it for like two minutes, I let all my hair down and realized it actually didn’t look bad. It was short but even. Even with the longer parts in the front and longer perimeter I thought I was getting somewhere. After that I decided to rewatch your recent short where you make a variation of the “pigtails haircut” and tell us to place the pigtails lower for a rounder look. I did that and it looked lovely. I was kinda almost crying again but with excitement. Then I worked with the perimeter to make it rounder following the rest of the instructions on that same short. Andddd, like you say, I stopped and didn’t get any more scissor happy. I felt happy. I washed my hair and it looked lovely. So…that’s my story. It’s been about a month from that. At first I didn’t know how much of a mistake or a good thing I did. I just know my hair is even now, that somehow I have pretty layers and that my hair looks round. I think it’s a pretty high maintenance haircut though…and I’m still not very sure about how to keep the shape without altering length. I’m thinking on working with the pigtails maybe. It was a weird process for me haha but I’m glad it turned out well. Just wanted to share the rollercoaster with you guys. Thanks always and happy texture Thursday once more!
@NotACat2237 Жыл бұрын
Omg this is almost my exact story, too. I was going to do the updated rounder version on my next wash day, and now I'm excited it will turn out more like I hoped. I don't mind losing some length, I had not had a hair cut in a super long time and was also growing out some coloring I did.
@zoerosado7456 Жыл бұрын
@@NotACat2237 If you mean doing the lower pigtails, they do give beautiful results. I don't think they give roundness in the back on their own but, at least from what Mell showed and my experience, they give a beautiful round frame to the front of the hair.

I'll definitely try double cleansing; I currently only use clarifying shampoo because every time I used my moisturizing shampoo, I would notice it just didn't clean as well and left me with product build-up, frizziness, and greasiness. Using a clarifying shampoo followed by a deep conditioner every wash day has been working quite smoothly so far with really nice and defined results, but maybe double cleansing will provide even better results? Find out next time on: Dragon Ball Z!

No shade on the in-shower tip😉, but for those of us on a sensitive septic system and tight water restrictions (ie: quick showers/no adding in more “just do it in the shower” steps) - i cleanse in shower, rinse, add conditioner (or just co-wash), wrap in turban and get out. My conditioner (or co-wash) can sit a few minutes while i moisturize, etc. Then, with my hair towel/turban on the sink’s edge to catch any dripping, i rinse in sink using a lot less water (and hair shed control!), but still able to then add my stylers to very wet hair- just over the sink instead of in shower. Hope that helps anyone with same circumstances :) Thank you Mel for the great video as always! 🧡👍🧡👍
