As someone with a thyroid condition that causes their hair to fall out (my hair has thinned out a lot over the past couple years), I want everyone to know that you are beautiful and worthy of love and affection regardless of what state your hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes are in. I know that sounds really obvious but losing a lot of hair can feel really demoralizing and scary and be a bit of a confidence killer. You are loved and wanted and beautiful.

@Miss Catastrophe Your hair grows at the rate it grows which is largely genetic. If you eat well, exercise regularly, take your medications responsibly, and generally try to take care of yourself that will optimize your hair, skin, and nails. Hair growth potions, solutions, pills, etc and supplements in general are not well regulated in the US, they make unsubstantiated claims and can even be harmful when combined with other medications or taken at improper doses. I don't mess with that stuff at all and wouldn't encourage anyone else to especially not without first discussing it with their doctor. Honestly, my best piece of advice is to find a hairdresser you like and get regular haircuts to maintain flattering layering that helps to improve volume so you can't tell that your hair has thinned out as much.

Now that I’m not anemic, my hair is growing back curlier and fuller, which is great 😁, but now I have really curly pieces near my scalp and then... not so curly ones from mid to ends. Sophie I did a couple things recommended by my doctor, I got a set of 10 iron injections because my hemoglobin levels were extremely low. I took a iron, B12, B6, D, zinc, copper and folic acid vitamin (it was an all in one vitamin pill thank God except for the Vit D). Ate tons of spinach, beets and legumes, specifically lentil soup. The iron vitamins can mess up your stomach, so I always ate before taking them and followed it up with a cup of orange juice to help with absorption. I wasn’t allowed to drink coffee or tea. And what I found helped a TON (and no nausea) was a mix of beet juice and carrot juice on an empty stomach in the morning for two weeks straight... that shot my hemoglobin levels up real fast. Following all of these recommendations, I was anemia free in three months or so. I hate beet and carrot juice, but every time I get my period I make sure to drink the mix just to make sure my levels don’t go below what’s normal because of blood loss. I just cover my nose and drink up 😋😖. Hope you’re able to recover soon!

Hi Mell, you probably won't see this, but the video means a lot to me. I've experienced several bouts of telogen effluvium for the past 2 years because several traumatic events happened in my family that just seemed to never stop. It seems like the worst has finally passed, but at the expense of what feels like 3/4 of my hair. Just when my hair was starting to recover, another horrible event would happened. I had hair that was even more dense and thicker than Amanda's and now its so much less than what it was. My neck used to hurt from how heavy my hair was and I now I can't feel it. I'm trying to accept that this is temporary and things will get better, but its really hard, and seeing your video has helped a lot. Hearing it from someone whose videos I enjoy and have taught me a lot really helps to assuage some of that fear and just trust the growth process. Thank you.

Thanks so much. My hair has thinned so much as I get older. On the issue of hair color, I'll say this--if you have dark hair and are going gray, either go gray all the way or cover it. But dark hair with gray around your temples creates an optical illusion where your "grays" don't register to the naked eye (the gray kind of disappears when you're looking at the hair as a whole), so it makes it look like you're missing all that hair.

This video’s made me feel so much better, I was literally crying 5 minutes ago. What concerned me initially is that I never used to shed more than ten strands a day when I was young. Now I’m 15, and I don’t know what to do. I have wavy/curly hair and my mum refuses to spend money on curly hair products so I get so tired of my strandy half-curly straight hair, and I detangle every day. And when I do, I see major hair fall.

Oh yes, those hormonal changes... I'm pregnant, and the end of the first trimestr was a horror for my hair. Due to the hormonal changes in my body and the baby growing (plus I was iron defficient) it felt like I lost a third of my hair! It was brutal. On the contrary, hitting the second trimestr, I stopped shedding. Like... totally stopped shedding. I lose no more than 50 strands of hair in 7 days. And yes, I know that I can expect another round of hair loss after giving birth. And all of this seems to be normal. What a rollercoaster! I send all the love and luck to my fellow pregnant curlies. 😘

Ah! I was just going to add to what scientist Mell said! For anyone curious on insight on this, to paraphrase Mama Dr. Jones (OBGYN youtuber): Pregnant people who feel like they're going through either abnormal amounts of hair growth/health and then abnormal amounts of hair loss are experiencing a phenomenon where hair cycles will sync during pregnancy! So abnormal amounts of growth/loss are a result of a larger percentage of your follicles being in the same growth/death cycle at a time! Things un-sync following the end of pregnancy, which is why hair seems to go back to normal! edit: ah, well, should have checked myself - Mell gets into it with telogen effluvium! I wonder if this is what MDJ was talking about, and she just explained it as syncing of follicular phases...

Yup...still watching ;) Love this video :) almost brought me to tears because this has been a struggle the last couple years, especially last year. I have a little serum i put together of a few different carrier oils and some essential oil, especially rosemary, that has either helped a small bit or i was moving into the phase where they grow baby hairs....either way I don't care :) in general my hair is still significantly thinner then normal, for me....others think I'm crazy to say it's thin, but I know what my hair felt like and what it feels like now...you know what I mean? And some parts of the bald spots have baby fuzz...so...I'm hopeful. Gotta be hopeful :) but....this was an awesome video to help me maybe understand some of it. I have RA and other autoimmune issues so I know there's a lot going on so not sure if that or several surgeries (including both knees replaced, hysterectomy and elbows, hands to name a few) in a short period of time and things started it or stress (I know it's partly stress) or just getting older...babbling, sorry....but, this gives me hope and more to think about, in a good way....oh man..I'm gonna go cuz i just keep babbling😳 Anyway...thank you...that's all i meant to say...thank you!🥺🥰

Your presentation was very informative. Thank you for this video, I've learned a lot. Your very funny, I love watching your videos. I will stop stressing about my hair loss, cause like you stated every week is different amount and for me it is. Maybe it's my iron that's causing it because my iron is very low..anyway thanks for the information.

Thank you for mentioning trichtillomania. It took me a few years to find out that what I was doing was common enough and that I wasn't a freak. It's not too uncommon, but people suffering from it tend to think so because it's such a "dirty secret". That said, it is really, really tough to stop and even after 12 years, I'm still pulling out a few hairs a day :/

The iron thing is a nightmare. We're so prone to anemia in my family and I'm awful for keeping track. But if the dizziness doesn't signal me to go back on the iron, the hair loss does. I'm really glad you mentioned it. 😁

Hi ladies. Hormonal shedding during perimenopause is real. I lost about 50% of my hair - fortunately I had a really thick/dense head of hair to begin with. I now have a normal amount of hair compared to other people. I have had some regrowth due to being post menopausal and no longer having all the hormonal fluctuations, but also I started HRT and collagen supplements. I tried biotin - it didn't work for me at all, but collagen seems to have helped a fair bit (having started the collagen and seeing a difference prior to the HRT). Stopping all the heat styling and looking after my hair better has made it shinier/healthier as well. Overall I do have some real regrowth without resorting to minoxidil which would have been my next step. I didn't have visible bald patches, but my hair lost about 50% of the volume of hair from before. I think I have regained another 20% back, so that's exciting. For those who are coping with menopause there has been light at the end of the tunnel re hair loss - at least for me, so don't despair as there are things out there to help. Best wishes.

I've been (silently) watching your videos for a while now and look forward to Texture Tuesdays. You give so much good advice and are so positive. What I really loved about this video is the care you took for each of us to take care of ourselves, from our food intake to our mental state. This year has been a hard year for many of us and you acknowledge that and I truly appreciate you putting a focus on mental health and for people to have someone to talk to. And through all that, you remind us that we are beautiful. That's something we can all use a little, a lot, more of. So thank you. And all the information that you take to research and give us is great. And I can't forget to give kudos to your seester, Amanda for an amazing job editing this and all your videos. You guys make a fantastic team.

I got a bad haircut recently and I have very thick curly hair. The woman cutting my hair said “there is so much hair falling, what’s going on with that?” I told her that I only wash my hair a couple times a week so that’s when I shed the most and I don’t usually take a brush to it the way she did which contributed as well. Then, she commented on it again even though I explained! “Good thing you don’t take heat to your hair since so much of it is falling.” I was wondering why she was trying to make me feel like I had a problem and have felt slightly more paranoid since…
