I was pretty much raised by my mother, my biological father i have never met, and the second marriage was anything but happy. the older i got the more i realized that my "new father" back then was everything but a father figure, did not feel as he cared about me at all, especially since i was not his son from a biological standpoint. I know it is pretty cliche with the questionable circumstances of single parent households, But there is a way to make it work. It is difficult if if those households are all alone though, no family or friends around them to help at least a little bit. But on the plus side, organizations like mentioned in the story do exist, but sadly not enough or not big enough. With proper support it is more likely that the parent, ans especially the child, can live a fulfilling live.

Maybe my vision about the world we live in is too broken already, but I couldn't watch this episode without looking at the bad way this could have gone. It's basically the "don't accept candy from strangers" rule, and in this case the kid and even the mother accepted a "candy" (in this case a sweet juice) from a total stranger. There's no way for them to know the stranger's intention, and if Kenji had any ill intentions, this would have turned real bad.
