I'm not yet ready to tackle jazz, but I feel that when the time comes, I will have a 83.4% jump on the average musician, with such a brilliant explanation of these three basic concepts. I'll just have to learn the 57% of jazz theory that rests.

This is a fantastic lesson! It is easy to follow and understand but i'm sure it will take weeks (months, years?)of review and practice to master. Many thanks for all your youtube instruction over the years - I have learned so much from your lessons!

Thank you so much for this amazing video! Your explanation of the three most important ideas in jazz theory - diatonic motion in fourths, tonicization, and chord substitutions - was incredibly clear and insightful. I especially appreciated how you applied these concepts to analyze Alice in Wonderland. This has deepened my understanding of jazz harmony, and I can't wait to incorporate these ideas into my playing. Looking forward to more great content like this!

Although I know music theory quite well I'm new to jazz piano, and this thorough explanation will be the compass for my further journey. Really nicely done! Thank you

Modern Jazz is moving beyond this Great American Songbook tradition whose sources span early to mid last century. Hoping for similar excellent guidance on that too.

This is a wonderfully helpful tutorial! Thank You for sharing so much knowledge within 1 half-hour video. Will likely take me years to fully apply, but this opens lots of doorways towards more fully realizing my jazz piano goals

I hope you consider uploading lessons of Jazz rhythm and phrasing as two more important concepts (as far as I know) that makes the difference between Jazz and any other type of Music.. Thank you for these important basics.

Regarding the minor scale diatonic motions, please correct me if I misunderstand, but I think there is an error at about 11:33 in the graphic showing the A natural minor -- meaning the the notes in the scale are all from the C-major scale, yes? If that is correct, then the chords of the scale should be: Am7 Bm7b5 (and not Bm7) Cmaj7 Dmm7 Em7 (and not E7) Fmaj7 and G7. Or am I missing the point completely? Thank you!

7:50 … Is there a reason Phrygian isn’t listed there as a minor scale?
@jamesdean66608 күн бұрын
And Locrian! I don't think so, apart from it doesn't commonly happen. The more I look into it, the more it seems anything and everything really does go.
@kierenmoore32368 күн бұрын
@@jamesdean6660 I don’t think Locrian is considered minor, because the 1-3-5 makes a diminished triad: not a minor triad, like Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian, and Melodic and Harmonic Minor do … 🤔
@jamesdean66608 күн бұрын
@@kierenmoore3236 But surely it seems diminished is also minor... even more minor.
@kierenmoore32367 күн бұрын
@@jamesdean6660 The 4 triad types are Major, Minor, Augmented & Diminished … I totally get where you’re coming from, but not having a nice, stable ‘Perfect Fifth’ takes us outside of Major & Minor, into the more unstable Augmented and Diminished territories …
