My advice for con-crunch: 1. Clothes/Outfit > props. Do your clothes first, then your fancy weapons (if you have both still unfinished). You can still be the character you want to be by wearing your outfit, but just walking around with a sword at the convention won't do the same for you. 2. Don't forget your attachments! This goes out to all armor-loving-people: Do not forget to plan some time for making the belts and strings that will hold your armor in place. Your stuff may look finished and making it may have been the major part of your work, but it still needs to be put on you somehow. Do not underestimate that. 3. Try to rather finish whole costumes, instead of forcing yourself to do 3 at the same time, with the risk of having 3 unfinished costumes, instead of maybe one or two who are actually wearable to the convention. Don't hesitate to give up on parts of your cosplay plans for the con crunch.

One way I'm trying to avoid con crunch this year is to have monthly craft hangouts at my place where I invite a bunch of friends and we essentially pressure each other into working on stuff - it's hard not to get things done when everyone around you is painting/sewing/wig styling/etc! Plus it's fun (and educational) to see how everyone works on their costumes!

A way to help with Con crunch is: START EARLY I have a con in about two month and I already have my Mettaton Pecies cut and painted. Also instead of spending $100 dollars on a Soul Eater Evans costume, save that money for the con and use an alternative route called the Thrift Store. It helps alot. Trust me.

Word of advice- Planning for a con? Start as EARLY AS POSSIBLE. While not a convention thing, I was working on a big animation project. I started 6 months before the date I had to post it because I knew I'd procrastinate. And I still ended up spending the weekend before finishing it. The same goes with my cosplay, some friends and I are planning a week of cosplay towards the beginning of summer, and if you'll excuse me I need to go order my APH Ukraine wig because if I wait any longer, I'll be paying a small fortune for 2-day shipping on Amazon.
@MATAJADAN8 жыл бұрын
Hey, remember when I said that thing earlier? Well, it's 11 days until said con, and I just ordered my wig today. For a completely different character. My sewing machine is out of alignment, I have play auditions, and rehearsals to do. I don't even really know how to sew, and I've got a pile of fabric sitting in front of me that is sadly not in the form of a costume. Whoops.

One time I was making a very detailed Sneasel (Pokemon) costume, the convention was only 2 days away, I was too focused on another costume that I forgot about it. Since I had a ton of homework I had to do it at 11:00 PM. I told myself to take a break to eat and remember to sleep, but that didn't go as planned. I was so stressed about getting the costume done that I completely missed eating and sleeping and when I finished the costume it was 6 AM... It was the most frustrating cosplay I ever put together. The tip about knowing when to quit is so true. My first cosplay I ever made was Colette from Tales of Symphonia and I was trying to get her done the night before a con and by 1am I decided to leave her for another con. I was making mistakes and the blue trim I was attacking was getting sloppier and sloppier. So yeah which would you rather? The disappointment that you don't get to wear or the horror of walking around in a half a$$ed and rushed costume.

You are absolutely killing it with this look. That color coordination tho. A tip I have that I learned from watching a friend suffer just this last week is: Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you have some friends who don't have their own costumes to work on, ask if they can come over and help cut out a waistband or iron something for you while you do the bigger tasks, like sewing. My friend had to complete 6 skirts in one week and those skirts still wouldn't be done if they had been completely alone. Even if it's just picking you up some food or hanging out with you while you work, I think having someone around to keep you sane is a pretty good idea.

I wish I could like this a million times. My friends and I have been cosplaying on and off for about 10 years and the con crunch definitely creates unnecessary stress. I'm one of the few who actually likes to start my costumes at least a month or two in advance, but my friends all procrastinate until the week before. Sometimes I want to tell them that it's not fun being around them when they're running on 6 hours of sleep for the week and they're freaking out at every one and every thing, but I know that would lead to them spazzing out at me. As someone who deals with people who put themselves through con crunch all the time, PLEASE EAT AND GET SOME SLEEP. Your body, your friends, and everyone else at the convention will thank you.

I've got a con coming up this weekend and back in December I had an idea. A month or two ahead of time, put on some cosplay vlogs and get yourself hyped. Listen to your favorite soundtrack or re-watch the thing you're cosplaying from. Start your con-crunch a month early and see how much you can get done in that week. Don't run yourself into the ground of course, but try re-igniting that excitement well before the con rolls around so you can be motivated to finish it. If you're a worry-ridden workaholic like me, save a couple of small OPTIONAL projects for the week before. If your character has a prop they might carry but don't have to, save that for this time, that way you can keep yourself occupied but if you don't finish it, it's no big deal.

Con crunch is the real deal, we arrived at our hotel at 3 am for Denver Comic Con this year due to our procrastination the night before. It's the smallest little things that add up and consume the most time at the end of a costume. Definitely a learning experience.

Rule of thumb: if you can upon starting a costume, estimate twice the time you think it will take to make it to allow for mistakes. My brain is very detail orientated, so I have learned when making things to let go when I reach the "con ready" point. My initial costume runs always lead to tweeks, so I have learned to let go of things being absolutely perfect the first go. It has save much time and heartache.

I don't leave my costumes to the last minute that often but when I do I have some good music playing that I can sing and bounce along to, something that's fast paced and have a good beat and good lyrics. I also make sure to have no distractions around me mainly Facebook or Instagram

That moment when it's one week before the con, your wig STILL hasn't arrived yet!! I'm dead inside

Con crunch is exactly what I'm trying to avoid this year by starting my cosplay six whole months in advance. Suffice to say I've learned my lesson...

I had to make a 707 jacket within a night before my convention. Literally the last waking moment I had before the convention was spent hot gluing the orange cut outs, because my hand stitching ripped out. Fun time.

And this is why I get ready a month before I think I have to for conventions

I am in Con crunch at the moment with 1 week left and I decided to completely redo my Chibitalia cosplay from scratch ~_~

I have stuff to add: 1) If you have acne, freaking treat it before you go to bed. I do so much facepaint and acne is my worst enemy, stress over con crunch makes it worse so wash your face 2) (this helps me) Keep your room/workspace relatively clean. My room always becomes a huge disaster during con crunch week and it stresses me out, so set aside 30 minutes to an hour to straighten it up

I never actually had a problem with con crunch, whenever I was set on a costume I'd start it months early!

I never used to understand con crunch. I always wondered why cosplayers left it to the last minute. Then, I finally started. I had made the pattern for my Cinder Fall cosplay almost a year before rtxau. I made the costume in the two weeks before it. A whole cosplay from scratch, as someone who has never cosplayed before with minor help from a teacher. That shit was insane.

Also you should put your effort more on the parts that are important. Like, you can still use the costume if you didn't finish the prop, but you cant wear it if you don't get pants done even if you have super amazing prop
