As someone who works in parking garage maintenance I can tell you it was lack of maintenance. I worked in a 100 yr old parking garage and management never wants to do maintenance. The problem is back then they were so over built they seem invincible with huge oversized pillars. That false sense of security caused this. The problem is they settle and after a 100 yrs of settling the pillars develop stress cracks. moisture gets in those stress cracks and corrode the rebar. I had a huge crack that I reported for 2 years and no one listened, finally a 50 lb chunk of cement broke off and fell. fortunately no one was hurt, nor a car.

Question for you--do you think that it pancaked from luck? Or from the design of this specific structure? And was it specific to THIS structure? The year it was built and any regs they may have had, if any, 100 years ago? That it was a garage? Atleast it was a safe was to go down. I just wonder why.

The City of New York is complicit in this for allowing the building's owner to pay a fine instead of requiring the repairs to be made. The point of inspections is not to generate the City funds for revenue, the purpose is to keep people safe! Shut down non-compliant buildings and the problems will get fixed overnight, I guarantee it

@@ZunamiRevert You do realize that simply hating democrats doesn't make you republican right? Democrats are fools eating out of the hands of the wealthy. Years ago it was republicans that occupied this position, but you can look it up by registered voters. Democrats are now the party of the wealthy, despite wearing dresses that say "Tax The Rich". Republicans had their time of voting for their own enslavement, and now it's your turn I guess. Under Bush: bipartisan support for Patriot Act, wars in Afghanistan, Iraq openly. Secret wars in Libya, Ukraine, Syria, Sudan. There's few thing both sides agree on: war, expansion of the state, and removal of rights. Democrats will demand guns are banned, despite many leftists being pro gun. But a lot of gun control actually happens under republican control of offices. Like Trump banning bumpstocks with no authority, or Reagan's assault weapons ban. If/when that happens you'll realize why we needed them.

Not just parking garages, but apartments, condos, office towers, etc will start to do the same as the years pile on. Buildings surely don’t last forever, and despite maintenance, there’s always the possibility of unseen corrosion or damage to beams or other supportive components that aren’t seen until it’s too late. If you think about it, this is a century old building, that means people were parking cars in it since the 1920’s. That’s a lot of loading and unloading, and the corrosive air around it for a century. Crazy to think that people would’ve probably (definitely) continued to park in that building for another 100 years unless something obvious was going on with it. New York, and other large cities with countless skyscrapers may be uninhabitable in the coming decades, when more and more large structures start to partial, or fully collapse. Buildings expire! Pretty scary.

I've been working in parking garage construction for 20 years now and have see slabs de laminate and rebars that are half the size due to corrosion. With the weight of vehicles this is bound to happen. Here in Toronto buildings are inspected yearly and property owners are forced to do maintenance and if they do nothing they shut the garages down and shoring is put in place at the owners expense till the job is done.

If you think a century old building tells you everything you need to know about a 4 story building collapse I imagine you don’t know much about architecture. It was made to be a parking garage in the 50’s. We did have inspections waaay back then and cars aren’t that much heavier now (some are even lighter) I think multiple ignored violations tells you a lot more.

@@Namastephie I agree…’a century old building’ is testament to its engineering to have withstood the test of time….my uneducated guess is deferred maintenance on hairline cracks that allowed water/ minerals to seep in and this time of year there is a a daily freeze/thaw cycle which may certainly have been a contributing factor
@word42069
@word42069 Жыл бұрын
@@Namastephies an architect in NYC who used to work a block away from this structure… I would also say that it being a century old building used as a parking garage would tell you just about all you need to know. While many structures of that age in NYC are in fact *over*-engineered many like this would not have been given its former(?) and current use… it seems it was turned into a parking garage later. Even today parking garages are engineered for lesser loads than other structures given that cars, compared to people and other building loads, weigh on average less per square foot. I suspect that parking garage load requirements will increase as more people drive SUVs and EVs which weigh a lot more … if they haven’t already. Furthermore, during the conversion in the 1950s(?) who knows what information they had to go off of regarding the existing building and how much structure they had to remove in order to get the required vehicle ramps into the structure… and they weren’t using computers and advanced software to study the existing structure or how their changes would affect it. Given the way it collapsed and the nature of these collapses in reinforced concrete construction, this building was unstable for a long time and it was only a matter of time before the catastrophic failure. As a larger portion of society witnessed and learned from the FL condo collapse, cracks in concrete are which expose the rebar/reinforcement to water are deadly. I suspect a number of old parking a garages and other such structures around the city will be thoroughly inspects and/or closed shortly.

A century old parking garage, think about that for a moment. 1:40 That is 100 years. How much did the average vehicle weigh 100 years ago when this thing was built? That is not taking into consideration the structural and foundation decay. This was probably never built to hold multiple 2 ton+ SUVs, and mini vans on the top floor at one time.
