The original Xbox version had headset features. If you connected it, the director's instructions would only play into your ear and if you spoke, whistled or whispered into the microphone the enemies could hear you. Creating opportunities to lure them into the darkness with your voice. This also worked when playing the Xbox version using backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360.

So that’s why I don’t hear the director when playing it on Xbox 360. Though I assume they got rid of this feature on the Xbox One since playing the game with headphones plugged in and saying anything on the mic doesn’t do anything, and you can still hear the director on tv (unless this feature is still in if you have them plugged in on that port next to the headphone jack).

Piggsy scared the absolute SHIT out of me as a kid! He felt weirdly out of place. I know some consider Manhunt to be a horror game, but I never really saw it as that. Piggsy is full-blown Slasher film homage, clearly abused, mentally ill and enabled to be violent. Devolved into Piggsy then how you fight him is like how to deal with a Slasher villain you cannot fight 1 to 1. IF Rockstar would make a Manhunt it would have been a Battle Royal which is what Cash went through. The problem is balance since they would need to create multiple arenas and a working stealth system that isn't just made useless because "Gun go bang"

One reason he might be reacting more to watching his family members die on the tape is that in the first scenario, they're only killed if he gets seen, making it his own fault in a way. But it also means he has some kind of control over the situation, he can save the others if he does it right. It's some of the only power he has the entire game. But when they're killed on the tape, not only does it show that the director is a liar, it drives home just how powerless Cash is in the situation. He's been hunted all night long and the single good thing he managed to do, his one tiny win apart from just surviving, is shown to have been a trick.

@@CyberKnightProbably Indeed it's important to take feedback into account. And I'm not saying anyboy who dislikes these games is a hater, that would be stupid of me. But I do think that games such as these weren't as bad as many make them to be. Precisely because none of the four games I cited glorified what was happening. Most of the Twisted Metals characters get screwed over by Calypso, precisely because most are horrible people. Manhunt makes you feel dirty for playing and is a really gripping experience due to how immoral everything is, and Cash certainly isn't seen as a hero. Thrill Kill's cast was grotesque and pushed the boundaries of the acceptable but again none of them were seen as heroes, but I can get why it was never released. And finally Postal is about showing just how much can insanity change people and how bleak everything is. (Whilst the second's mantra is littteraly "It's only as violent as you want to be.") Hatred on the other hand....

I’ll spare the boring anti-SJW or whatever outrage like the other comment and just chalk it up to Manhunt not having so much as a fifth of the narrative, story telling, or gameplay of TLOU. Snuffing a guy out by restricting his air flow is definitely not as bad as swing a man’s head off.

In high-school I passed my gr 11 English class final exam about video violence, I used Manhunt as an example and played a bit of it in class. Got a very good mark on it! My opinion comes down to parents knowing what their children are playing and watching. They have advisory ratings for a reason.

I played it recently. I can see why it was considered so controversial and violent. Hell I still don’t think there is a game that lets you suffocate someone with a plastic bag or zooms up on so many kills. That being said, the game controls like total ass and I just couldn’t get far into it. Would love an upgrade with better controls/movement.

Any company that develops a sadistic and desensitizing game, as fun, knows damn well kids will play it, for not all kids have parents checking their video games or even good parents. Have you ever heard of juvenile detention? Yes, there are very bad households out there... Of course, RockStar doesn't care. They just wanted sensationalism and free publicity for the sake of their button line. Yet, here you are defending them for free and if what applies to you, applies to all society.

Aaah early 2000s was such a beautiful time. Minds of creators infused with 90s grungy aesthetic with things like Doom, Seven, NIN's music, The Matrix. It was the time when industry came to realization that there are infinite areas of creativity where they could go. Games like this prove that there were people eager to develop highly interesing concepts and stories, not afraid to go where the darkest constructs of human mind dwell in. I admire that golden era, and am afraid that it could never come back to us.

That's why I personally think the early 2000s was hands down the best time for gaming. There was still room to grow for new things and concepts, Games weren't so expensive to develop that it wasnt as risky to develop for new ideas, and they didn't rely on safe formulas for a successful game for max profit. You could have variety. but now everything seems kind of derivative. Like sure you'll get new things now and then and the technology is greater than ever, but often it feels like there's nothing that has that "Wow this is completely different from most things on the market right now."

I owned Manhunt and Vice City back in the day when they came out. I was in middle school and it was so taboo to have these. The news and other parents made such a fuss over these games, Every parent knew about them. I ended up getting a cool Aunt to buy me Vice City for Christmas and played "Hey Mister" at a mall GameStop for Manhunt, it took a while but finally a super cool lady made the purchase for me pretending to be family. Those were the days man, censorship had a grip on Everything! The feeling you get from having something like that your not suppose to as a kid is something I'll never forget. And when I want fighting baddies, I'd spend most of my time in that game just climbing buildings and exploring. By having the option to go full Hulk-smash and wreak maximum wanton damage, I was able to find that I didn't need it.

3 memories were triggered for me with this video. The first was you can use the PS2 headset and make noise by saying shit instead of using objects. You could say shit to the people you were gonna kill right before using the execution to make them aware you were there first. The second was when the cops are after you I believe in a level with a subway, you can stand at the end of the tunnel, make noise such as shooting a gun, all the cops will come and then leave except one. Just do that over and over to kill them all. Not fun, but did the deed. The third was when fighting Pigsy there's a small part of the floor that is lower than the rest and you can stand in it whenever he can't see you to be in the shadows. He'll stand right beside you and not see you. Don't know why it worked, but it did! Thanks for the video! Never seen a real dive on it!

This was one of those games that if you played it you never forgot it. The kind of violence in it was something that almost no one would consider putting into a game and the appearance and settings of the environments made it really creepy and bizarre. Plus some of the stuff that happened in the plot made it even darker. In some ways it seems like something that should have been from a nightmare. This was one of the very few games that actually shocked me a little bit. Edit: After I played through this game I do remember hearing something on the news about this game. I can't remember what they said but I clearly remember that they said something that wasn't true about it and I remember talking to a friend who played the game also and we both knew that they were lying. It made me mad at the time because I figured that it was the media trying to go on the warpath against video games again.

I find the Rockstar employee saying "There was no way to rationalize it." Hilarious. Here is your rationalization: It's a game, it's fun. Movies have realistic and gory violence all the time, what makes it different if it's a video game?

I thought so. Before Sir Anthony took up the role. The 1st movie Manhunter ( later remade as Red Dragon) had Hannibal Lecter played by Brian Cox. An actor who has no problem portraying evil it seems. A good and dark imagination of what you could do if you did not have a conscience or fear standing in the way of being a monster. Show that for the audience and there you are. Also in the movies that is the difference between a profiler and a predator.

Manhunt 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. Its gruesome, Gritty, has an amazing dilapidated city, old VHS style which I don't know anyone who doesn't love that, AMAZING OST and its just a plain old school badass all around game. The PS2 version is absolutely awesome! The PC version is another story. I love the "666" bat too.

Honestly i love the ending of Manhunt, because the reporter doesnt mention you as hero or saver but as the crazy murderer you are. And also the fact that we dont know what happened to Cash or if he is going to be as insane as Starkweather after that bloodfest is perfect, because after all even Cash himself knows what he just did could only be done by a psychopath and not a normal human being.

A Punisher and Manhunt crossover would be epic. It would start off with Frank Castle storming the lair of a drug lord and killing the drug lord and his crew and then getting arrested by the police. The Director would catch wind of this and decide to have Frank star in his films. Frank would have to fight his way through various gangs and locations and gain weapons before going after the Director and the dirty cops working with him. I think that would be cool.

Lots of the places you shot through you could stealth them, there's only a handful of "shooting galleries" you can only go through using firearms. And you got to get creative with "distraction items". Also "distraction items" (including heads) can be thrown at people which stuns them so you can perform execution. That starts to be a necessary technique once the swat shows up.

I like how this game (at least on the hardest difficulty) necessitates dying, almost like the Edge of Tomorrow. Only then you know how to take on criminals with similar health to you and survive under miraculous circumstances. I feel it really works in the horror genre because you're fucking terrified going to any new area knowing you're going to die.

I miss these games. The websites for both games were disturbing as hell too. I think you can still find 'em... For Manhunt 1, there was a fake snuff film forum, if I remember correctly, with people talking about the fictional director's other movies. EDIT: you covered it halfway through this video. Forgot it also had a fake store to it. For Manhunt 2, there was a series of "files" on the patients with extremely horrific and gruesome horror stories about what basically amounts to the real stories of Unit-731 (which really happened).
