My take on The Smileys (1) First Smiley: Paranoid schizophrenic, mentally unstable, extremely obsessed with finding his shoes, abused as child by his mother for losing his shoes by a dog, probably was locked in a white padded room, with a straight jacket on. Hallucinates a frightening entity called the 'Wichety Man' (2) Second Smiley: Appears to have been severely abused as a child by his father. Sadistic, childish, mentally disturbed, appears incapable of speaking, can be heard moaning and groaning, also throws tantrums, cries like a baby. Mask is written with 'Please Stop Me' inscribed in blood he's also drenched in blood himself, wears dark blue overalls. (3) Third Smiley: Appears to be suicidal, vicious, sadistic, agressive, extremely dangerous, slightly goofy, speaks in third person refers to himself as Fug. Has a mohawk, face paint and tattoos. (4) Fourth Smiley: Hard to explain, just jabbers screams, makes animal noises, not even capable of muttering a word, appears to be extremely delirious. (5) Fifth Smiley: Domestic Violence Smiley named Barry, abused and neglected his family, cheated on his wife constantly, beated her to death with a crowbar, emotionally damaged, wears women skirts, blouses and dresses, pretending to be her, can be heard crying, making comments regarding his wife's death. (6) Sixth Smiley: Oddball, thinks he's hosting a part or just plain delusional, has tattoos wears a Scottish skirt and a pig shirt, appears to be the smartest out of them all, also makes comments about food dishes, and old fellow neighbors.

Dog legs? What the hell is he talking about? Y'know, while most of the Smilies have one distinct obsession or are just plain crazy, Smiley #1 is somewhere in the middle with a number of random, but distinct obsessions, namely his shoes, the "Witchetty man", "dog legs", and head juice. Kinda makes you wonder what the hell happened to him exactly, or what happened to ALL of them. Most of them just seem to be disconnected from reality rather than truly malicious, but their skill in hunting and combat suggest otherwise.

While Manhunt never received official lore, you can make some reasonable guesses about the Smileys from their dialogue. For example, judging by his lines, Smiley 1 appears to have been abused by his mother when he was a child, apparently for losing his shoes. And it's also very possible that this happened whenever he did anything that displeased or annoyed her; the way he keeps saying "There's a good boy" reeks of a kid who desperately wants his mother's approval and affection, but is also terrified of disappointing her. He probably spent his whole childhood being beaten over minor things and lived in constant fear of triggering his mom's wrath, hence his determination in being a "good boy" and his obsession over finding his shoes, since losing them back when he was a kid meant a beating. His rantings about the "Witchetty Man" and just the way he talks in general also suggest he is schizophrenic and suffering from violent hallucinations. He also sounds rather childish, and is apparently not fully aware of what's going on around him, as if he finds the dead bodies of other Smileys, he reacts as if they're just sleeping. Overall, he seems to be a very abused person who never got over his childhood trauma. And Fug, judging from his in game model, seems to have had his brain completely fried by drugs. He likely went even crazier after years of using them.

He doesn't seem insane or psychotic so much as just mentally stunted. He talks even more childlike than #1, with the syntax of a four-year-old. I really have to wonder if he did something to deserve being there (maybe he hung out with the wrong crowd) or if he's just there because his family couldn't be bothered and abandoned him there one day. #4 (I believe? The one that isn't Fug) is also curious. He seems to have gone completely feral to the point that he has miniscule grasp of English (his only discernable phrase I can recall is "Cmere!") He reminds me a lot of Donnie from The Wild Thornberrys... I'm guessing he was a feral child they locked up years ago. Finally, #6. Definitely among the most mentally sound of their members, aside from the fact that, like Barry, they are delusional and seem to be reliving the moments that put them there. #6 seems to have been part of the upper crust of society and held fancy dinner balls, but either had a friend or partner show up that they often fought with.
