This is a fascinating tale for me because my brother was killed by a drunk driver in '83. The investigation was botched and the guy walked, my other brother vowed to kill the man but my father stopped him. After my dad died in '92, my psychotic brother tried to track him down several times, but couldn't find him. My mother was a skip tracer and bounty hunter and at my behest she tracked him to Rhode Island. (This all happened in New Mexico) He was dead. He died after being hit by a 23 year old drunk driver. My brother had just turned 24 when he died. It was such a weird, surreal ending to the saga, and I'm very curious how the drunk driver that killed him will fare later in life. Will history repeat itself? Who knows. It's certainly interesting though.

Why is no one considering the possibility that Doug's death was suicide? He was terminally ill, he had already declared that he was ready to "go home," and now here was an opportunity to die in a manner strikingly similar to the way he had killed someone years prior. Maybe he thought that this rampaging car had come for him, and simply stepped up to his destiny.

There is redemption in this story, though not from where you'd expect it. Douglas Parkhurst's grandson, and namesake, Doug III, actually sought out Darlene and apologized on behalf of his grandfather and his uncle. His life hasn't been easy, and it took a lot of courage for him to overcome the generational pain that held both families hostage for 50 years. I applaud him.

@@emilygoogle6520 lots of forensic evidence degrade over time and memories gradually alter making eye witnesses less reliable over time (risking them becoming more composite memories, years later thinking you saw the face of the person when that was just someone you saw earlier that day, for example). But yeah, with newer methods like DNA databases and increased video surveilance you'd think there'd be some legal room to reopen those kind of cold cases like rape and manslaughter if that kind of evidence is found even after the statute of limitations. (if those types of evidence are enough to exonerate the wrongly convicted years after the fact, it should be enough to lock up the guilty).

Seems that Sharrow was the only person who had her head on straight despite being actually insane. Hitting Parkhurst with was nothing laudable, despite him being a selfish old man who belonged in prison; it was a poor woman losing her mind.

Especially when the ads are thrown in at random, usually when the good doctor is about to drop a shocking tidbit. So frustrating.

If someone wrote this story as a work of fiction people would scoff and laugh and consider it preposterous. As truth it seems like something out of the Twilight Zone.

I live only about 20 miles from Sanford and have never heard of this case. I cal it Karma although I really don't believe in that. It take too long to work. He had a full life due to police failing to investigate and should have done some prison time. BTW, it's "Shap" rhymes with Slap - "lee", Shapleigh, Maine.

Oh I remember this one! It even made the news in Australia, I believe probably due to the bizarre nature of the incident (car being driven on ball field) and that in recent times we'd had a couple of similar "cars used as weapons" incidents (Bourke St, Melbourne massacre - perhaps another case for you to look at - just terrible 😢) and then one a few years later on Flinders Street. Plus other cities around the world were experiencing this new kind of terror - Nice, Berlin, London, Barcelona et al. The fact this turned out to be a mentally ill woman didn't necessarily alleviate concerns about cars being used as weapons. I had never heard the whole story though that you covered today. The entire situation does have an air of fate intervening where the justice system had failed. Tragic story all round for everyone involved really. Your analysis was as always thought-provoking and insightful.

I simply adore the jokes and sarcasm that are carefully inserted in the presentation of the case. You, kind sir, have a very good way of knowing exactly what to say and how much so you don't waste anyone's time but point to all the important details. Impeccable

Is it possible that Doug was ready to die since he had cancer and felt suicide by car would redeem him for the child’s death that he caused almost 50 years ago?
