Lyrics
There's a black dog on my shoulder again
Licking my neck and saying she's my friend
Solitude the one thing that I really miss
Guess my life is a compromise
There's a black dog on my shoulder again
I'm playing with it but it's gone to my head
Like Carlito's way there are no exit signs
Freeze me there until I am numb
My mouth is so dry
My eyes are shut tight
There's a black dog a coming tonight
Black dog's a coming tonight
My dilemma but not my choice
Winston Churchill can you hear my voice
Melodrama there in my kitchen sink
Double vision the way it is
Am I coming home to you again
Or am I stupid just by design
Does it matter if you really ever know
This black dog is out of control
My mouth is so dry
My eyes are shut tight
There's a black dog a coming tonight
Black dog's a coming tonight
Am I coming home to you again
Or am I stupid just by design
Does it matter if you really ever know
This black dog is out of control
My mouth is so dry
My eyes are shut tight
There's a black dog a coming tonight
Black dog's a coming tonight

I've always loved this song, but I love it even more after I had a major depressive episode in December of 2019. The line that suddenly made sense to me back then was "my mouth is so dry," and I saw it in a new light. Although my mouth wasn't really dry, it felt so and I later learned this was a trait some other people experienced when in an intense depression. The entire episode was horrible and the worst time of my life, as well as the cherry on top of a lifetime with mental neuroticism like intense anxiety and melancholia which I still struggle with (yes, I am indeed stupid just by design as the lyrics also say). I'm glad Nicky Wire and the Manics made such beautiful art out of such great pain. Those strings at the end are simply divine. Long live the Manics and others struggling with internal demons, from one of the few American fans, with love.

Most of the lyrics were penned by Richie Edwards aka Richie Manic the 4th member of MSP who disappeared in February ‘95 presumed dead. Every time I hear this song I think of Richie & the pain he was in. I’m sending you hugs & letting you know I’m your friend & I hope you find happiness ❤️

@@sayitlikeitis9868 I think it is well-known that this was the first album in which Nicky wrote all of the lyrics. Are you sure you aren't thinking about Small Black Flowers That Grow in the Sky from the Everything Must Go album, which Richey did indeed write? That song is also heartbreaking and it makes me think of Richey too. Regardless, thank you so much for your kind words! 💙

@Siddhartha Waimenda I may have mixed up the lyricist. I don’t pretend know it all & stand corrected when wrong it keeps me humble with a sort of ok sense of direction in this sometimes hard unforgiving world. You mentioned earlier that you are one of only a few MSP fans in North America, that is unbelievable, they deserve more credit for an amazing music career. I’m from Dublin 🇮🇪 just across the water from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 & they are loved on these shores

@@sayitlikeitis9868 No problem at all, we all get mixed up. :) It's well known the Manics never cracked America, sadly, but I did stumble upon them a few years ago and they've been my favourite band ever since then I'd say. Ireland is surely a lovely place and I know about their relative love for the Manics; there's a 1998 Manics documentary you can find on KZbin named "From There To Here", and it opens up with concert footage of them playing at Slane Castle in Dublin... a single day after I was born! But then again, given time zones, it's possible it was on the day I was born for all I know haha. By the way, so hard is the life of an American fan that I can't even click on the video we're commenting on because of copyright restrictions. I have to do it from the comment notifications tab, and I only made it in the first place because I was in Europe at the time. xD

This song validated the loneliness & depression I felt when I was 16. The mention of Churchill is unfortunate, but the violins are heavenly. I love the Manics -- they've made so many people feel better about life.

I haven't listened to this album in many years ... VERY GOOD !!! Such good things never get old. It's too early to consider it a classic, but it already sounds like one. Thank you, M.S.P.

See when a band , a talented one , really put their focus into their work we get diamonds like this. Id like to see todays top trending/top download selling " artists" come out with something " beautiful" and not just what the label wants for mainstream. Manics ? This wasnt even a hit if it even was released at all as a single , thats ghe difference in quality over the truly top bands vs the so called best selling , richest ever Taylor swift, justin beiber , dua lipa etc etc

Actually a term coined by Winston Churchill to describe his depression. Now a well-known way to describe the feeling of having this mental illness. MSP always educate.

They might, but they would be wrong. Read the lyrics to the Zep classic - they ain't about depression. Getting your leg over, maybe?
