Lyrics:
The future teaches you to be alone
The present to be afraid and cold
So if I can shoot rabbits then I can shoot fascists.
Bullets for your brain today
But we'll forget it all again
Monuments put from pen to paper
Turns me into a gutless wonder.
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
And if you tolerate this then your children will be next
Will be next, Will be next, Will be next.

The meaning of this song lies in a man deep in contemplation about the state of the world. He is about to undertake a huge decision that may change the course of mankind. He is reluctant to act but knows if he does not our children’s generation will suffer. He repeats the slogan a number if times tolerating this would mean his children would be forced to fight that battles of yesterday. He knows he is a pacifist but struggles with breaking his pacifist beliefs for the sake of change. In the end as an old man he thinks back about his past and how it has all been a fight for nothing…with nothing left to hold on to except his glory days.

Definitely and it just gets better. I also love their acoustic version's which i think are better. There some versions with the 3 Manic's on acoustics and some with just James Dean Bradfield on an acoustic, stripped right down to the most basics, an acoustic guitar and a vocal, which James really gets himself into the song and you see and hear how much it means to him, he's singing his soul out.

@@redplague Because the song is written about the Spanish Civil War it in no way prevents the lyrics hitting home with other things. Also intrinsically most problems throughout history are repeating cycles, and as such anything about one thing instantly applies to many others. Also get this, art is what you make of it always will be, and if you think anything ever made can only be what it's creator specifically made it to be. Then your attempt to sound clever and perceived sense of superiority; because you believe you have a correct answer against wrong ones. Only shows you to be stupid and very limited in your ability to critically think.

@@EddThe19th You have have completely failed to understand how my reply relates to the original comment. I'll repeat it for you Mr Critical Thinker. "This song makes more sense today than it ever has". I never said it couldn't be reinterpreted for a different time. I was doubting how it makes more sense now than what it was actually written about with a mind that maybe only those who didn't understand what the song was about would think that. I'm afraid your own attempt to sound clever has utterly backfired. How embarrassing for you.
@EddThe19th
@EddThe19th 3 жыл бұрын
@@redplague No it really hasn't that's some A grade twisting to try change a stance, worst of all it makes absolutely no sense. Not only is it a sentiment that isn't conveyed by the short sentence you wrote, but given the song at no point makes a direct reference and the fact that metaphor is such a heavy part of most modern imagery. It absolutely can make more sense now. Most importantly it's still an artistic production, as such is an entirely subjective experience. If the message, feeling or take away someone gets from it feels more real, or like it makes more sense than ever before, then that's an entirely correct fact for them.

@Daniel Spaniel not everything is about Brexit, there's much bigger things in the picture which have been routinely ignored under the Tories, such as poverty and the NHS. Brexit is nothing compared to life and death situations affecting millions everyday like the ones I've just mentioned.

@Daniel Spaniel, bullcrap. The biggest strain on the NHS is outsourcing, agencies charging hospitals £1500 for one nurse for a single night. Doesn't matter how much it's being funded when its money is being squandered like that.

@Daniel Spaniel Oh, really? And where do you get this information? Certainly not Oxford Economics. www.oxfordeconomics.com/recent-releases/8747673d-3b26-439b-9693-0e250df6dbba On average, immigrants each contribute £2,300 MORE to the UK economy every year than natives. So it's quite the opposite of what you seem to believe. And the percentage of immigrants working in the NHS is greater than the percentage of UK natives working in it. Again, contribuiting more. www.health.org.uk/news-and-comment/blogs/immigration-and-the-nhs-the-evidence But sure, carry on believing the blatant lies and misinformation pumped out from 4 Matthew Parker Street.

@Barry Harry DM? Absloute rag of a paper. Do you actually believe in any form of news you're fed? I'll assume by your profile photo and name that you have no kids and live alone with a couple of cats. If you had any kids to care about you'd be very aware of the future of the West. Remember, it was always their goal, from their inception, to conquer Europe. Don't be fooled by the moderate propaganda. They think 10, 25, 50, 100 years into the future.

Apparently this song is about the Spanish Civil War I read in a BBC interview with Nicky Wire. I had no idea - I'm 40 and my 96 grandmother who's still very much with us was evacuated from the Basque region of Spain in the 1930s. World War II then intervened and she remained in the UK - moving to Wales with my Welsh grandfather in the early 70s and settling in the Vale of Glamorgan.

To add to the history observations: the song's title comes from a slogan of real republican propaganda poster from the Spanish Civil War and the line "If I can shoot rabbits, I can shoot fascists" is a quote from the book "Miners Against Fascism" by Hywel Francis. I love songs inspired by real history and the message is still so relevant.

Chile, October 2019. We said enough is enough and we are fighting neoliberalism, healthcare, education, water, electricity, roads, and everything you can think of is privatised. Our salaries are very low, and our pension system is so bad people have to continue working after they retire. We are protesting in the streets but we are only getting tear gas bombs, bullets and violence from the police and the army, we need help, I always listened to this song and I was so sad because in my country we were all blind and deaf, indifferent to our own people's pain. Now I am more positive, at least we are all united fighting.

@GamorneiOne We have all been ruined in latin america by corruption, Peru is no different, I have met very nice peruvian people living in Chile working hard to make a living too so don't think it's karma, it's called CORRUPTION AND NEOLIBERALISM.

england ,the people that make this world tick need to stop being the ones that make it tick BUT how do we organise that world wide , each country will find its way to control us ,here in europe we are rich poor people compared to others , the rich are MEGA rich , but because we have games consoles , mobiles , krap tv ect people are brainwashed to beleive life is good ,but China wants what we have when many here see we need to have less how do we tell them they cant have what weve had , the world is a mess but i still have hope in human kind

Im an 86 kid and to be fair this genre of music is unknown to my locals of friends and followers. A big fan, this song and many other helped me through some very hard traumatic times in my life. Keep your head up. Life has a plan.. be patient..

That little drum roll at 3.14 inspired me to buy a drum kit and this was the first song I learned to play on it, back in 2000. Been playing ever since. Thanks, Manics!
