Lyrics
I don't know if I'm tired and I don't know if I'm ill
My cheeks are turning yellow
I think I'll take another pill
Praying for the wave to come now
It must be for the fifteenth time
I've been here for much too long
This is the past that's mine
I want to fly and run till it hurts
Sleep for a while and speak no words in Australia
I want to fly and run till it hurts
Sleep for a while and speak no words in Australia
In Australia
Praying for the wave to come now
It must be for the very last time
It's twelve o'clock till midnight
There must be someone to blame
I want to fly and run till it hurts
Sleep for a while and speak no words in Australia
I want to fly and run till it hurts
Sleep for a while and speak no words in Australia
In Australia
Australia, in Australia
I want to fly and run till it hurts
Sleep for a while and speak no words in Australia
In Australia
In Australia
In Australia

Inch for inch and dollar for dollar, Everything Must Go leaves OK Computer in its dust (the latter really only has 3 1/2 really good songs) and probably gives What's the Story Morning Glory a run for its money too but you wouldn't know it from popular opinion.

The ability of the Manics to take an incredible, upbeat melody and put the most desperately sad lyrics to it is absolutely unsurpassed. Genius is used too often, but it applies to the Manics.

I think OMD still gets the award for most incongruously upbeat song with Enola Gay. It feels very odd dancing to a song about one of the worst things that people ever did to each other.

I often think that this song could have inspired the Foo Fighters' 'Times Like These', with the verses starting with "I...". The Manics and the Foos played so many festivals together over the years, they would be familiar with each others' sets. As a songwriter myself, sometimes a line or melody comes into your head and you don't know where it came from, sometimes it's something you've heard before but you just go with it. It doesn't matter. 2 great bands, 2 great songs....RIP the great Taylor Hawkins.
@beehivecluster7496

Possible. But IMO Australia has the much stronger/more original melody, while Times Like These is pretty generic. Yet the Foos song has nearly 100x the views. 🙃

wasnt gonna do this ....but , i am drunk for the first time in years -so here we go. Pretty sure this song was inspired by a letter i wrote to one of the hall brothers on hearing of the passing of one of them -and pouring out my heart to them about hating England and wanting to return home to Australia .The lyrics have many references to the things i said -& very explicitly too . I could go line for line -suffice to say,i could explain the whole song ..i spent 2 1/2 yrs in uk - i was homesick.

mrsmiggins81 I actually think I inspired it ...it mentions everything I told them in a "fan boy" letter I wrote to them at the time as a over earnest aussie living in London ...everything in the song I alluded to including (and I kid you not ) a desire for nuclear annihilation and that I wanted to go back to Melbourne because I was popping so many pills to stay awake after 3 long years of 12 hour shifts and what the fuck was I doing here (London ) when all I wanted to do was go home to sleep for months to catch up , and speak to nobody ....I don't care what the official explanation may be ...I am certain its too much of a coincidence ...and I was spooked when I heard the song ...its either true -or a massive coincidence ?....hmmm , you decide .

Michael Seymour that's mad! Did you ever contact them about it?

Sky Widows no.... I doubt they would admit or encourage a response ....in fact ...in the live DVD at Cardiff stadium ...james says "skippy fuck off" ....which always makes me laugh ...funny , but I have not lost the passion for manics music ....even after all these years ...and I only saw them last year in "Australia" lol ! ....when they played that song live ...I felt weird seeing all those people rock out to it and thinking ..."if you only knew " ...yeh, cool ....thanks sky ...its good to share these storys -cheers ,mick ...i

All of their songs are really awesome!! But did they write a lot of songs from 1997 to 2002? I knew much of them a few days when i was hearing the song : (If you tolerate this then your children will be next) The fist time i listened it was in 2004 or 2005 and i thought it was a classic video from 80's Until i realized it was in 1998 so i appreciate the powerful voice, lyrics and bits.really loved that maniacs song Today i feel in a time machine when i hear the songs : (Motorcycle emptiness, Little baby nothing, Stay beautiful etc ) from 1992 when i was 6 years old , these songs are new for me but they're really classic videos and i felt nostalgic as if it always was known

For a long time this was my favourite Manics track. Probably still is. Have a vivid memory of them playing it live on TOTP, or maybe it was Jools Holland. Either way, what a gem of a song. The part from 2:36 is just so damn good.
