My friend Simon (Absolute LEGEND!) passed unexpectedly in 2021, at the age of 36. The last time I saw him, I had him all to myself for a 12 hour bar crawl in Amsterdam. Ripper. At around 03:00 in the morning we were sat in his freezing cold living room, peaking like bastards, just he and I. Owing to the fact we're both welsh he put a Manics record on, leaned back into his wingback armchair, looked to the heavens with eyes closed and said "this is my faaaaaaaavrrite fackin tune this, innit!". Before slowly looking over at me with a twinkle and a smirk. I smiled back. Ever since his death I've been hammering my memory trying to remember which song was playing when he said those words, but for the life of me I can't remember. Instead, whenever I hear any Manics tune playing, I think back to that moment and wonder if it's Simon's favourite tune playing. By this point they're all my favourite tune, if only because it reminds me of that one last hoorah with my mate Si! Funny the things you remember, not so funny the things you don't. Innit.

A lot of people ask (when I say, "I love the Manics") , "Don't you find them depressing?". No I don't. Is it just me?! I find them uplifting, and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck listening to that voice and the tunes!

The ultimate ‘moving on’ song. Keep walking and don’t look back. Pure catharsis, best symbolised by that girl smashing the giant clock with that bass towards the end. We let too much cling on to us and weigh us down,worrying about how much time we have and how much of it we think we’ve wasted. All we have is life time. Go.

As a Japanese person, it is very natural that the image of cherry blossoms used in this song and in the video is closely linked to the death of a member of this band. Since the time of the samurai, cherry blossoms falling all at once have symbolised the image of death without attachment to life. And whenever they sang about the Buddhist concept of the impermanence of all things, it left a lasting impression of mourning and regret for the young man who had died before them, and the determination of those left behind who must nevertheless move on.
@troppmann2 жыл бұрын
I thought it was also an ironic reference to Chairman Mao's let a hundred flowers bloom speech, and that the loss would have to lead to new ideas. I accept I could be wrong: is that how cherry blossoms spread their seeds?

Lovely but this song was released 2 years after Richey went missing. Nobody thought he was dead at that time. I doubt they knew of the traditional significance of the cherry blossom. More likely that since this song is clearly about him, everyone knew of his love of Japan, the cherry blossoms were iconic of that

Imagine being a fan in 1996. You know the Manics as just a dark, angry, artsy punk type band and then they put this album out which is so different to anything they've done before, a lot less rocky and more pop/Motown influenced but maybe their most poignant work yet, full of huge anthems that are so defiant of their past tragedy.
