The ability of the Manics to take an incredible, upbeat melody and put the most desperately sad lyrics to it is absolutely unsurpassed. Genius is used too often, but it applies to the Manics.

I think OMD still gets the award for most incongruously upbeat song with Enola Gay. It feels very odd dancing to a song about one of the worst things that people ever did to each other.

I often think that this song could have inspired the Foo Fighters' 'Times Like These', with the verses starting with "I...". The Manics and the Foos played so many festivals together over the years, they would be familiar with each others' sets. As a songwriter myself, sometimes a line or melody comes into your head and you don't know where it came from, sometimes it's something you've heard before but you just go with it. It doesn't matter. 2 great bands, 2 great songs....RIP the great Taylor Hawkins.
@beehivecluster74962 жыл бұрын
Possible. But IMO Australia has the much stronger/more original melody, while Times Like These is pretty generic. Yet the Foos song has nearly 100x the views. 🙃

mrsmiggins81 I actually think I inspired it ...it mentions everything I told them in a "fan boy" letter I wrote to them at the time as a over earnest aussie living in London ...everything in the song I alluded to including (and I kid you not ) a desire for nuclear annihilation and that I wanted to go back to Melbourne because I was popping so many pills to stay awake after 3 long years of 12 hour shifts and what the fuck was I doing here (London ) when all I wanted to do was go home to sleep for months to catch up , and speak to nobody ....I don't care what the official explanation may be ...I am certain its too much of a coincidence ...and I was spooked when I heard the song ...its either true -or a massive coincidence ?....hmmm , you decide .
