The variation in fundamental values of which Hanson laments the loss can create the conditions for very nasty wars. The Axis powers, who did have fundamentally different values from the socialist-communist allied powers, were subjected to total defeat, to unconditional surrender. Most German cities and all but one Japanese city were leveled in the process. And the actions of the Axis powers in their attempt at empire building were still more brutal. The European wars of religion also ran to extremes at times. The Roman-Jewish wars of the early centuries AD were also examples of major clashes of values. They were notoriously vicious. Another way to create an opening for variation is for a nation to seriously reduce international contacts available to its people, as North Korea has done. China and Russia can do this at a much larger scale. The problem is that national leaders, even young ones with stable regimes, tend not to think in terms of generational time scales. They may, however, close themselves off for other reasons. This would not effect the elite in the same way, but they would at least be less likely to fully commit to globalist conformity. This would likely cost the nation international competitiveness. N. Korea's TFR is about 1.8, which might be ideal for a regime that cannot access outside food sources in a bad crop year. S. Korea's TFR is 0.7, which is ideal for accelerated national suicide. Groups like the Amish and the Haredim function in artificial environments, geopolitically speaking. It's not clear how they would operate if they were the majority population of a country and in control of its government. The Amish in particular seem incapable of modern warfare. This means they can only be subjects, not rulers. Is this a survivable approach in the long run?
