The railway construction in Manipur’s Noney district, halted for nearly two years after a devastating landslide at the Makhuam (Marangching) Railway sub-station, has resumed. The landslide, which occurred on the night of June 30, 2022, claimed 60 lives and left many others injured.
On Tuesday, Hill Areas Committee (HAC) Chairman Dinganglung Gangmei and officials from Northeast Frontier Railways visited the landslide site to offer their condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
According to HAC Chairman Gangmei, the project was previously delayed due to compensation disputes. However, construction has now resumed thanks to the interventions of Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Gangmei acknowledged their leadership, which he said will significantly benefit the local community as the NF Railway project moves forward.
Expressing gratitude, Gangmei commended the village authorities for their trust in the leadership of both the Chief Minister and the Union Railway Minister. He also thanked the railway officials for their efforts in resolving the long-standing issues that had stalled the project.
“At this juncture, cooperation between CSOs, villagers, and the NF Railway Ministry is crucial to ensure swift access to essential commodities amid the ongoing inter-community crisis,” Gangmei stated.
This development, he added, marks a significant step towards a brighter future for the region.
It is worth noting that, following the landslide, a 9-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on July 20, 2022, between the Government of Manipur, NF Railways, and the affected villages, addressing compensation and rehabilitation. However, work on the railway had been suspended multiple times due to non-fulfilment of the MoU agreements.
