Good JOB Jim, I work on a ton of them. And I have never gotten the plastic screw out when they brake. I drill and install a stainless screw, But saying that I have never seen a Manitowoc that had the board on top like the one you are working on, the boards are on the right side. Just above the pump. So good idea on the silicone, Again good job.

Just wondering why your gauges are on there already. And guessing theres a leak somewhere already. Let the machine do the talking run it for couple batches of ice, see what its doing and not doing. First that thing looks like it needs a cleaning but thats after we find out what else is the problem. Im a FSR for Manitowoc and do warranty work. And lots of machines ive worked on have i yet had to put my gauges on. Even on a remote unit if its a bad headmaster, the liquid line tends to be hotter than normal. Leak? liquid line is colder. These machines are i believe have a good reliability. And stupid stuff causes people to make a service call. Even before turning it on, just take a quick gander on the obvious stuff just to see what could have caused it to not work
@OcRefrig10 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do Agree. Leaks are pretty rare on ice Machines. Been doing this 34 years. Check Condenser Cleanliness,( Dirty Condensers-Most common Problem) Run a Cycle First, Put a Temperature Clamp on the Suction Line Near the Compressor, or look how she fills the plate, low charge gonna show on the Evap. plate and suction coming back to compressor is Going to be Warm Near the End of Cycle. On All equiptment---Condenser Cleanliness is the First Step in a Service Call !!! Period !!! 1) Check Condenser---make sure it's Clean! 2) Run a Cycle---Do not Attach Guages unless you are Sure it's Refrigeration Related.

Weigh the charge in. It will be correct. check "charge" by taking temp readings per the service manual's recommendations. Leave the long hoses in the truck. If you absolutely feel the need to put gauges on an ice machine, buy the stubby gauges and use them. Also, the unit will go into harvest after water runs over the ice thickness probe for 7 seconds continuous.

I worked on a manitowoc 300lb ice machine similar to the one in this video today. Water kept overfilling in the pan under the evaporator. The feed valve didnt seem to stop feeding. The harvest cycle (when the drain valve energized) is when the pan stopped over filling. The customer complaint was no ice production. I found the ice thickness sensor was almost touching the evaporator so I opened it up a bit. I also suspected a bad module because the valve would not stop feeding water. What do you think? Great video by the way!

1) Calcium builds up on the metal surface and the ice has a hard time falling off. Use Manitowoc ice machine cleaner to dissolve the calcium and it doesn't hurt the nickle plating. 2) Refrigerant level is low 3) the unit is in a cold place

Alpesh Patel Are you a service repair technician ? it could be your thickness probe, have your refrigeration service man check it properly, you could do some very expensive damage if you try to repair it yourself. If you damage the circuit board it could cost 500-600 dollars
@benstaton7449 жыл бұрын
for the ice machines, do you check psig by superheat or subcool? or just by total charge weight?
@JamesPettinato9 жыл бұрын
I'll call the tech support and get the freeze cycle suction pressure and discharge pressure at the begining of a cycle then at the end of a freeze cycle, also the hi and low pressures for the defrost cycle. They want you to remove the refrigerant and weigh it in, too much trouble. Watch the evaporator the ice should form evenly across it. The suction line back to the compressor should get cold, even a little frost by the end of the cycle, but no frost onto the compressor.

You sealed the water distribution tube to its bracket! How is the next guy supposed to do a PM on this unit, and be able to pull it apart?? You should have shown the customer, got them to pay the labor to have you pull the evap plate, drill the broken screw, and put it back together. Also, these are critically charged units, the refrigerant charge has to be dialed in exact, not fudged or guessed...I won't put gauges on these unless I KNOW it has a leak.

Hello Jim, I was checking out your channel, you have some excellent videos on here. I'm not an HVAC tech by any means but I like looking through service videos just to learn about how things work, I am a firefighter by trade. This video interested me because you talked about the filters for calcium. I have been debating on whether or not to invest in a system like that for my home because I have been having problems with Kidney stones from Calcium from the hard water, So the Dr. Tells me. Go Figure, Give up Sodas after many years and end up with stones from the hard water. Anyway, I was wondering what your professional opinion would be on investing in one of these systems. Are they worth getting into or would it be better to buy filtered water from a local vendor? Thanks for reading and you have a great channel.
@JamesPettinato10 жыл бұрын
Our bodies need some calcium, but the best way to eliminate calcium is to get a reverse osmosis water filter. It only lets H2O molecules through the membrane, but you have to add a little calcium (baking soda) and sea salt for minerals, because the H2O bonds to calcium and magnesum and when it gets stripped away the H20 will take your calcium from your bones or teeth so add a little. The grocery distilled water will do the same thing. I went to a high end salt water aquarium shop and bought a reverse osmosis unit for around $100. It will filter out all chemicals like chlorine and floride. My grandfather was FDNY from the 30s to the 50s, stay safe. At the aquarium also get a PH meter, check your urine PH, it represents your blood's PH. you want to stay up around 7,34 PH. cancer lives at 5PH and eats sugar. Soda's PH is 2.5PH (very acid) it will drop your blood PH from the 7's down to the 5's and it's full of sugar, it's perfect cancer food. Look up (Dr Young Blood PH) on youtube.
@DevilDogsSon10 жыл бұрын
***** Jim, Thank you for the advice, I will definitely look into the reverse osmosis unit, and research the PH levels more, I appreciate the insight on this. A Grandfather in the FDNY? Now those are the Real Firefighters, You must be very proud of that one! That's an awesome part of one's family history. You have a excellent channel here, and I will keep up with your new posts in the future. By the Way, Nice Knuckle head flashlight, I have one on my bunker gear too. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Manitowoc is the best engineered I/M on market. The infield classes are a must! For those in the field we KNOW some health departments would poo poo seeing silicone in proximity. Stub gauges only! Drill thru top and install small stainless screw/washer on distributor tube as a fix. 3 cycles malfunction before is shuts down and stores what I thought I saw 2 flash code( probe is dirty, number one service call!) I will totally disagree critical charged unit need exact charge!!! it does matter. Midwest has terrible lime/calcium in water as per water pro's.
@TheVartaz9 жыл бұрын
+KM Service NO manitowoc is NOT the best ice machine, it is a low end like scotsman ice makers. The very best ice maker in the world is HOSHIZAKI ! Great video Jim, but i agree i never put the gauges on ice makers the problem is almost never in refrigeration circuit. Almost always water or electical problem..
@juanugomusic95887 жыл бұрын
Jim if u charge per hour u most be a rich guy. Always look around and make sure is making ice and sensor but never assume that the problem is a gas issue. Gauges always should be the last procedure to perform on an ice machine. I will give u a thumbs down on ice machines. I will no let u touch my ice machines.
@mudsadesbenz10 жыл бұрын
I am greatful that y'all post videos to try and help people out but you have gauges with six foot hoses if the machine wasn't low on refrigerant it is now this machine holds ounces not pounds your hoses hold anywhere from two to six ounces a piece so now that being said Manitowoc ice recommends you don't put gauges on their machines unless absolutely necessary and then you use just a gauge not hoses. Now I don't want you to think that I am criticizing you because I am not just want to point out an error that you are making you are showing the younger tech's that watch your videos to learn a bad habit next time when the machine is not making ice at the top of evaporator plate and they can't find a leak they assume they have an issue with expansion valve and then your customer will get the short end of the stick because now you have sold him a valve labor and everything else that goes along with changing a valve because they are not going to know to reclaim the refrigerant and weigh it before they are there to replace it and then after the valve got replaced the tech thinks this is what was actually wrong and actually it was just because someone has put gauges on this piece of equipment. Good luck and God bless to y'all that post videos to help the younger tech's I am glad to see people trying to help and teach this trade which is hard to find someone that really wants to learn how to fix refrigeration equipment y'all keep up with the good work and thanks

I don't think he ever went to their school because the last thing you do is hook your gauges to the ice machine. next the machine, prob etc. need to be cleaned. then there is an other way to hold it down. Then manitowoc makes a top plate replacement for there machines. when he takes his gauges off he just put the charge low. If you think this is a great video you all need to go to Manitowoc School. why do I know this I have 20 plus years in Refrigeration and factory certified for all Ice Machines. Plus they have there own cleaner. you use other type cleaner on it and messes the plating up there goes the warranty. They teach you to use your temp meter to check your charge. also you can get there books which you can trouble shoot there systems. Temp to pressure chart .
