I'd think the lap number becomes a sprite because: - A lap number is just a sprite. Digits only go 0-9, so there are no more after 9. - It tries to access the 10th sprite after the sprite for 0. There's no bound check for this array access and it continues into other sprite storage and grabs the sprites located sequentially in memory. Nice.

I think the reason that the lap counter becomes the item sprites is because I think the number sprites for the lap counter are stored on the same sprite sheet as the HUD item sprites, so when you move on to lap 10 it goes to the next sprite on the sprite sheet, which would be the green shell, etc.

You'd think that kind of unbound image incrementing on the lap counter would be something that would happen on the NES, not a modern-ish 3d console. I guess old habits die hard. Also, it's interesting that the bottom number was set to 58, but you didn't notice because it just happened to land on a 7 in a different font.

It's really interesting how the game uses these icons instead of the lap number. I guess they either did that so that the game had a functional way of displaying those laps in some form, or they simply gave every UI icon an ID which is kept track of in this case by incrementing a number on every lap completion, causing it to just spill over onto displaying power-up icons which just happened to occupy the next ID above the icon for lap 9.

What's your configuration like? Mine keeps crashing after 10 laps (using Dolphin). Edit: to keep from getting infinite errors, disable Panic Handlers in Configuration. Enhancements should be fine.
