Now I remember why I never liked this game.... On another note: I agree, you don't need jumpscares and monsters alone to make a good horror, those are just icing on the cake. All horror really needs is something for you to care about and the idea that that thing can be taken away from you as a result of error. In most horror games it's yourself that is the thing you care about, so jumpscares are a lot easier to portray danger. In this game however, the thing you care about is your frog and other frogs, so the thought of these frogs die as a result of your incompetence is what scares and disturbs you. Jumpscares wouldn't make too much sense for this sort of game.

So you dont like the game? Even though it goes along with your little preach here? Confusion 100 🤔
@SadFace2014 жыл бұрын
The things attached to the landscape are actually the beginning, not the end, of their life cycle. In a typical jellyfish life cycle, the jellyfish produces larva/eggs/whatever you want to call it which anchor to a surface, producing a polyp. The polyp is what you see in this game and it grows until mature jellyfish can bud off from the polyp structure. There's also a lot of details that I like about this game. The first is that you immediately realize it's an oxygen economy---it is both your life force and your weapon. The second is that there's something symbolic how the oxygen that keeps you sustained throughout your dive is coming from the very enemy you've sought to destroy. This transitions perfectly into a tense ending where you're not sure if your frog is going to make it back to the surface. However, I don't like how they removed the mechanic where your frog turns redder the less oxygen---not only was this needed to see how desperate you needed oxygen during fights, but it also added a lot of tension at the end where you weren't sure if your frog was going to make it since he became VERY red before getting back to the surface. The third is that I like how the game is somewhat based on science---it showcases a parasite that requires the lungs of another to process oxygen (otherwise it's toxic to them), the lifecycle is taken from jellyfish, and the world seemed to have suffered some disastrous climate change that flooded the world (which is probably what put frogs into more contact with these creatures). I think the game also adds a lot of tension by the addition of fellow frogs you can save, many of which are almost impossible to save without practice. It's a feels-good achievement to save the first few you find, then it becomes horrific as you make the conscious decision to sacrifice your brethren and to prioritize yourself as the game becomes more difficult. Anyway, it's one of those short games that's more art than game (and it does it well). They definitely upgraded the visuals and sped up the gameplay in this remaster.

That's the one "complaint" I have about this "remaster". The original had less-detailed graphics, so it wasn't _immediately_ obvious that the "heads" of the "cows" were frog bodies - realizing this _later_ added to the slow creeping horror of the ecosystem. With the cleaner graphics, it's much easier to see this from the very first "cow", and some of the horror is lost.

My nostalgia gears are running high again, man this game was so dark when I first saw it, and not gonna lie when I saw the thumbnail of you playing it I immediately felt uneasy since I remembered how dark it was. Normally I wouldn’t be disturbed by these type of things but the artstyle and gloomy, lonely, dark & cold atmosphere fillled with nothing but silence really sells the unsettling feeling you eventually build up towards the end.

@@theg-man4840 Okay oaky so I dunno if you’ve heard any of these three but. I suggest Somthing’s in the Sea, Happy Game (still in demo mode but it’s really nice, though epilepsy warning), & Omori (it’s popular for a reason...Also don’t be misleaded by it’s happy dreamworld).
@theg-man48403 жыл бұрын
@@rpcsa8 I watched actually this same guy play Happy Game, but haven't watched anyone play Omori or SITS, so I guess iI'll play those myself

@@theg-man4840 sure sure, those two games are prtty cool. ‘Something in the Sea’ is sorta the same format as ‘They Breathe’, however if you’re into lore & pokemon styled gameplay I suggest Omori.

this is the most unique horror game i’ve ever seen. the monster is genuinely terrifying in concept and design, the atmosphere is oppressive and tense, and the animations and use of the sprites (the frogs turning into heads literally made my jaw drop), everything is here to make an incredible experience. It’s eldrirch, uncanny, and brilliantly shown off,
@joshriley2936 Жыл бұрын
Such an interesting concept. I assume the idea for the use of the frogs to process oxygen came from the theory that mitochondria actually first formed in ancient single-cell lifeforms when anaerobic eukaryotic cells absorbed and assimilated aerobic bacteria that would process the otherwise toxic oxygen for them, hence why the jellies get killed by oxygen when they don't have a frog attached. And the atmosphere is really well done!

honestly as someone who loves frogs and fears drowning, this game was legitimately disturbing. like seeing the poor fellas drown and even the jellies struggle and their noises get louder as you deprive them of oxygen was horrific.

That was so weird! It had a really nice sense of scary sea that gets darker as you go deeper. I thought monsters were creepy, and the concept was upsetting like you said. Kinda reminded me of the Ecco the dolphin. Love those horror games where you play as an (non human) animal and beat some monster boss at the end. Feels cute
