Just so you know, the Mann spin on filters made in the US (including this ML1008) are identical to the equivalent Purolator filter, in this case the Purolator Red with nitrile adbv. Not sure what the ML1008 cost but no reason to pay more for it than the Purolator. Mann & Hummel has been the sole owner of Purolator since 2013, and Purolator makes their US made filters. Cut open the equivalent Purolator Red L14610 and confirm it for yourself. I would guess the Purolator costs less.
@CarsNToys7 жыл бұрын
You're correct. Mann Hummel manufactures Purolator and Wix.
@faxmen097 жыл бұрын
After I posted my comment I noticed you had already cut open a Purolator Red L14610 on a few months ago. You can see that the internals of this Mann are identical to the Purolator. M&H does own both Purolator and now Wix, but currently only Purolator makes the Mann US made spin on filters.

And not all engines need or require drianback valves, only ones that have the filter horizontal, or an angle other than vertical (with the threaded end up).

Well, mann+hummel owns: wix filters, filtron and proulator. Some filters are often completely the same. There are produced some orginal bmw, 5 minutes later there comes mann filter out of the machine and the next day volvo, the afternoon bosch (completely the same filter) You don't need a wired back, high quality filter media stay's in place, even if you don't change it after life time, the perforated metal in the back prevents the filter media from imploding.

Here is my experience with a Mann 920/17 oil filter. My OCI is 6-7k miles using Synthetic and a Wix or Napa Gold oil filter. I have tried others and they have been fine when opened, but this is about the Mann filter. Normally when I remove the filter I get a mess of oil drip down the side of the block down to the catch pan. This time removing this Mann filter produced barely any oil drip at all. So I complete the oil change and off I went. This morning I cut this filter open as I do all my filters after use to give a look see. I was surprised that this filter did not have an anti drain back valve, so actually the oil drains back into the oil pan, leaving the filter dry thus the reason for no oily mess on the block. It did have the leaf spring. Other videos on KZbin show a Mann filter with an anti drain back valve and a sturdy coil spring. The coil spring or leaf spring do its job in the canister, but having no anti drain back valve causes oil to drain back into the oil pan instead of remaining in the filter. This filter was purchased on EBAY for $7.73 and the filter did say 'Made in Germany'on the canister. Could be a miss on the assembly line ? or is it a cheap Chinese knock off ? I had two filters, so I spun the other one on and I will update this next oil change in approx. four months. I have been warned about cheap knock offs on EBAY so we'll see. Beyond not having that valve, the case itself is very sturdy ,the filter element held up fairly well without the pleats distorting badly in any way. Anyone else come across this finding ? So to followup; I could not get this off my mind so I removed Mann filter at 820 miles, cut it open. Looking at the filter base plate when removed, I did not see an anti drain back valve through the holes on the base plate, not black rubber, not orange/red silicone and not white, I will keep this in mind next time no matter what filter I use. There was NO anti drain back valve in the second Mann filter I used from the same buyer on Ebay for $7.73. This time I used an STP S16XL. Had one once before and when opened after 6k miles, the pleats remained rigid and there wasn't any debris on the inside of the case and bottom of base plate as there was with the Mann. This is Memorial day weekend so I will wait for Tuesday to contact Mann filters to see what if anything they say regarding my experience with their filters. These could have very well been a Chinese knockoff but bothers me that they would cheap out on a piece of rubber or silicone. Beware ! So I was in touch with Kyle Smith of Republic Manufacturing in Dallas Texas via email, this is the outfit that builds the Mann oil filters. He claimed that they do not incorporate an anti drain back valve into their oil filters. So I do not put blame on the seller as he may not have known. At this point I am done using Mann oil filters.
@Scramasax4 жыл бұрын
I think you have misunderstood the basics here some what. Filter manufacturers (including Mann) make hundreds of different types of filters. Most have antidrain valves, but you can also buy a model that doesn't have one. Some have several different types of valves built in one filter, but you can also buy a model that does not have any valves at all, not even a bypass. It all comes down to what your engine requires and what kind of filter you buy. It certainly sounds like you have installed a wrong kind of filter in your engine. It's not about the manufacturer, it's about the filter type. Check the online Mann Filter catalogue for the correct filter for your engine. You can also double check from there, what specific built in valves does that specific filter have included.
@rayg50064 жыл бұрын
roadrunner, I know it's been 7 months but I just had to comment on what you wrote.... If you would have checked their online catalog you would have seen that your Mann W 920/17 does not have an Anti-drain back valve. catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER%20Katalog%20Europa/Oil%20Filter/W%20920~17%3Bjsessionid=0313E481234EA72D290EFB39FE4D7B59 For example, the filter I use for my Ford does have an Anti-drain back valve and it even has a Bypass Valve, as noted on their online catalog: catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER%20Katalog%20Europa/Hydraulics,%20Hydraulic%20Transmission%20Filter,%20Oil%20Filter/W%20940~24 Coincidentally, my filter is basically the same as yours, just a little longer and with the Anti-drain back valve. A little research can go a long way
@matthewjenkins11614 жыл бұрын
@@rayg5006 Is that the correct filter for your car though and if so, did your car manufacturer specify bypass and anti-drain back back valves? As you know, their website gives the specs on all their filters, including the pressure rating where fitted, of the bypass valves. I know this because I've been searching extensively for the best oversize filter for my car, that matches the critical aspects like thread, inner/outer seal diameter, presence of drain back and rating of bypass. So next time I will use a Mann W 940/47 instead of the recommended W 719/36. From what I see, the W920/17 is only specified for some pretty old air cooled VolksWagens, VW engined 914 and the Vauxhall Viceroy. If you are driving something else, it is likely the seller mis-sold you that filter.

@matthewjenkins11614 жыл бұрын
@@Johnny747CB There is nothing low quality about Mann oil filters, but it seems likely the wrong filter was purchased for his engine. Difficult to say that with certainty, without knowing the engine concerned. The W920/17 is specified for very old engines from Vauxhall and VW and the equivalent Amsoil filter (if there is one?) would also lack anti-drainback and bypass valves.
