Hi, New Zealand uniforms in those days were like the throw outs of an Army Surplus Store! I came back to Auckland in 1971 from Singapore. I was dressed in my Dacron uniforms and luckily received authorisation to wear them. The BD issued by the QM in Auckland was the 1937 Patent and had the map pocket in front as well as the little compass pocket on the right, and the stink that came off that uniform was abysmal. I threw it into a plastic bag and gave it back to the QM six years later without once having to use it! I was lucky in that with all my British Army kit I kept through out my service and found the only better kit issued in N Z was the shirts, the light raincoat and the boots and socks. The last Annual Camp I attended in 1971, we were told not bring any non issue gear to Camp that year. Obviously, I brought all my Artic issue gear with me as who would ever go to Waiouru in February without extra warm gear! That was the year that our Defence Department proved to the Government that the issued clothing was crap and we needed something new for our Antarctic conditions. What a way to make the point! Yep, thats one of the reasons that a Kiwi Squady is the best scrounger in the world, especially when overseas and given the challenge! Cheers mate. Harera

I was in the Australian army reserve from 1986-92 and the Kiwis had good kit. One thing I remember is they had outstanding boots due no doubt to their inclement weather meaning they had to have good footwear.

that"s pretty much what I wore at the time.....the bumpack I never had but some of the boys had one... the green pants later got replaced by DPM pants which you could wear with the green shirt.....this combo looked really smart....and you couldn"t iron the DPM so we loved them.... when the camo shirt came it didn"t look look as cool i reckon....

When I was in NZ army. we changed to DPM in 1981 still keep the green shirt.

I joined RNZIR in 1980. You are so right about the mixture of uniform items we had access to! The web pouches were US M16 type. Those large pouches didn't come out until mid 80's. The M16 ones barely held 2 SLR magazines. We'd often buy extra web pouches from Army Surplus and customise our belt order. Also - we got reemed if the Bum-bag straps dangled down. They had to be tied up together or you'd get a boot in the arse from your Pl Sgt.

Some other items worn with the webbing in the early '80's and up until the mid '90's where: Pattern 37 compass pouch, binocular case and bino's!, map case, pistol lanyard used as a compass lanyard for the prismatic compass (usually of late '30's to early '40's issue) and wire-cutters and carrying case. There was usually a US pattern 1st field dressing pouch carried on the left shoulder of the suspenders for right handed shooters. And battledress trousers still issued until about the mid '80's.

One of my brothers in law was a Territorial Force soldier in the mid-80s. The rope is legit, at least he had one on his kit in the same position as you have on your web kit. His web kit was mostly M1956 (suspenders and belt with Davis type buckle), with an odd small private purchase pouch that he kept a poncho in, and instead of the large Australian mag pouches he had two US M1956 mag pouches (the larger, earlier 'universal' type), two Australian type canteen covers (pouches) and canteens, and he had two P44 magazine pouches on the back of the belt instead of a butt pack as they were lower profile, he said that he wasn't a fan of the butt pack as it was too bulky and would get snagged on things at times in the bush. Uniform-wise I recall that he had green shirts like the one you have, worn with either temperate or tropical (jungle) weight British DPM trousers, don't think I ever saw him with the green trousers. He did also have a tropical weight DPM shirt. He left before the first issue of the first pattern NZDPM uniforms.
