A fully qualified Leading Rate's trade badge would have two stars, one above and one below the trade insignia. One star normally indicates an Able Rate. The trade badge on the mannequin would indicate an Acting Leading Rating who had not completed his Leading Rate's qualifying course.

Not at this time period. The firm link between substantive and non-substantive rates, plus standardisation of the use of stars and crowns on badges across the various branches would not occur until post-war. At this time it was still possible to find Chief Petty Officers who had never advanced beyond seaman gunners and vice versa, by way of example.

Would have been an idea for the attachment on the lanchester pouches to have been mounted higher up on the rear of pouch. this would enable it to be lower down chest but not so low as to interfere with thigh.

Great clip, uniform and subject. Perhaps you could do a clip showing how the Navy uniform is assembled and configured, how the collar is attached, etc. It's also interesting how you explained that the Royal Navy (RN) had planned to introduce a separate work uniform before the war. I assume it was easier to continue manufacturing the existing Navy uniform/create an austerity version. Interestingly although it looks like 'too much trouble' to maintain as a day to day work uniform to a modern eye, the men that wore it must have felt a certain pride and esprit-de-corps in a way that overalls or similar work dress wouldn't have provided.

have you done any research into the SRS and their raids into occupied Greece ? It seems to be an overlooked aspect of ww2. An interesting clothing related article i once read, was about naval great coats being modified into 1940 pattern windproof smocks (in black/dark navy) to pass the commando's off as greek peasants/sheep herders.

Do you know anywhere to get good reproductions of the RN Jumper without zip and the silk with the bow?

Huh, the Dress Blues I wear are not much different than what the British wear.

Most navies essentially copied the RN after it adopted this uniform (in essence) in the late 1850s.

I have a question about the uniform. I own a Canadian WWII uniform. The gun shirt however is not cotton but rather feels like a wool flannel. Was this common? I am assuming we took our dress regulations from the RN.

Wool flannel shirts were the most common through out the commonwealth
