I wrote the how to article on this a couple years ago. I did it with a 4L60e when my ecm fried out. Didn't use light switches though. I used the neutral safety switch on the shift detent, a single momentary toggle switch, and a b&m quick silver ratchet shifter. Had all 5 gears (4 forward plus reverse) and torque converter lockup. And didn't have to flip light switches. Technically what you end up with is an analog computer.

I think you should create a "paddle shift" style system on the steering wheel. Using your forefingers to press paddles to upshift and downshift, with paddles or buttons on both sides of steering wheel, or mod a paddle system from a late model car. I can see your system turned into a serious performance quick shifting system, exactly like paddle shifters.

The solenoids need to be grounded with the switches. The transmission needs a 12v+ line that feeds it when the ignition is turned on (Pin E on the transmission connector). Solenoid A is Pin A on the transmission connector. This is grounded through one of the switches. Solenoid B is Pin B on the connector, also grounded through a switch. The torque converter lockup is Pin S, and it also needs to be grounded through a switch. I do not have any resistors connected at all.

@billylancer - grounding both solenoid isn't enough to make the gear selector lever command first gear (it is the only gear that has this limitation). For first gear SOL-A has to be grounded but SOL-B has to be open. You can overcome this if you understand something: there are pins on the transmission connector that go to ground depending in what gear the selector level is on. Knowing this you can hardwire SOL-B to be off when the selector is in physically in first gear. - Dan
@patrickgraceii77075 жыл бұрын
So how sol a has 3 wires you need to twist to ground. Rite so is the 3rd wire the line pressure switch.. that wire should be alone and always grounded or twisted up with sol a on the switch.. this is where i am at in my swap.. 85 k30 dually 6.2l diesel

@dougjones - yes I think you could do this. Four things I would be concerned with: trans temp if the converter is unlocked, lugging the engine, computer throwing codes, and warranty. But if you have those bases covered and are adventurous I think you could do it. You may also be able to have someone tune that behavior out alltogether in the computer. - Dan

Man, that truck looks awesome to drive! Total control over gear shifts and engine braking. Even the lockup! That's totally cool man. I'm running the stock TH350C in my truck. I've never tried gearing down to reduce the speed. Was worried I would hurt my trans. Though I have had to sit in one gear going downhill. It definitely reduces brake usage! But I don't think I would want to drive at highway speeds and drop it into first. It sure seems fun to shift like you do in that truck. But it would probably get old soon if your driving it every day. Anyways brother, Decent work man! Worth a subscribe I think! Keep updating man! Good stuff!
@mannfamilyMI10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It gets the job done, it is still in use the truck on a regular basis for things. It's a great work truck, I love old trucks, they are worth repairing and keeping. It's a vehicle that a shade tree mechanic can work on and keep for a very long time. Today's vehicles are awesome, but they are not as friendly when it comes to certain repairs. Heaven forbid in a newer vehicle you end up with a wiring issue buried somewhere in the middle of the engine harness...
@matth193910 жыл бұрын
Dan Mann Yeah I hear what your saying, totally man! These trucks are great. I can sit in the engine bay while I'm working on the truck. their very easy to work on, parts are cheap and readily available. its great! I love my 82 k1500. It was my grampa's before he died. I'm doing the whole body on it. Box, Doors, Front clip, Cab corners! It was used as a farm truck all its life, in an area that's real moist. So most of those parts are rusted. Plus its got huge dents on the passengers side. I have a feeling someone rolled it on its side while they were 4x4in. But the frame is solid, and the engine only has 107k in miles on it! So overall its Decent! I have a vid of it here on youtube, and I plan on putting more updates up of the trucks current state with in the next couple days. Its almost ready for the new parts..... But yeah man, newer cars are a pain forsure! Way too difficult to work on. Parts cost a crapload. Plus these older trucks can be tuned to perform just as well, if not better then the new ones! Anyways bro, have a good one!

Cheap DC PWM variable controller capable of direct output that's at least 25% higher then what the 'niods max draw (just dont get something silly, be trying to adjust micro pots with a tiny flathead while driving) I would look for one with with readout would be cooler but really you would want to set the top and bottom ranges using pressure gauge to see what pressure reading are at about 1200 and try to keep the fluid temp as close to 180-200F as you can while drive

I use a forced 4 shift box, its basically the same concept except allows a tiptronic or paddle shift, just electronic control of the solenoids instead of the light switches but your version is free 😁
@DavidB74743 жыл бұрын
If you buy the full manual conversion that plugs into the trans, all you do is connect power. It gives you full manual control and full line pressure, all the time. It does not require a computer. But where ever the shifter is that’s the gear you get. If you start in drive, you are starting in 4th gear. If you slam it into first gear at 80, that’s where it’s going. These controllers can be bought for around $200.

Might I recommend that if you want to use engine braking, instead of using the gear shift selector, just use the converter lockup, because that is what the shift lever is doing, just making the converter lockup more aggressive and engage until a much lower RPM.

I like an old all steel vehicle, not the weak things of today. This guy's got brains, me too but I have a broken back so I'm usually broke so I look for solutions like this one for my old steel!! I work on and drive stuff just like this here man. Never have to make payments on the old stuff, sure I've had a few newer vehicles in my time and when they quit I always go back to the old GM stuff, always and at that I'm quickly and reliably back on the road for minimum dollars using legit hacks quite similar to this. Peace!

loud? I didn't even realize your truck was running until you started moving.

Did the same thing on a couple of ECAT transmission. Was just curious if it could be done..

Probably 8 years too late, but you don't actually have to do any of this. You can ground the solenoid control wires to each other so that the only input you need is 12v power and the shifter itself. That way whatever gear you put the gear lever in is what gear the transmission is in. All you've gotta do is cut up a GM transmission pigtail

Are you sure about that? “In the absence of the PCM to control solenoid operation, you can use the pressure manifold assembly to substitute the necessary ground signals to energize the solenoids in the proper combination to provide full manual control.” atracom.blob.core.windows.net/gears/2015/2015-03/2015_3_32.pdf You need the ground to the solenoid to change based on the gear selector location. You can use the shifting truth table at the beginning of the linked article and wire the pressure manifold switches in a specific way so that the transmission shifts as expected, but you can’t just ground the solenoids to each other in my experience.

@@mannfamilyMI I just did it on my own vehicle with a 4l80e swap. I'd have to look up the pins again or crawl back under the car, but by soldering 3 wires together in one circuit on the pigtail, and 2 wires together in another circuit, you end up with full manual control via the shifter. Then all you have to run is a key switched 12v source via the pink power input wire, and a switched 12v supply to pin S for converter lockup if you're so inclined. There's a tutorial video on it floating around on KZbin.

@@kylefunston484 yeah you probably connected the pressures manifold switches to the solenoids. But if you ground both solenoids only at the same time your tranny should be in 4th gear. Your original comment made it sound like you could just ground A solenoid to B solenoid and apply power, that would be 3 wires only. I don’t think that would work, and I didn’t want someone to be confused after they tried it and it didn’t work.

@mightfab - yes I actually have an arduino. I just have to get a circuit to interface a VM sensor (an HEI module can probably do this). I have too many projects. The lt1 and 4l80e are coming out next year to power a 1970 Cutlass. I have an old 1979 Yamaha xs1100 with a MegaSquirt fuel injection system... I'd like to put one of those on the lt1 at some point. The internet=too many fun projects :-)

Could be wrong but I thought constant full line pressure was hard on the pump.

Forget the dead pedal and the shifter... Are those light switches mounted in the radio location?

Though it may have rougher shifts the transmission is stronger with full line pressure all the time

I wanna put a 4l80e in a 49 gm keep it auto I was researching and I thought I would just need a universal trans controller and the new stearing gear selector and fashion up some jig to controll the prnd any input would be appreciated thinking of putting in a turbo diesel

I had an old 68 chevy stepside with 3 on the tree/collum and the linkage was wore TF OUT! So I cut a hole in the floor on the linkage side and bolted 3 pieces of allthread through the gear selectors......I got where I could pull one out and push one in with my gas foot......It was hilarious to drive! It would stump 90% of the kids nowa days. LOL

So dan mann your way do you only switch ground solonoids a and b and lockup? Is pressure manifold wires a b and c constantly grounded ....or are they wired in solonoid a with pressure manifold wires a and b then switched to ground and solonoid b with pressure manifold c wire switchd to ground? Basically are all 3 pressure manifold wires constantly grounded to be a closed circuit or are they part of the switched setup??? Dan mann or anybody that has done this im at a pause till i get an answer

I love this thank you! So is up an down on your switches same as power on an power off. A up an B down Is that A has power an B has none? Lmk plz thank you

Super cool. , so when you say the swith is in the up/on position, does this mean that the switch is connecting to ground ?
