Manowar is one of those bands that are "elemental", in a sense that they have a sound of their own not like any others... You cannot dissect their sound, and that is what makes them a monumental band. Their discography is, in the end "Epic Metal" in all aspects... They sing about everything that is included in epics of yore: destruction, mental preparation, spiritual empowerment, pure aggression and vengeance, religious belief or devotion (regardless of religion), the aftermath, even partying loud... you mention it. They have written about every possible way to wage war in both fantasy and real history. And they do get passionate in their lyrics no matter the concept. They are a "love or hate" band and that is part of their charm. They would have a song about Native Americans written from the point of view of a Native American (Spirit Horse of the Cherokee) and at the same time, a song about life in the wild west (Outlaw). They would write about historical events like the Jonestown deaths (Guyana), or fictional depictions of the vantage points of people devoted to something, good or bad we don't judge, as long as it is pure (Dark Avenger, Bridge of Death). Much like "power and dominion" which stuck in your head, this happens in almost every song. They a way to describe very "accurately" and without any political correctness, as the idea is to describe not to judge the situation... A medieval warrior would indeed burn and pillage and rape... Yes, it is supposed to make you feel uneasy. War IS uneasy... A person devoting his life to Satan would say "grant me wings and as your messenger I'll fly"... And a religious zealot waging a "Holy War" would indeed say "Sweep these dogs from our kingdom. Bless this ground, our holy land."... At the same time songs like "Master of the Wind" and "Mountains" are more poetic and dreamlike and the lyrics are as well. Not everything "epic" should be about war, and those two songs are all about inspiration and self motivation. But when they do describe partying and having fun, they would equally be very vulgar and primal. All in all, whether you like them or not, they one thing true about them is that they are true and original, and that same "truth" is what is conveyed in their sound and lyrics.

Great analysis! Would you like to write a music psychology paper on the warrior archetypes in the metal genre?
@mariakythreotou3491
@mariakythreotou3491 5 жыл бұрын
To be honest, this could become an actual paper in music history and/or psychology. But personally, I would not limit this to metal, instead I would try to find how the "warrior archetype" was portrayed throughout music across civilizations and try to find patterns and similarities in how recurring themes are portrayed by seemingly different genres. This way, much like the "monomyth" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero%27s_journey), one could potentially find universal musical tendencies for the theme across centuries... But I am positive that this could be a research already done... I am not an academic in this particular field, only an enthusiast :)

As a passionate follower of this band for 22 years now (my first Heavy Metal piece As a 10 year old was "Achilles") this is one of the best , most accurate and just hitting the nail on the head explanations (or might I say mini essays ;) ) describing why this band was (!) so glorious , monumental and one of a kind, I have ever had the joy to read. Thank You! Hail and Kill !

Manowar is very much the musical equivalent of a Conan the Barbarian story. Rough, wild, altogether politically incorrect for the current era. Totally over the top. They're a wedge both inside the metal community and outside. Some love the band for both what they are and aren't. Others think they're ignorant meatheads. For a particular mood, they can be the exact thing. As a few others have said, great weight lifting music. Fun. Not to be taken too literally.

The whole concept of this band was to say that "we are all an army" and "we are all together at this". So that is why they were talking as if they were the leaders of an army against all odds. Also here in Europe they are very highly regarded and considered to be the forefathers of Epic Metal

Manowar is often considered a "missing link band" when it comes to their genre, technically speaking they are straight up heavy metal, but even the guys over at The Metal Archives tend to label them as a heavy/power metal hybrid band because of their strong influence on power metal, particularly the American strain that tends to be a bit more rugged and ballsy. Lyrically Manowar tend to be a kind of one-dimensional, Conan The Barbarian meets Vikings pillaging Christendom gimmick band, often times throwing in little vulgar metaphors here and there that have caused controversy in certain PC circles (Tipper Gore's PMRC group absolutely hated Manowar). If you ever go back to Manowar and you want to hear a song that is similar stylistically to this but lyrically a bit less brazen, songs like "Battle Hymns" and "Black Wind, Fire And Steel" are really good, though the best Manowar material in my opinion are their ballad work, particularly songs like "Master Of The Wind" and "Heart Of Steel", just utterly awesome and showcases vocalist Eric Adams' versatility as a vocalist. And your reaction is dead on regarding the vocals, Eric Adams has an incredibly powerful voice and despite punishing it on the road for the better part of 40 years, he can still hit a lot of those high notes.

Or, perhaps more accurately, what we have been calling "NWOBHM", or sometimes "speed metal", or some varieties of "doom metal", and today especially "power metal" are what we used to call just "heavy metal" or just "metal" before thrash metal hit the scene, burned out, and fractured into a bunch of little subgenres by the 1990s. Nobody seems to want to be caught dead being called just boring old "metal" or "heavy metal" anymore, in an age where everyone wants to be marketed under the latest fashionable subgenre banner, for some reason it's more fashionable and cool to get called "power metal" or "pirate metal" or "fifth wave neo-traditional doom" or whatever the catch-phrase of the day happens to be: you might get shelved next to Manowar, Saxon, Angelwitch, Dio, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Warlock, and those other guys and catch '80s cooties!
@hellsunicorn
@hellsunicorn 6 жыл бұрын
Pietyr Ayday I sympathize pretty strongly with your sentiments regarding the idiotic anti-80s trend that grew out of the 1990s, and honestly you can lay about as much of the blame for that on the antics of morons like Lars Ulrich as you could Kurt Cobain. Nevertheless, my biggest problem with what you are arguing here is that essentially heavy metal should have just clung to the stylistic orthodoxy that was dominant up until around 1985, music that refuses to evolve will wither and die. Furthermore, Ronnie James Dio, Saxon and some of the other names that you've dropped exhibited an attitude towards the European power metal movement that started in the late 1990s that was comparable to fatherly pride. I think the metal tent is big enough to accommodate both the ongoing New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal (aka bands who play and look more like the early 80s pioneers) and the laundry list of new bands that play in various niche genres. I likewise am kind of tired of the cliquish bullshit exhibited by people within each sub-group who shit on other styles because "reasons". On a final note, do we really have to be so dense that we can't recognize the huge stylistic divide that exists between what Manowar does and what Black Sabbath did in their various incarnations? The two bands were so radically different in sound that I think a sub-genre distinction between them was not only necessary, but inevitable.

Seen them live over 80 times. Mostly here in Europe where they have the most fanatic fans there is. First time was in 1984. No other band comes Close and yet I have seen all the big ones. You should react to "Battle Hymn" live from Earthsaker festival 2005 in Geiselwind. All former and present members of the band on stage at the same time together with 100 man strong choire and a symphony Orchestra. Nothing compares to Manowar and as they are soon ending their war against false metal and most of the poser bands are gone they really did achive the triumph of steel. And yes, the singer, Eric Adams is at a different level. Live he is out of this World. Other bands play, MANOWAR Kills. You should react also to "Heart of steel". That song should be the Anthem of metal.

Manowar fans are actually fucking crazy. When I was 12 or 13, about 20 years ago I could actually sneak into dim lighted rock bars in the city I live in Turkey. When their songs came up all those calm looking biker like guys used to get up on their tables and chug their beers like animals. I saw one chrash a pint glasson his head out of ecstasy of the song. If anyone else would do that shit they'd be thrown out. But not them. Been to a lot of places in europe and watched them live; turns out all Manowar fans are alike. They LITERALLY have the power to raise an army that could make the isis look like little girls with popsicles. Not kidding.

Manowar is, as others have noted, very much based around barbarians/vikings/etc. The group is very much into military, armies, and music around those things. Hail and Kill is a commander exhorting his men before they go into battle. The fight they are heading into isn't going to be a technical war, but it's going to be a bloody hand-to-hand battle. Back in the days of the viking hordes, killing servants having their way with the women, etc. were spoils of the winning army. Much of their music revolves around Norse mythology, and they have later albums solely about it.

How about ANNIHILATOR - "Annihilator"? I bet they'd like the groove, but at the same time the song is a little repetitive so from a certain point of view this is even less accessible than "Alice". You need to know what Jeff is capable of to fully appreciate "Annihilator". Kind of hard to tell what is the best point of entry into Annihilator.

There is one song by Manowar that includes the titles of a number of their songs in the lyrics (Death Tone, March for Revenge, Sign of the Hammer, Blood of a King, etc). If you take those song titles, find those songs, and listen to them in the order they are listed in that song, in a bizarre way they end up telling a story.

Warriors of the World was the first album to disappoint, and the beginning of their downfall. Their last flawless album was Louder Than Hell, and their best album is probably Triumph of Steel, though Sign of the Hammer holds a special place for me. If you suggest a song or album, you should recommend something from their hayday, their prime, not fucking warriors of the world. People who request that song/album makes me think they're never heard any of the classic, good, Manowar, and you settle for something newer. Try Ride the Dragon, or Power of Thy Sword, Brothers of Metal, etc... Good songs.

Manowar is one of my favorite bands and I love this song! The whole band is really good. They write a lot of songs about Greek mythology. Two songs I love from them are. Achilles, Agony, and Ecstasy which is about the battle of Achilles against Hector. It has a great drum solo, a great electric guitar solo, and a great acoustic guitar solo. The second song is Master of the Wind which is a polar opposite of this song. It's a ballad, very mellow and uplifting song. This band has many great songs, some mellow and some hard. They are definitally worth more of a listen.

This just popped in my feed and made me smile. Always love seeing people get intro'd to Manowar. I believe they are 3 times Guinness Book of World Record holders for loudest band, breaking their own record each time. One of my favorite songs of theirs is "Carry On" and I HIGHLY recommend giving it a listen / reaction for it has deeply touched my soul and stayed with me. When it first came out, I was just graduating and getting into the military. While in the last stages of my A.I.T. training my grandmother passed away from cancer and I listened to this track over and over around the time of her funeral. It's message resonated so hard and helped me process. Hope you enjoy it!

I've always said that manowar were inspiration for the more bard and Viking metal styles. If you listen to a lot of their music the themes tend to be story telling and often of a Viking nature. They have also had elements of the ridiculous, as you see in the album art and some of the more ... "outlandish" lines they come up with lol. But it's always been high energy music to mosh too basically. And the stories are sometimes cool. Gloves of metal is one of my faves, and the line in hand of doom "I will hunt you down and tear you limb from limb, nothing shall remain, not your memory or name. It'll be as if you never ever lived" is just epic to sing along too. Which I find is a speciality of theirs, even though you two weren't a huge fan you still found buts you'd probably enjoy singing along too. That's in almost if not all their work. Check out masters of the wind by manowar for a completely polar opposite feel, much more about the story and the vocals than powerful rifts.

Im laughing my ass off! I mean you just cant trust the audience some times. There are so many great songs by Manowar and the majority suggested THIS. To two guys that come from a totally different background. Lol. Its like the black sheriff character in Blazing Saddles lol. Ok Manowar were very big during the 80s because of their great vocals and powerfull music. And I mean powerfull in db. Dio had mainly fantasy themes. But where Dio was Lord of the Rings, Manowar were Savage Sword of Conan mixed with those italian barbarian b movies and the local biker club. They have moments of brilliance. And sometimes their epic niche really works. But also they have alot of clownish cheesy moments. All this macho stuff and posing should be taken with a truckload of salt, or else an unsuspected listener (of this day, cause back then people got the refferences right away) might think that crushed in some nazi party lol. Nevertheless Hail to England is probably one of the best metal albums ever created and Eric Adams certainly one of the best frontmen.

Manowar kind of fit right in with the general '80s aesthetic that went into '80s fantasy movies, '80s horror, '80s cartoons, '80s toys, '80s pro wrestling, '80s fashion, '80s everything: Simple and simplistic, colourful, exaggerated, over-the-top, cartoonish, vaguely silly, and definitely a product of their time. If you can embrace the cheese and theatrics of anything '80s, then there's a good chance it'll be highly enjoyable.
