Here's how to change the E36 rear brake shoes, and it's not a fun job!
If your handbrake is weak or ineffective you may need to change the parking brake shoes.
It is also important to adjust the handbrake once the job is completed, all shown in this guide along with a change of the brake pads and a clean up of all the assembly parts!
Thanks for watching!

Hello everyone, for those who need it, I uploaded a short video of the process to install the brake shoe springs here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5y4m5eZmqmKeK8

Excellent job. I watched quite a few of these vids and you were the only one who reinstalled the adjuster facing the proper 'downward' direction.

Superb video, thanks so much Pamo. Brilliant presentation, clear and concise. The best video explaining these brakes. Worked for my BMW E91 as well. The test card was a bit unfair as you skipped the hardest bit! I understand why though as it's a real struggle. To remove the shoes I levered the top of the shoe out of the adjuster. To put the new shoes in I joined the top spring, fitted the adjuster, installed the shoes, fitted the spring pins then levered the bottom spring in with a screwdriver. Getting the disc off, even with the handbrake backed off, required lashings of WD40 and a big hammer.

The only part I needed was skipped. How do you put the main spring on around the cable lever ? I have one side out and its a nightmare, could not get the spring to stretch and hook on the hole. You also skipped it , so I'm guessing my 40 minutes of trying is what you did. It would have been nice to show it.

@@BoQ7NiiZz I did it. I went to an auto parts store and got a "special" plier, called brake spring plier. Weird looking end with a small hook. It made is a tiny bit easier, but still super hard. I also got a friend helping with the stabilizing the spring. Tough to get it through that small area and keep it steady to pull it all the way up. Not easy

What's the usual interval on the shoes? Mine's (an E46) about to reach 80,000 and I'm doing the rear discs and pads; wondering whether or not to bother with the shoes.
@ManSeeksCivic

I'm not sure but they are cheap and not as difficult to change as they seem. After 80k I'm fairly sure they'll be well worn.

Is grease the best thing for that lubricant? Wouldn't it attract dirt
@ManSeeksCivic
@ManSeeksCivic 3 жыл бұрын
It's a trade off. Yes it will attract dirt, but the benefit outweighs the downside in my opinion. These mechanisms suffer quite badly now. Anything to help them out makes me happy.

I'm no expert but it should be similar to mine. Unless it's an lsd diff.
@kimblewt
@kimblewt 4 жыл бұрын
@@ManSeeksCivic Thanks, yes, its got a lsd. I guess first get under and rotate a wheel to hear the clonk.
@ManSeeksCivic
@ManSeeksCivic 4 жыл бұрын
And check to make sure that there's no leaks, change the fluid for good new lsd diff oil and once all that's done you'll have a good idea of the condition! The m3 diff is known for a clunk - I believe due to the backlash between the pinion and main gear set. Rebuilding an lsd diff is a whole other ball game than my video though, and best left to the professionals. 👍
