I wouldn't buy the expensive ones. Taxes, heating costs, cleaning costs, energy,...... That adds up and would be too expensive for most people. Even if the house costs only a dollar I wouldn't like to own it.

@@gabrielledavis1827 60s, 70,s and early 80s for me. Working most of the time. I grew up in Warren. We visited relatives who lived on Linden near Henry Ford hospital nearly every weekend. I was blown away at what it looked like during a visit back in 2010. So many burned-out houses on every street. Too many good people trapped in those neighborhoods. The airport driver assured me he carried as he drove me to the hospital :-)

I purchased my house dirt cheap, banks wouldn’t finance it because very little had ever been updated in it (built in 1881). Because of that, the owners had no choice but to sell it very cheap. Yes, it needed a lot of work, but paying full cash and still being able to live in it (though not always comfortably) as the work was slowly done, has rewarded me with a house I own. No mortgage is awesome!

I don't have that kind of patience. The houses in which I have lived through their partial remodeling and renovation, oh How I wished I had rented a hotel for a week. That would have been far easier on my nerves.

Two problems. Property taxes & maintenance costs. The electric bill alone could be $10,000/month. Homeowners insurance would be another bill. Usually people earning a million a month perfer to get an architect and build there own dreams.

For example, I worked at the Mayo Clinic and it is this huge center in the middle of nowhere plus it gets really cold but rich people from all over the world come to for care year round. Its been the top hospital in the whole country for years. These mansions could be turned into high end rehab/hospital or something similar with all those rooms and the isolation.

The Mayo Clinic was built for the Mayo family by a religious organization, not a business group, called "The Sisters of St Francis" in 1899. Although they built a highly successful practice, their current size occurred over a period of a century. The remoteness of many of these properties is also a problem because hospitals require places for staff to live, shop and send their kids to school. They are also dependent on major population centers as a source of customers.

I bought a 700 sq ft home built 1897 near downtown Salt Lake City in 2011 for $90k on a decent sized lot for the area. We lived in it for about 7-8 years and then dumped $70k into gutting it and renovating it with maple cabinets, stone countertops, modern electrical, alder barn doors and mosaic tile work. Sold it summer 2021 for $350k. Many told me it wasn’t worth renovating but after all of my expenses etc. I made 150k on the sale. It was worth it to me.

Maintenance would be so expensive that nonprofits would find it impossible to raise enough $$ to operate. If you have $100 to donate to a homeless shelter, would you give it to an organization that serves 200 homeless people housed in an uber mansion that costs millions a month to operate or to one that serves 50 homeless people but costs $10,000 a month to operate? Which gives you more bang for your buck? Even if you run a government agency - which option would be more acceptable to taxpayers?

Also, because housing for homeless or battered individuals should be just as adequate as housing for the rest of us, the cost of bringing these properties up to acceptable standards would also be a tough sell to nonprofits if there are alternatives that wouldn’t require such outlays of capital. Most of us would rather see our donations going directly to those who need help than to a bunch of contractors doing rehab on dilapidated houses. That’s why donors should always pay attention to a nonprofit’s operating and capital expenditures.

Taxpayers already absorb the cost of the homeless as well as give dollars and change to daily. Then you have the homeless family looking for the 53rd room. Not to mention the concerns of safety. You never hear about the violence, abuse and rape that occurs in the homeless community. Fantasy worlds always neglect reality.

You're going to need at LEAST the following: one cook (and by that, I mean the person does nothing but cook, not even pick up the mail outside), a butler, at least two maids (that's a looooot of rooms to clean) plus one has to live on site several days out of the week and probably someone to do everything logistics related: pick up groceries, buy window cleaner, buy paper towels, soap, toilet paper, etc. And last but not least, since you're adopting a lot of kids, you would need a babysitter or two. All that would cost a fortune in itself. A youtuber who is the captain of a privately owned yacht mentioned this is one reason why yachts costing over $25 million are sometimes sold dirt cheap: the staffing/maintenance was just too much...

One thing you also forgot to mention with the houses in Detroit and I'm assuming many other places, the land tax goes by the home's appraisal value. And also the taxes still owed. Just because you pay $1 or even $5,000, if the home was last appraised for $50,000, that's what the taxes are. Even the empty lots aren't listed as a bare lot. So taxes are for the house that was on the lot before it burnt down or was demolished. This may only be about back taxes and maybe you can get things re-appraised and changed for a bare lot, that' I'm not sure of. But it's why I couldn't go downstate and buy one in the suburbs for say $3,500 like I was looking at. Also the past owner may not be happy with the new one, never know what can happen...

One of the things not mentioned here are the property taxes on these big houses. Sure, the houses may sell for less than market value but then the property taxes would be astronomical. Property taxes are calculated by determining the true market value (as determined by your local government) In many of these cases the property taxes would cost more than the house.

Property taxes? In the UK that big house would cost you NO MORE than $3000 a year. If you lived in it on your own you'd get 25% off. That $3000 is the highest Council tax charge in England and would apply even if you bought Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. We don't have an annual property tax based on value as such, it's just an assessed charge worked out on value (or estimated value if built later) in 1992? (May be a year or two out).

Another option for some of the properties is deconstructing for re-use... like Habitat for Humanity and other housing groups. Possibly some houses can be repurposed into a tiny house for new residents. Habitat houses don't have to be built with new materials. People can choose what they want in their new house. Small homes are better than large homes. Solar and other alternative energy sources can be added to the new building.

I’m originally from Michigan, and another reason that most people don’t want to buy homes in the actual city of Detroit and not the suburbs, are the taxes. Part of the city’s financial plan (at least I’ve heard) since they’ve lost so many residents, is to have higher property taxes to help pay for things in the city. That on top of the cost of fixing up some of the old homes, and the fact that living there it could take a very long time for your neighborhood to be in a better state, and it’s been seriously hard to bring residents in. However, some large businesses have moved in, because the city gives them financial tax BREAKS and incentives to move in. So it’s a mess. Detroit has a lot of potential geographically and otherwise, but it could seriously take 100 years for the entire actual city of Detroit to be beautiful again. Downtown is looking better and better, and I really admire people’s efforts there. But wow would I not have the patience to move there myself.

I was thinking something similar. The Lake Superior could be rented as a camping motel, taxidermy animals donated to a zoological museum, guns to collectors. Or just disposed. Michael Jackson's house could be a theme park mixed with a museum, just marking the areas, and info personal keeping the museum part 'free of play'. That 50c & posse place could be a shelter: just selling the stables (or was that Jackson's house). These mega mansions... money well spent!? Better just keep investing and donating. If you want to treat your friends, buy a hotel and hire a pro manager. Once your friends visit, treat them a suite for the weekend or month they stay. In a mansion the empty rooms are sure to starts to creep on you. Won't feel home. If you don't ask 50 of your best friends and relatives come to live with you, maybe with a rent adjusted to their incomes (and then with a discount) so they stay sane.
