Foreigners worldwide visit Prague Czech Republic, and Poland due to its rich history and unique culture. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience in Prague due to what I believe, is its preexisting history of scams and scammers.
I didn't feel welcome in the Czech Republic and sadly left the country after just 24 hours in Prague, and it made me realise how well I was treated in Poland. In this video, I share my honest story of travelling to Poland and the Czech Republic as a foreigner (black guy) in Central Europe.

Hi there, Sheku. It’s funny you say that about Prague. I am a white middle aged woman from the UK and I went with my family to Prague to see the sights. I also found them sullen and unhelpful. I came to the conclusion that they know their city has a world class reputation and they are complacent. They don’t have to make an effort and people will still visit Prague. We also visited Poland on another occasion and found them very welcoming and helpful. I think they are a bit off the beaten track and get overlooked. Also the food was far, far better in Poland. So your experience mirrors our own.

Well as a local I can say there is one more aspect ... the situation is pretty similar to other bucket list cities like Barcelona, Venizia etc. People are a bit sick of the overtourism. It is actually a bit better after the pandemic but it was really horrible before. I mean I dont blame the people. I am part of the problem when I travel but it can get a bit annoying living in a citi with such problem.

Poland, before the war and its participation, was the most multicultural place in the world. Every religion's nationality and skin colour were equal; it was also one of the first countries where simple people got their rights, and the King never owned a single person's life. King wasn't allowed to kill someone just because, like in other western countries, This attitude brings troubles because other nations are afraid of it and invade Poland to stop it. Keep that in mind. There is a lot of respect in Poland for guests.

I’m not sure if our country was such a fairyland… Feudal system lasted longer than in Western Europe. Yes, there was a period in the history when our country was the most tolerant in Europe hence such a large Jewish population (before 1939 it was largest in Europe). I think we have our issues but we are ok nation overall.
@Aszniko
@Aszniko Жыл бұрын
@@natalias50 The system wasn't bad at all. Every person has the possibility of becoming a landowner, a knight, or a noble. It's all about tolerance. The king did not have absolute power; it stayed in the hands of a noble people who represented his land and its people who worked for the noble man. As long as you were doing your part for the system, everything was fine. Anyway, the topic is about culture, religion, and skin colour. That part did not matter at all; everyone in this aspect was equal and respected. The social hierarchy that comes from the system is a different story, but still, that system in Poland was very different than in the west, so this was the reason why other Kings and their families did all they could to stop it and not spread the ideas to the other counters.

I think the Polish people are so much more open to the world, they are so educated and they travel and follow the west in thinking. There are always those racist people all over the world and their minds most likely will never change. Maybe their children. Let’s hope. These people are insecure and angry folks. I have lived in Poland 5 summers except covid years and found the people so happy to greet me and help me with all my questions and inquiries. Yes, I don’t have the struggles that you face. But I’m old and old folks in USA are pretty much not seen. I love Poland. I may be living their permanently soon. The USA is crumbling with so many people with hate and anger in their souls. It is shameful how the USA has declined. It’s never been free of racism but now you can include hate toward anyone that isn’t white, male, a gun lover, or different than the stereo typical gender role they don’t understand. Even the poor. The poor and mentally ill in USA are abandoned and not cared for. In Poland old people are revered as everyone’s “Grandma, Grandpa, and Auntie”. So I am a revered “Auntie” in Poland. It’s so nice to be a stranger respected. I’m so sorry that because of the color of your skin you are often mistreated (An understatement), but I watch your videos to know you better and understand you. I hope we will meet in Poznan, Kazmierz Dolny, Warsaw, or Gdansk this next May. Your “Auntie” invites you to lunch. 😉😊.

I am originally from Prague and many visitors do the same mistake, the go to disneyland in center (it's not actual city, no people live there, it's just one big tourist trap) and they think this is how whole Prague looks like, but disneyland is only 1% of Prague area, they should just go and visit other places. I see that he visited Prague during covid, we also visited Vienna during the worst covid situation and it could be part of the problem, especially in Vienna, it was really annoying, you had to fill some papers everywhere, everything in German only and nobody helps to you, also they didn't speak English there, but on other hand, muslims in Vienna were kind and all of them spoke English.

There's some Czech dude on KZbin exposing currency scams for years. On the other hand, I've met some really nice guy in rural part, very helpful, he gave me some groceries as all stores were closed on Sunday and he didn't want to hear about any payment. It's not smart to generalise, but even in politics they are trying to scam Poland into closing neighbouring power plant (in cooperation with Germany as they are trying to destroy their neighbour economically), while their mines and power plants are to blame for environmental disaster in this region, so that says something xD I'm drawing this out, a bit simplified and seemingly unrelated, for a broader context as some nations are just like that. Blame state propaganda or mutual scars between different societies, whatever - there's always a reason and deeper meaning in everything. Yes, food is better there and their cities were not torn down to the ground during the war, so Prague is really beautiful.

Yeah, everyone is bad and trying to hurt Poland and Poles are the best and never did anything wrong. That's such typicaly Polish mindset, everyone is just hurting you and you are always just victim and everyone is bad. Maybe you should think about that sometimes things happen with some reason, like in 1919 during the 7 day war, Poles still believe to total shits like that one we attacked you on purpose to help Soviets....WTF? Our legionares were still stucked in Russia in that time, fighting both, reds and whites and we are also war with Hungary in the same time, but Poles have always that syndrom "everyone bad, we good" and they still believe to that. Poles care only about their bussines and when it's not possible to talk with them and have a deal countries have to do what they have to, like we did together with Germany because your stupid mine is taking water even from German wells and if EU didn't force you do build at least that underground wall, there would be not water at all on our side of border and that moron who thinks we are racists is even loving your comment without finding some facts. Poles can be really pain in ass, spreading some 100 years old propaganda against Czechs...That's why we speak about leaving V4 group, beause this panoptikum group is pointless now, after Slovak president ends (she doesn't want to candidate again), we will be only remaining really free and democratic country in V4 surrounded by religion extremist and people who want to shoot everyone who is not straight, but black person is loving your comment because you are poor victim Pole, so you must be correct. 😀 And don't take me wrong, I like Poland and Poles, but it's better to not talk about history with Pole, because they just know nothing, they are like Americans of Europe, in some aspects, they act the same as Russians, you learn your version of history wehre everyone bad, Poland good, but that's very simplified history, when you say A, you should also say B.

Well, Prague is definitely overrated, I say it as a Czech citizen. The entire city center is a kind of Disneyland, nothing like an authentic atmosphere was preserved there, and the number of scammers is also high. The number of normal people living in the center of Prague is very, very low, most tenants were expelled in the last decades. So I assume the people you tried to interact with were barely local Czechs. I usually avoid visiting Prague unless necessary and prefer Poland to spend my vacations there. On the other hand, what exactly did you expect? The annoying fake American smiling, the very fake phrase "how are you" while NOBODY wants to know how you are, the shallow "friendships" which disappear the next day? I think this is all about the general difference between peach and coconut psychology. In general, Czechs and Poles are very similar in their psychology and approach, but as I try to speak Polish in Poland, they VERY much appreciate it and are very kind to me.

You could at least google how it's written firstly, we are not Chechs and even when there is massive improvement in Poland in last 10 years (I am visiting Poland pretty often, so I saw a lot there), you still can find places which are frozen in time and it looks like in 1995 or something, even in very tourist cities like Gdańsk it felt like in 90s when I left train there. In Katowice, when you leave center, it's not like in 90s, it's like in 80s and your tram rails are in terrible condition in every city I visited, maybe except Warsaw, but Poles don't see that because they think flying people in tram are normal thing, but it's not a normal thing, just your rails are in terrible condition. 😀 But what I like in Poland is that you have better modern architecture and your train/road infrastructure is getting better faster than ours. But you can't really say that your cities are better maintained than Czech cities, everything is new here now, even some small villages have completely new train stops, everything is nicely restored, old patched asphalt was removed and classic cobblestones are back almost in all cities, you can find some ugly places everywhere, especially in poorer border regions, but generally, from countries I visited, it looks the best here. After I visited Vienna, I will never say a bad word about Prague again, Vienna looks like Prague in 90s, but people don't believe me because it's "west" so it must be nice and we are "communist" so it must be ugly, but it's already vice versa, Czech or Polish cities both look better than cities in western europe. But yes, sometimes I am shocked when I visit some Czech city which looks like 20 years ago, we both have such places, but they have them even in western europe and you can't imagine how crazy places you can find in countries like Portugal or Spain, people literally throw trash out from windows there.

Keep living in the past and visit your neighbour Bratislava some time. Perhaps you could learn how to build something new and tall from them for a change. They've just built quite a nice skyline by the river. @@janeeyre6188 Everyone who visited Bratislava said that it's ugly city, if I visited Slovakia, I think I would go to Košice instead, but Slovaks are not ok in last few years, most of them are nazis or some proPutin scum, I don't really want to travel there now, I would better go to Poland again than to some crazy Slovakia. Poland is changing fast because you have more autoritative government, here in Czechia, it's not that easy to build highway or new rail roads because owners od land are blocking that for decades and we can't do anything with that, while in countries like Poland, government will just force them to sell it, everything is too complicated here because our private property religion went to far and you can't touch anything, even when some building is dangerous, we have many such cases, unfortunately our laws are pretty bad in this case, but at least you know they will not steal your property without really serious reason. And we can't build tall buildings, because sight keepers will not allow that, you have "advantage" that everything was destroyed during WWII, so even when you rebuilt it, it's not historical anymore, so it's easier for you to build something new, but here, sight keepers block everything and also our cities are very hilly and panorama can be in UNESCO list, so you can't change it by building some skyscrappers, many other countries have the same problem. But what I don't like is that when they actually allow some modern building, it's mostly ugly, I would prefer western style skyscrappers instead of that ugly concrete architecture with little windows where every windows is on different level and has different size, it's the worst architecture, but this 2005-like architecture is still beying build because of process of allowing construction takes years here, it can be even 10 or 15 years, so they are just building architecture by 15 or even older projects, which I don't like, but better than vice versa and having architectonical anarchy like they have in Ukraine, in Russia and in Balkan countries where everyone can build everything, that looks even worse. I visited Krakow this winter again after 5 years and I would say it actually looked better in 2017 when I visited it for the first time or maybe it looked better to me when it was nice summer weather. But I like your red brick industrial architecture and abandoned places because I am fun of urbex, so poland is like heaven in this case for me, there is something almost in every street while here, they already demolished most of such places.

@@Pidalin well when speaking about urbanism, architecture and even housing design in Czechia sometimes it can be noted, that it also comes from the 90th or early 2000s. @@RusBrother1991 Yes, that is a problem, it's more like from 2005-2010 than from 90s, in 90s, everything looked the same as during communism, people started painting everything with these crazy colors around like 2003. Now many of these buidlings are going thru another renovation after 20 years and they are making those colors more mild and tasteful, because it's not 2005 anymore. But it's true that a lot of Czech have what I consider a very bad tase for architecture. I like functionalism, art deco, cubism and these styles from 20s and 30s, today standard is to have every window in different level and with different size, sometimes when I see some new building, I am almost vommiting from that. 😀

Of course tourists are treated better in less touristy areas - that is literally an universal law. In less touristy places in Czechia like Olomouc, Brno or even Pardubice, you will be treated much better than in Prague where all the foreign scammers try to scam the incoming tourists. Wandering in streets around Charles bridge and the Prague castle, 99.9% of people around are tourists from different continents and a majority of workers / scammers are foreigners too. It is really a different world that locals try to avoid at all costs.

The problem with Prague is that its overtouristed like Barcelona or Venice. I think people are more open in Olomouc or Plzen. In Krakow glowny (central station)(Poland) i once tried to get a train ticket, in Dvur Kralove Zoo (Czech republic) i tried to get an entrance ticket. Both places the staff was oh you only speak english, not my language - I don't get money enough to speak a foreign language (the ticket seller said this to her colleague in czech at Dvur Kralov Zoo) So sorry to hear you had a terrible day in Prague. But the country has other cities to offer.

Exactly, I am saying it under all of such videos, problem is overtourism, you barely meet a native Czech in Prague center, it's just full of tourist traps, Romanian cheaters and black drug dealers and stay, tourists are that stupid that they don't left "disneyland" in center and they think this is how Prague looks like and how Czech people act, Czech people can sometimes act like rednecks, but they are not cheaters. Also, Prague is full of Russian/Ukrainian/Balkan mafia now and tourists don't know that these people are not Czechs, they don't hear the difference between our accents, but it's annoying even for a Czech person to go to Prague center full of these annoying Russian speakers who are trying to sell some fake tourist shit to you and they are rude when you don't want to buy that. It's even more visible now with wave of Ukrainian refugees, most of them are really refuguees (I hope) but that mafia gopniks are hiding between them and pretending beying refugees and Prague is plagued by them now and these people from eastern europe carry knives and can be really dangerous. This is not Czech culture nor Czech behavior. After this fucking war ends, you should just kick all Russian speakers out of country without any mercy. And about Romanians, we have them in our work and they are really thieves and cheaters, most of them, they steal everything what is not concreted to the ground, but again, tourist meets a Romanian cheater in Prague and he doesn't know it's not Czech.

You go to tourist Disneyland in center of Prague and expect what? You won't meet any native Czechs there, just Russian/Ukrainian/Balkan mafia and fake tourist stuff, local people go there only when they really have to. Everything is destroyed by overtourism and English speaking expats who live there and increasing prices because they still earn UK/US money and live here for cheap, so native people are angry because of that. I think you will have such experiences from most ot places with such overtourism. Also, as a Czech, I felt the same in Vienna, people were not friendly and nobody will help you with anything. In some other countries, people are vice versa too friendly, which is also annoying, because as a Czech, I am used to that when somoene is trying to help you, he will want money from you, but that happened to me even in Poland. So, it's really weird experience when someone is helping me without asking him and he doesn't want money then, I am not used to it. 😀 When I've been to Vienna, I returned home 2 days sooner than it was planned because we just didn't like it there, in Prague, you just can't stay only in tourist center, that's not actual Prague, that's disneyland for tourists. I said it several times under other videos, but people, please don't go only to that disneyland in center of Prague, I don't understand why you stay there, it's just 1% of Prague area and you will barely meet any Czechs there.

The scammers and picpockets are quite active and skilled in Czech republic. Even traveling here from Romania and some other eastern countries, to make their bags. Problem is, that in the midle of Prague (historical core) most of single black guys you see, are "working" as drug dealers. That might kinda shroud the understanding of reasons, why are you trying to talk to people on the street. Not to mention, in summer, there is more than 95% of people in the historical core actual tourists from different countries. BTW google maps is trademously helpfull in direction finding, if there is no knowing or willing person around.

Finally someone who said some valid points. That stupid disneyland in center, full of Romanian cheaters and black drug dealers is detroying our reputation and we should finally do something with that, visitors think that this is how we act here in Czechia, they don't care that they didn't meet any actual Czech there and didn't left disneyland because many of them don't even know that Prague is bigger than 2 square km in center, we should really do something with that, it's terrible.

Prague is way, way different than the rest of the country. I think this sort of contrast can only be observed in France, really. Where people in the capital are sort of cold, posh and those that are not so, are scammy or rude. Same thing happens in the Czech Rep. Once you go to the province, your perception is going to change. I think Poland is much more uniform in that sense. That being said I agree with other comments saying that Czechs have some sort of a superiority complex, or small town mentality. Of course not all of them. But they do feel that they are the "Germans of the Slavic people" (even if they would vehemently disagree with this statement) and tend to project their supposed "being civilized" on other nations from the region. They tend to be much more reserved, private, calm and organized than we Poles are. And I presume some of the comments would say that we love the Czechs, and they don't like us, but that's not really the case. The Czechs are AFRAID OF US. To them, we seem utterly unpredictable, uncivilized at times, bigoted, overconfident, and too lavish. They are scared that some of our "craziness" might spill on their tails. That's true, once you get to know the Czech soul a bit more you will notice that. :)
