Mantis shrimps typically grow to around 10 centimetres (3.9 in) in length. A few can reach up to 38 cm (15 in).The largest mantis shrimp ever caught had a length of 46 cm (18 in) and was caught in the Indian River near Fort Pierce, Florida, in the United States.

The farms in Malaysia breed mantis prawns indoors in fibre glass containers with a foot of water until they are 1 foot long. Then export to China, HongKong, Japan, Taiwan and Korea.

These little dudes are a lot tougher texture when you cook them than regular shrimp. I was lucky enough to find a lb of these at a local market so I picked them up to try. I saved the claws and some of the tail pieces to make into jewelry later, including the claws-in-a-bottle specimen necklace i'm currently wearing. :)

@@deandredunbar9618 BTW, can confirm this. The dark, longer speared mantis shrimp (dont know which species) is tougher like a lobster meat. The flowery shorter speared mantis shrimp with wider body (but a little bit shorter), is more flavorful and 50% more expensive by weight. Source: Spent 6 days in Vietnam. I ate 3 different types of lobsters, 2 different types of mantis shrimp, 6 different types of shrimp/prawns, 3 different types of squid/cuttlefish and 4 different types of crabs.

FYI those aren’t mantis shrimps but thalassinid shrimps or commonly called sea ghost shrimps and in some places, mud lobsters. Mantis shrimps don’t have pincers, they have scythe like their land counterparts, praying mantis.

In US, we dig them out, using a pump and use them for fishing bates. We don't eat them. Regular shimps are very cheap.

Mantis shirmp known as alupihang dagat in the Philippines..During my teen years Bacoor Bay was teeming of almost alll edible shellfishes ; Kahit arawa araw may nangunguha o nanghuhuli nito sa dagat ay hindi maubos ubos ang mga ito .
