Mantis Shrimp VS Decorator crab - Live Feeding

In this video I offer Bruce my peacock mantis shrimp a decorator crab for a treat and what follows is something I never would have predicted!

The fish were super curious. People totally underestimate fish/animals intelligence, they know he's new, and are super inquisitive. Also, that's what a decorative crab excels at, being invisible. I think the shrimp either just didn't know he was food, or preferred other things that didn't look like rocks ha.

Interesting. I always thought mantis shrimp go berserk on anything that moves. Shows how intelligent they are where individuals can behave so different from others. Maybe they’re not mindless killing machines

Maybe that's why the decorator crab does what he does, as for as it's decorations! It may have confused Bruce with all of its decor, or maybe Bruce just appreciated it!!

I think Bruce's thinking is the crab hiding in loose rocks and he doesn't want to punch the rocks he want to connect with the shell of the crab. The wrestling match may have been his way of trying to "dig" the crab out of the rocks or to get a better look at what was moving under the rocks. He realized he couldn't or decided it wasn't worth the effort to eat this wierd moving lump of debris. Regardless, well done decorator crab.

Bruce’s tempering with that fish is crazy. Every mantis shrimp I’ve seen is 100% aggro with everything.

The most peaceful Mantis Shrimp i've ever seen, Bruce also don't mind the other fish moving around his territory. Other Mantis Shrimps i've seen were very territorial and attack anything that's within their territories.

Mantis shrimp have 12 or so color receptors. The decorator crab just was left alive because Bruce wanted to see new designs around his home

Just found your channel cool videos. I was originally a marine biologist I still find sea creatures fascinating you just never know how species will interact to each other. We call them thumbsplitters here on the Outerbanks of North Carolina. Because when u catch them in a shrimp net and your sorting the shrimp and other creatures on the culling board or sorting table. In a split second they can literally break your thumb nail with a single strike or slice you to the bone. Interesting creature mantis shrimp. Horseshoe crabs quite interesting as well. Very interesting, the decorator crab is a master of disguise. It is a surprise that the crab's camo would work even in a close environment like this. If it is able to blend in enough to remain this close to a fierce predator in the wild, it would give it access to "protected" space.

Hey you wouldn't believe it. Using a lot of the tools you helped us with on the last video we picked up our newest member of the family Skrimpy (daughters named). I spent all of the time and money on getting the pvc pipes etc.. The first thing Skrimpy did was find a small crack in the rocks. I tried to coax him into the pvc with food he went in and ran out. lol so he has decided that his den is next to the pvc. Oh well win some loose some. Was Bruce always so blue or is it the light? I did figure out that he is ok with some fish as long as they stay out of his den lol. The real issue I am having is that my clean up crew keeps disappearing. lol

That's great news I'm sure skrimpy will find his home sooner or later 😁 Bruce is really that blue and always has been! Cleanup crew is a case of frequently replenishing, try spiny astrea snails if you can I've found Bruce struggles to crack their shells (although they do need saving from lying outside his den often).

Sorry for the delay in replying just seen your comment. I got Bruce from Kracken corals however I have not seen one in there for a while. Most good lfs should be able to source one for you if you ask but it may take a while for them to find one, good luck!

Consider some sort of large fresh water crustacean (as it will have less of a likely hood to carry disease) or maybe a hermit crab
