It’s refreshing to see someone finally post decent content about Peacock mantis shrimp. Way too much on KZbin showing these animals kept in horrid living conditions with no burrow, no place to hide, in a space too small for them to range free, etc. Many have such bad cases of shell rot you can tell the water quality is awful. You’ve actually created a habitat for Bruce which is undoubtedly why he’s lived so long (anyone who keeps a healthy Peacock for 2-3 years is doing very well indeed). Great job! I’m trying to find time to post highlights of my Peacock, Orion, a 3.5” male I got a few weeks ago.

Very informative video mate thank you, helps me figure out how to get to were you are in keeping the mantis shrimp. No idea why you haven’t spoken before your a natural narrator really enjoyed it! Especially the bit were you described his home as overkill, but went on to explain that this gave him options so he could choose what entrances to use and that they must be dark 👍👍👍

your channel convinced me to get one what a pleasure Tim has become, I have him in a 190 litre corner tank with a hugepiece of marble with various holes and tunnels drilled in it, I saved him from a pet shop where he was in a tiny tank and as soon as he was home it was obvious he was soooo much happier. I too have other fiish in the tank (a large green chromis and a large yellow tail damsel) they all get along perfectly - usualy the chromis sleeps with Tim I have lots of small loose pieces of reef rock (his garden) which I believe stops him being bored - I agree they are painted black and not much info available on the net, don't believe everything you read I'm going to try some corals too because why not ? Thank you for your uploads of Bruce he is a blooming star and they are very informative and show a different side than the norm which is sadly lacking on youtube

Thank you so much for your content! I just fell in love with mantis shrimp and only having had freshwater tanks so far i am looking for as much decent information as i can possibly find! I really like the way you approach things with Bruce and he looks superhealthy and great. It seems very obvious to me that you are actually interested in his needs and preferences - opposite to many other videos I found on yt....in which people only seem to care about how they can see and enjoy these animals the most. I would love to collect as much info as needed to built a species-appropiate tank for a mantis shrimp myself, soon. Oh and btw: Love your voice !! You should always talk in your videos ;-) Lots of thanks from Germany. I will keep watching and commenting. Sam

Marine pure is just there to help bacteria to build up to deal with nitrates/phosphate. You can do this with other products or run a refugium with algae growing in it to do the same thing.

Is it possible to have 2 of them of opposite gender and hope they breed? If so what would be the best way to go about it?
@KungFuShrimp
@KungFuShrimp 2 жыл бұрын
It's not something I've heard of anyone trying. From my research there is the potential for a mated pair as they do often mate with the same partner for life however I have no idea if they would fight if confined in the same tank. The chance of raising the offspring would also be low as their initial stage is planktonic. I hope this helps.

when I got mine (about 6 months ago now) from a pet shop it had escaped and been attacked at some point by the owners dog - I was afraid he was going to be very timid so to allow tine to adjust I left the aquarium lights off for a coule of weeks, I fed at the same time every day and sat a coupe of feet away from the tank watching so he could get used to my presence without too much stress this seemed to work for me and now he comes out to 'play' frequently through the day, I have lights but they are on a timer and a dimmer so not illuminated all the time and not so bright to make him want to hide away

Hey do Mantis Shrimp act weird under any particular spectrum of light? I ask cause I'm working on a lovecraftian horror story based off the Color Out of Space, and I'm thinking these shrimp with their super eyes might play a particular role in some way. Perhaps a Marine Biologist's pet shrimps acting out of sorts all of the sudden and able to be used in some manner for detection of the color or it's corruption or, something... Eh I'm still workshopping the idea
@KungFuShrimp
@KungFuShrimp 2 жыл бұрын
Mantis shrimp can certainly see spectrums of light we can't and use polarised light to signal each other. As far as a weird reaction the oddest behaviour I've seen is Bruce swimming to the top of his tank and poking his eyes above the surface to have a look around (there's a video of it on my channel). Love a bit of Lovecraft myself and there is definitely something a bit eldritch about mantis shrimp. Hope that helps

@@KungFuShrimp If you haven't read it already, you might like to try Warren Fahy's book Fragment. It's not lovecraftian persay, but there is an island full of uniquely adapted and INCREDIBLY dangerous lifeforms people stumble upon, an island where life took a very different turn. Very well written, and a plethora of good science without being too overwhelming.
