Interesting. I have a compustar remote start on my 2007 5spd Camry. I do not have to push the remote start button to put in reservation mode. Just simply stop, neautral, ebrake, and not press any pedals while shutting off key. It stays running as that vehicle did and shuts down once door is closed. I like it. It’s not complicated at all. I follow those steps even without using the remote start. Good video for those who don’t know.

All it really needs is an actuator to push the shifter into neutral, and another to raise the parking brake if its not set before shifting to neutral. I haven't seen it done, but I plan to do that soon.

This isn't a very complex system, you guys. Stop the truck, set the parking brake, press a button, then get out of the car like you normally do. One extra step. (Remote start the truck) unlock it, get it, put the key in. You're done. No extra steps.

Thanks for the video, it explained a lot. Reservation mode activation seems like a hassle especially if you tend to let others drive the car and use this feature -- it takes time to explain to each person how to do it right. I would think a sensor on the shift linkage at the shifter location that can tell when the shifter is located in the neutral position would be the best way to do it. That way you never have to deal with reservation mode. A little more hassle during install but it's an idea.

Unfortunately there's no fail safe if that gear sensor fails. Could lead to a hefty lawsuit. Having to set reservation mode ensures it could never be in gear.

As a sail safe I can see where reservation mode is great however the inability to let anyone go get something from my car while it was in reservation mode would actually kill it seems like two steps back in the world of alarms you could say due to safety. Years ago I had an alarm which had remote start and what the system checked is that the car had to be in neutral AND the emergency break engaged if either and or both were not in their right place the car just wouldn't start at all.

Dang 10 years ago... anything different in 23? I'm about to have the Ds4 Remote start and security by viper installed tomorrow. I've seen some videos say you need to hold the clutch, then initiate e brake... and some say brake, then e brake. My car has the far left e brake pedal, so I guess depends which sequence it needs huh.

What about just using the transmission's neutral switch in correlation with the park brake? Wouldn't that be safer and easier than performing a ritual each time you exit the car? Just food for thought, what if your window was down (like in the video) and some nasty bloke came along and just for grins, reached in, then put the car in gear? Then what?

Many cars doesn't have any electronics that senses if the car is in gear or not. Except for some of those high tech cars like BMW, Audi and stuff. I'm thinking the same about the windows. That's why I'm planning to install a microwave sensor, so that if it detects anyone in the car it will set the alarm which kills reservation mode.

Henrik Nilsen Don't know how this would work with a BMW. Mine makes me have the clutch down to the floor before it will allow me to start.

Jeremy Powers These can be overridden. You have to connect a relay to the clutch switch. Then the relay is triggered by the "ground when running" or a starter output on the remote starter. This should trick the car to think that the clutch is in and let the remote starter work.

+Jeremy Powers Exactly my situation as well.... I have a 2013 Mini Cooper 'S' w/ 6 speed stick, and clutch has to be depressed to start the vehicle..... :(

big time this. reservation mode is utterly unnecessary. you can put a magnetic sensor on the gear shift to sense if the car is in neutral, and a sensor on the parking brake. if both are active, the car starts. if either one is inactive, the car doesn't start. it's that easy and it's almost foolproof.

SO What happens if you need to unlock the vehicle before attempting to perform the remote start? Will it then be disabled due to the fact that transmission may have been accidentally placed in gear while the doors were open?

My 05 Dakota has a neutral switch built in. I know this because the chime goes off if I'm parked in neutral and put it into any gear (including R) with the parking brake on. It shouldn't be too difficult to make a system tap into that switch to see if any of them are active when the remote starter is activated.

What if you remote started your car but didn't get in and it shuts off. Would you have to put the remote starter in reservation mode to remote start the car again

This was many year ago. There must be a better way now to do this so one could use the stock key fob.

This is for manual transmissions. So you are relying on just the parking brake anyway. There's no park.

Is there any add-on remote starter for a manual transmission? I want to add one to my turbocharged 2006 Mazda Mazdaspeed6 and use my current fob key; which I have seen add-on remote starters use a 3x button press on lock button to start the car. I do not want extra remotes. I have seen it in automatic transmissions and was wondering if there is such thing for manuals. I want something simpler and not as complicated as this. Any help/tips? Thanks.

I'm a bit confused. All this does is tap into the starter motor of the car, So why is it so difficult in a manual? You say if you put it into neutral you HAVE to press the button for 2 seconds or it'll "Drive away as you get out of the car". That's impossible though...It's not like it can magically tap into the gearbox and put it into gear let alone drive away...

with that method you have to set it into reservation mode everytime u plan using the remote start. For example you pull in your driveway for the night and arent leaving till morning, you'd follow steps to put car into Reservation mode so the remote starter will work. If you dont set it the button for remote starting wont work. They do that so if the keys are in your pocket and u hit remote start by mistake and u have the car in gear it wont buck and crash into something in front of you. Its a pain in the ass yes but Id rather take 2 seconds to set the remote start when I know im gonna be using it for the morning or night whenever u need to use it you set it before u get out takes 3 seconds literally. Granted it sux when I run to geab something outta the car amd forget to reset it but its hella cheaper than buying a new car to get a remote start. Personally me I dnt use that feature and Ive been lucky I rigged it another way I saw online with Security System type magnet sensors that they use on doors and windows setup on the shifter and fastened with glue and solder. It makes it so the Remote Start wont engage if the sensor reas the magnet which means the cars left in gear. Not 100% flawless but worked for me for past 2 years tho Ive heard of it going bad for some people too, all depends on how mechanically enclined you are cause a shop I dnt think can put them in anymore legally without that sensor/safety system being put in also but it may be different state to state. Just be careful amd if u feel you wont remember or its too much then getba automatic transmission on your next car cause thats the jn my other answer lol.

In my city (North Eastern Ontario), shops charge 475 for a remote start unit. Should be 500$ installed. It's only one extra device in the setup, and a brief sequence from you to do this. There's no way that's worth hundreds more. Shit, the part is only worth 50$ they need to add.

So yo u need to dick around with it, screw that, hook it up to the E-brake and rig up a neutral switch for it, it looks more inconvenient going through all those steps than going outside and starting your car

Couldn't you just have it tied to the parking brake light to make sure it's set? So if the parking brake is not engaged the remote start won't work? I realize this doesn't fix the in neutral issue but it would be simpler. Then you just set the parking brake and leave in neutral. I'd use that, the whole ritual to get out of the car each time won't work.

It’s such a great concept but the idea of this ritual you have to go through EVERY TIME is so inconvenient that it’s not worth it. Im genuinely surprised that someone would trade the convenience of a remote start for the in-convenience of such an unnatural process to even engage the system. Surely there is another way to sense whether the vehicle is in gear even if it is a slightly pricer mod. Every vehicle in the world can tell you when it is in reverse, manual or not. Surely all that’s needed is another sensor that would simply indicate that the vehicle is not in neutrals

So basically, it works like this.. Press remote start button, make sure it is in neutral, activate ebrake, take keys out while vehicle is running, take keys out, exit vehicle, close door, engine shuts off, have your friend who never exited the car put it back into gear, make sure you observe the kids in front of the vehicle, have your buddy remote start it, and you get 10 points for each kid you kill..., sounds like if you really wanted to go to jail, just rob a bank.

siggs2010 Your idea is flawed. It cannot start in any gear. There is a sensor at the bottom of the gear selector that only creates a closed circuit when in neutral. And most cars must have the clutch pressed to put in gear otherwise there's a wall until you press the clutch pedal.
