I've had quite a bit of success transplanting weeds in my yard. If you have a plant that's blown in and taken root, but is in the wrong place (like on a path, that you want to keep trimmed) dig it up and move it to a place that makes more sense. Just make note of the conditions that it was thriving in (sunny spot, acidic soil under the fir tree, etc.) and move it to someplace similar. Most native plants transplant well, and carry on as if not much happened. In this way, I've groomed my yard into a low-maintenance, self-organizing ecosystem.

My dad's large lot was adjacent to a golf course in the midwest, it had been around since the mid-1800's so that was the tool he issued me to cut weeds in his lawn. I don't have turf in our NC lawn because he was a lawn fanatic and I prefer ground covers or other options in our bird and pollinator habitat.

Another use for a grass whip is cleaning out gutters. If you have a heavy layer of compacted debris in your gutter and its taking to long to clean them by hand. Because sometimes when cleaning gutters, you're only able to get just a handful out at a time. Take a grass whip like the one in the video, turn it over, line the blade up with the inside of the gutter, start the tip of the blade under the debris and just pull back, lift up a little, and twist the handle to lift the layer of packed debris up and out of the gutter. After you're done, you will have 4-5 feet long lengths of debris instead of just small handfuls laying on the ground to pick up.

I might just try that next time I have to clean the gutters, what a great idea, thanks!

had these for generations in Africa - slightly greater angle on it so you can work further away from your body. There it's called a 'slasher.'

You can sharpen these but be careful you can also ruin them. I had one that was in my family for 40 years and it worked like a charm until the metal fatigue got too much for it. Make sure you get one that has a solid shaft not tubular steel it will bend. I have all the noisy gear but it's nice to go out and use this and not disturb others.

Great insight. A flat shaft would definitely withstand stronger lateral forces, thats good thinkin.

They dont do great near objects because they can damage your fence/pole, or leave some grass behind. But it will work if you are careful.

Thank you for this video! A kind old neighbor, no longer with us, gave me one of these long ago but I never used it. I now have more garden than grass, not worth getting the old stinky mower out for, and I too don't want something requiring gas, cords, or ridiculous cost. But the little I have needs to be trimmed down some way, so I'm definitely getting this out and giving it a try. Just one question: does it need occasional sharpening at all? Using a small round or curved file perhaps? Or is it just the strength of the swing that matters most. Thanks again!

Can you use it to trim around areas (like near a fence or around rocks)? Just curious. Would like to have a weed wacker tool that isn't electric or gas.
@GiveitaGrow

Not really, unless you want to risk scratching your rocks/fence. This is good for trail edges and open areas mostly.
