Chaal Rhythm (4 Basic Variations) [Simply Dhol

In this lesson, we cover four variations of the Chaal Rhythm - labelled one through four for us to be able to reference back to them at a later time.

Great video! Not trying to be negative here but when I learnt Dhol I was told that we play in accordance of 8 'notes' per beats. And between each note there is an equal space. So the biggest issue I'm having is hand speed especially on the treble side. Faster tempos seem to screw me up. I think a lot of it might be contributed to how I'm holding the tili. Any tips?

The key is to practice slow and really master what you are trying to play. Once you're comfortable, start increasing the speed. If you find that you keep messing up at a certain speed, stay there until you perfect what you're attempting to do. With regards to holding the tilli, the key is to find the balance point, that is, the point that bounces freely on the drum. If you hold the stick too far towards the middle, it wont bounce and if you hold it too far back (towards the end), it will die after the strike. Hope that helps!

Random question but is there a big difference in the sound quality of dhols made by sheesham and those made by mango wood? Which one is the most common also? Thanks in advance

Hi Yusuke Okina, in my opinion, there is a difference in the sound that is produced by various woods because of the densities of the woods. Both are very common, but Mango (amb) is considered inferior because it is less hard. Sheeshan (tahli) is therefore the preferred choice. Lighter sheesham dhols are referred to as white sheesham or chitti tahli, while those that contain a higher percentage of the dark wood are referred to as kaali tahli or dark sheesham

Nice. I'm curious your thoughts about where the numbering comes from. Is it just whatever we want to label? Back in the early 2000s when I was looking at this stuff, it seemed to me that these different variations were "attached" to specific actions in a a bhangra routine. While it's true that on one hand we can mix up the variations however we want, it also seemed like there was some rough consistency as to when a bhangra dholi would play one or the other variation (bracketed between tora-s) for a specific stage action. I'm also curious about your sense of "chaal 4" which, as you say, is the "bhangra" pattern. I'm not sure I've ever heard it played slow (lets say, "at chaal speed") during a bhangra presentation. (I do realize this isn't all about accompanying bhangra! Just an observation!) I think the slow version definitely works well for accompanying songs...

At the end of the session do you "un-tense" the bass side or do you just keep the dhol with the bass side tensed all the time. I'm unsure if we have to tense and untense the bass side between playing sessions?
