Fallout: New Vegas - Survival Mode - Part 3 - In Ruins

Fallout: New Vegas Survival Mode continues, as we finish up our business at Primm, and head out into the wider world... before immediately getting stuck into the noble art of looting the ruins.
Fallout: New Vegas returns with Survival Mode, as we undertake a journey I've always wanted to make, playing through the JSawyer Mod, and experiencing the version of New Vegas closest to how Josh Sawyer wanted it to be. We'll also get to experience a Survival Mode vastly harder than New Vegas' basic Hardcore Mode, as well as dipping our toe into the world of mods...

Here, I'll expain deathclaws for you: A deathclaw is normally nearly blind regardless and hunt through sonar and smell. a completely blind deathclaw however is even better at the things other deathclaws are normally good at. Also, for giggles here, Stealth Boys in use are supposed to make a smell of Ozone and thus, lore wise you'd be better off without the stealth boy, game wise, it wouldn't make a difference.

Jon, I figured out that when you go to Nipton and walk toward Vulpes Inculta, he runs a bit of a distance to talk to you. But he's actually willing to follow you to the ends of the earth, so if you do a bit of platforming to get to a roof and get some distance between you two, you can make him follow you all the way to the Mojave Outpost, where he will be easily killed. Then, you can talk his shit with no consequence. Also, the rest of the legionaries in Nipton will stay there forever, which makes it easier to silently kill them all.

You can also skip straight on through to Novac if you take the back way out of Hidden Valley, and there is a path up the hills North of Goodsprings that if you are careful lets you skirt the cazadores and get to the Great Khans territory. From there you can go straight on to the strip if you skirt between the raiders.

Jon seems to underestimate barter... Barter gives good carry weight related perks and it maximizes your cap gain from trading things, I always maximize my barter or leave it so I can turn it up with gear.

Meh, first you have to activate the dropbox in each destination and it's only useful for moving more than you can carry. Maybe he didn't need that much space. But Jon could and probably should have used his normal leather armor to repair his reinforced leather armor. His reinforced leather armor isn't top condition yet so I think it would be better to use the armor for something than dropping it right there.

Not sure if you know this since you keep mentioning it, but the reason your damage and damage threshold don't go any higher is because of the repair line in the condition bar. I think all armor has max DT at 50% and higher, and all weapons have max DAM at 75% and higher. Beyond that, you're just maintaining it to make sure it doesn't drop below the line, it won't increase the DT or DAM any more.

Friendly Player I had New Vegas for about 7 or 8 years. And I just am getting the hang of Caravan.... Always thought it was kinda worthless. cause everyone I played against. (a whole 2 people. :P ) had almost no caps. and I would always lose.. My newest playthrough. You should definitely go more legion than you normally do just to see the new content. You said one of the big reasons for this mod was that they snubbed some factions, particularly the Legion, in the original game, implying that this game has more Legion quests.

It's still a fun, challenging way to play the game, despite the fact that JSawyer is just for rebalancing the game. Dead Money and Lonesome Road are a little tougher than usual.

Has anyone ever got in to Diamond City in Fallout 4 without talking to Piper? I just started Survival mode on PS4 and went to Diamond City early on, for whatever reason Super Mutants were attacking the main gate. Which opened and guards came out, so I just ran right in and skipped the whole dialogue. The game just assumes you did it all, tells you to go talk to Piper even though you have no idea who she is, quite funny. Never had that happen before. I essentially infiltrated Diamond City without permission and everyone is okay with it, awesome. Also at level 5 or something that was extremely scary with the Mutants after such a long journey...

I'm rewatching the New Vegas You Only Live Once run, and stopping that to watch this video...the graphical quality is a revelation. Now I have a laundry list of mods for the next time I play New Vegas. There's something else up in those same hills that I've only been able to find once - a hidden cave. I've got about 5 or 6 runs of New Vegas and I only found it my first time, when I was hillclimbing like an idiot looking for passes through all the hills. I've never taken the map locations perk, and I've never found it again. If I remember correctly, it was surrounded by Centaurs and had at least one bed, some armor and a couple magazines or skill books inside. Someday I'll find it again.

Fun as always, Jon; I'd never seen that Railyard! I've got two suggestions for upcoming mods that are themed around armour. 1. Since the NCR tend to look alike a lot because of their basic outfits, try the NCR Trooper Overhaul, which really adds diversity to the uniforms and jobs of NCR troops. Seems like a good one since you've been heading into NCR areas. www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/52721 2. You mentioned you didn't like the free armour and weapons DLC you get at the beginning of the game because it's too easy. So I want to recommend a fun way to EARN some new stuff: The Courier's Stash. You get new weapons RECIPES (so you even have to craft the new stuff!) and armour, but only after doing a new quest line by the modders. This team really worked hard by adding a few new NPC's and voicing them. It starts in Primm, so consider it :) www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/49531/?

If I had to guess why the blind Deathclaws are more perceptive, it'd be that they need to focus on the other senses and use them heavily. That's why they're so perceptive, they need to use lots of hearing and smelling to make up for their lost sense.

It makes sense that blind Death Claws are more perceptive than regular ones. Blindness fortifies the other remaining senses, and since they are blind it does not matter if you are hidden or invisible. They can smell you easier, hear you easier and maybe sense the vibrations of your footsteps or something like that, so they can detect you even if you are using a Stealth Boy.

Another potentially easier shortcut is Scorpion gulch near the hidden valley. If you manage to deal with the giant rad scorpions, it leaves you at helios, just nort of novac.

That's funny, just today I discovered primm pass. I'm doing an unarmed no weapons run and I was looking for a safer way of getting to novac, accidentally found it. I was paying half attention to the game when the deathclaw lunged at me. My heart jumped into my throat it scared me so bad. That didn't discourage me from trying to get through though. I saw some of the mountain was sticking out on the right, so I skyrimed on the edge of it until the deathclaw was out of sight, and from there I was in the clear, until some grenade launcher bandits spotted me. Conveniently enough, some NCR and legion guys were fighting on the road ahead. lead the bandits to them and they all killed each other. The only guy left was one legion member with one bar of hp. I neutralized the potential threat with a swift chop to the spine after a quick ocular pat down. Got a lot of good loot from those guys. The rest of the run has been really boring and I'm going to quit. Started off too strong with primm pass, and now selling boomer combat armor is too tedious

Also if you prefer the wooden textures for the service rifle you can grab this alternate texture made by the same guy who made the Weapon Retexture Project mod. www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/36990/? click yes for overwriting. Also this mod lets remove and re-attach you weapon mods whenever you want www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/44515/? make sure you look at the requirements. And this mod is my favorite www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/38844/? it change your pip-boy, but the best part is that you no longer have the ugly, bulky pip-boy model on your arm. this makes a lot of armors like power armor and stuff look much better. I would also recommend fiddling with fov commands, if you want to try real quick to see want i am talking about, open the console with ~ and type 'fov 90' (without quotes) and see what difference that makes.

That mod is great when you're sitting down as it doesn't go third person. If you combine it with the Helpless Falling mod it can be pretty cool, this mod isn't intrusive, it just makes sense
