@@berenhamilton3321 yeah and there's a good reason for it too. He's already done this kind of series for NV when he played through the JSawyer Director's Cut mod. It was the exact same format where he covers all the intricate little things about the game along with what was restored/added by the mod. Jon doesn't like to retread water so NV will just be spin off episode like you said. I think it's a series most people don't know about or have forgotten because I keep seeing this sentiment as if he hasn't already done this for NV.

Ive found that, as Jon says while exploring vault 106, that a lot of Fallout 3 makes so much more sense if you mentally set it happening about 20 or so years after the bombs fell, instead of the 200 that Bethesda eventually did. The super high rad areas that would have decayed to near non-existence after 200 years would still be insanely hot at 20 years. Places like the white house or the normal entrance to vault 87. (Edit: Rad decay based on the relative safety of the most contaminated location in our world, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster site. The current rads around the elephants foot, while certainly very high, are not instantly lethal like they were mere years after the accident. And we are what, less than 50 years since then?) The idea that getting clean water to the wastes is such a huge deal makes way more sense if the game is set within a couple decades after the war, instead of a couple centuries. Heck, you can even explain the BoS more easily too, since the time required to walk across the US, from lost hills CA to Washington DC is about 1 year, assuming about 8 hrs/day walking, and some of the slight diversions that would have to be made. After all, sending a contingent to the Military HQ of the USA makes more sense within the first few years post war, instead of, again, 190-200 years. Plus, young Maxon is canonically what, 9 or 10 at this point? I’m just saying, looking at the major plot points and plot locations, it makes way more sense for the game to have been planned to be at 20-ish years post bombs, than 200. To the point that I suspect the 200 year thing was, while maybe not an 11th hour change, at best a 10th hour change.

I always thought that it wasn't a violent uprising in vault 106 that killed the people inside of it. They just did what the terminals said and sit there in ecstasy and die while drugged up. Probably with no one able to turn the gas off they just starved to death with just a few of them turning mad.

Okay, the bits with the broken terminals in Vault 106 were pretty brilliant -- I love how you can argue with yourself against the gas's influence through them. As for the survivors -- since they have raider haircuts, I'm going to say that they're raiders who got in somehow, and their reaction to the gas involved them starting to believe they were vault residents. Good enough timeline patching for you? :p

I'm kinda mad Bethesda changed the chronology of Fallout 3. If the game took place must closer to the bombs dropping, so many plot holes would be fixed. The Enclave wouldn't have already been destroyed in Fallout 2; Little Lamplight would make slightly more sense; the undisturbed nature of all the pre-war buildings would make sense, etc. As it stands, 200 years is a bonkers amount of time for the little development that Fallout 3's societies have seen.

That is certainly true for The Master's strain of FEV, but in both the Vault 87 strain (at the start) and the West Virginia strain, they were primarily infecting pure-strain, pre-war people. No radiation, or minimal at least. West Virgina has no higher intelligent Super Mutants, and the Capitol Wasteland has two.

I have a theory about Vault 106. The reason the original residents are still there is because they aren't the hostile ones, you are as the player. These survivors would be attacking each other if the gas affected them, but they aren't. These dwellers must be immune, and you perceiving them as red dots is a side effect of the gas. You know you are suffering from the gas because of the hallucinations.

3:15 That's my favorite aspect of fallout 3. The game shows you the consequences of your actions in game instead of an ending slide show like the other games. It makes everything feel a lot more real. If you convince them to open the vault without destroying it you can encounter Susie Mack in the wasteland and she will tell you everything is great and give the player purified water. If you destroyed the vault you can find her corpse or those of other vault dwellers in a random event instead.

Boooooo, they nerfed the Vault 87 entrance radiation! That was the cool thing about it, that it was very difficult to even make it there. I don't think you can survive long enough to leave the high radiation area, unless you are literally swimming in Radaway and keep mashing the hotkey button like it was a Mario Party minigame to try to offset the insane radiation gains. Seeing Jon just chilling there after a single dose of Rad-X felt super wrong.

there's an easy explanation for why the FO1+2 mutants are more consistent - they were fully dipped in the fev, fev that had the master's people actively trying to maintain high results. If I remember right, there are a few terminals in 1 that basically say any other form of exposure is both inconsistent and much more likely to warp the subject's mind (thus why they needed people from vaults - no pre-exposure to FEV, so better results). On top of that, if I remember right the master had a certain expectation of quality, and had no problem eliminating unacceptable results, ie there were less dumb dumbs cause they had no problem culling the results. There were some pretty dumb super mutants, sure, but the ones not even capable of understanding basic orders were considered worthless rejects.
@seprithlicastia463

I think the reason the vault 106 experiment went off the rails is that the delivery pipes were leaky (you see the gas coming out of pipes that have no vents) so a much bigger section of the population than intended got gassed. Vault 106 also reminds me of the Pax from the Firefly movie Serenity, where it made most people content, non-aggressive, and lethargic. but a few people had the opposite effect, becoming canibalstic hyperaggressive murder hobos.

Isn't it part of fallout 1 that the master is looking for Vaults because unirradiated humans are the ones who become smart mutants? Or at least do so in greater numbers?

It is, yes. And the Master's strain of FEV supports his hypothesis. But the Vault 87 and West Virginia strains initial batch of victims were as pure-stain as you can get -- all pre-war. Yet those stains seem to produce even stupider Super Mutants than the Master's worst standard grunt.

43:55 Fun fact: there's a region right inside that last doorway where there are no rads. Notice your rad growth disappeared for a second as you walked through. It's a neat place to stand while the GECK containment structure opens, leaving you completely safe from radiation. I believe it saw some use in Fallout 3 speedruns at one point, though it's been a while since I checked so current routes might not need it.

For anyone wondering, in the original Fallout 3 outside of TTW, the radiation actually is a ton worse. On one playthrough of mine I made it a point to discover all locations, including Vault 87. I prepped for that with a radiation suit and 100+ radaway from trading tech for radaway from that guy in the Outcasts at Fort Independence, and some rad-x. Even then, I was getting 100-200 rads/sec, and the max before death is 1,000 rads. Fun times.

you know that moment w the enclave being right outside of vault 106 is an example of how I think random encounters actually elevate the storytelling of the game? Because like Jon said, maybe the enclave don't realize they're right next to 106, which is an ironic bit of storytelling in its own right-or maybe they caught amata here because they just left vault 106, while amata was headed there hoping the vault would still be functional and take her in. obviously none of this is technically canon, but it's still fun to think about (and *technically* none of it isn't canon either, I mean, it's in the game). To that end, actually, some of the places I've found Meridia's beacon in Skyrim actually lead to some crazy lore theories, like one time it was in the final treasure chest of some vampires, so like it kinda makes sense why *they* would have it what with their aversion to light and such, and another time in some chest I think in one of the other daedric realms? so it was like the other daedra lord or their minions stole it, hinting at some conflict between them (I really don't remember which, it might've even been cc content but still). I think one time it was literally in a spider egg sac, like.... did a frostbite spider "lay" Meridia's beacon like an egg 0.o? tldr radiant/random encounters and item locations *can be* really cool sometimes and lead to fun and fresh stories in the background of the world

31:27 - the 2nd person on the list (Jason Stevens) is the child of the father who eventually broke down and "created" Lamplight. So the 2nd person they experimented on was a child. At 25:48, I also find the line "Now all this work seems pointless" to be telling. What work is he referring to? My guess is the father was an experimental scientist who ended up killing his son. First, his mental breakdown makes more sense if he has a guilty conscience. Second, "this work" probably refers to Vault Tech's experiment. Third, he went to a doctor with an issue and actually got medical help instead of becoming the next experimental victim; surely this treatment is only reserved for important people.

If you let Amata take over the vault, you can actually find here asking for help with the Enclave in sexy sleepwear. Saving her just have have her saying "Don't talk to me" I'm guessing when they were having their mini Civil War, they damaged critical systems. Amata wanted to help the vault, saw the notes about the Enclave and somewhere she decided that dressing up in a sexual manner to ensure she would get the help.

FEV affects people differently depending on their initial level of radiation. That's why The Master is looking for vaults. He wants to make smart, functional mutants from relatively clean human stock. The super mutants in the capital wasteland are grabbing wastelanders and expose them to FEV. Far be it from me to defend Beth lore, but this one they've got down.

I don't know the survors can't possibly be raiders because they would need a working pipboy to open the vault to get in so either in Fallout 3 you don't need really a pipboy to open the vault or somehow raiders came across a vault dweller and took the pipboy from them both possibilities being rather unlikely to be a thing.

The real kick is that, in Fallout 3, Pip-Boys are medically attached to a persons arm and cannot be transferred. But we can kind Raider armor in the chest in Vault 106, so the theory just keeps bouncing around.

He hopes in Fallout 5, we go do back to a world where the compass only has tick marks on it. In some of his other videos Jon mentioned disliking the compass in fallout 4, which had icons indicating what type of location was ahead of you. Fallout 3/NV just has a tick mark when you're near a named location, you have to actually go there to figure out what it is. It makes the game much more interesting to explore, guiding players towards interesting locations without spoiling the discovery.

Finding out that Fallout 3 was at one point intended to take place at roughly the same time as Fallout 1, or even earlier, makes so much sense. Shame they didn't go with that - that would have improved a loooooot of the worldbuilding weirdness of F3 and F4.

I cannot agree with that, at least when looking at the final product. Beyond Jet making even less sense, the Brotherhood (as they are written) already being in D.C. makes no sense and the Enclave should be at the Oil Rig, not attempting to play power politics in D.C..
@alexanderhammil6754

@@seprithlicastia463 Yes, there'd definitely be some stuff that would need to be reworked or removed, but personally all of the connections to the west coast games didn't add much. like, the east coast brotherhood is so different than the west coast version that you might as well call them something else; the us military was spread throughout the country, so it's entirely reasonable that multiple pockets of survivors exist and form their own communities. the enclave likewise: having multiple competing "presidents" in the aftermath of total societal collapse doesn't cause as many conflicts as trying to maintaing the continuity with the earlier games does.

Another piece of evidence that Vault 87 wasn't "supposed" to be overrun by mutants - Vault-Tec bothered to issue them a G.E.C.K., which wouldn't make sense if they expected the Vault to fail. It's very plausible Vault-Tec genuinely thought Vault 87 was going to work and produce useful scientific data they could harvest later regarding a super soldier program.

Ok Jon just a quick explanation, there are 2 types of GECKS, the fallout 2 type 1GECK is just the box of seeds, advice, soil samples, and a cold fusion reactor. The type 2 GECK in fallout 3 is the magical matter transmutator that makes a green paradise. Imo the GECKS are symbolic of the game design philosophies of Bethesda and interplay/Obsidian, one simply provides the tools needed and just lets you go wild, while the other one kinda dumbs things down a lot and though it removes a good chunk of frustration, it isn't as thought out in some areas.
