THE “tramp, tramp, tramp” of 60 pairs of brand new army issue boots and the mana of the predominantly young men wearing them echoed across 100 years in Gisborne on Saturday during the opening of C Company House. A crowd of 3000-4000 attended the ceremony in Kelvin Park and many more watched the parade that preceded the opening.

The 60’, representing the first 60 Maori from Tairawhiti to march off to World War 1 and magnificently kitted out in period uniform, led the 500-metre-long precession. They were followed by 30 men from the first battalion RNIR at Linton, military vehicles, cadets, school students and several hundred 28 Maori Battalion whanau carrying photographs of their loved ones.

Mikmaq First Nations here from the Mikmaq tribe in Gesgapegiag Quebec. You lads are so important to the cultural warrior societies within the communities. The fact the our colonisers saw your culture as something to be apart of is such a huge step. I love ya guys. Much love coming from the Mikmaq communities in Canada. Gesalul (Love.)

Ummmm, you mean Mi'kmaq? Pronounced mig maw? Lol . Not to be that guy, but it seems that there a lot of people in Canada who claim to be indigenous, but are only so because they were born here ,rather than elsewhere.

@@ntcarib sadly a lot of those brave men and women whom the country called upon to help them out, were left by the way side when the country no longer needed them. In most cases it was not until ten or twenty years ,even longer, after their deaths that some of those brave "wind talkers" also known as "code talkers" got any form of recognition. A lot of the pressure came from the church to not publically decorate or even award them , in the fears that : * These are their words, not mine* " that it might spark an Indian rebellion , or even raise sympathies towards these people whom refuse to accept our Lord and Savior ...." It's a sad reality.

This brings tears to my eyes. My mother lost brothers who fought for the 28th Maori Battalion. The casualty rate for men of "Te Hokowhitu" was 75 %. That meant 3 out 4 men would be wounded or killed in combat. 4 of my uncles went to fight against Hitler's finest, and only 1 returned. 2 killed defending Crete, and 1 MIA in the second battle of Tobruk. The eldest brother was 21 years of age. A testament to how we Maori lost the cream of a generation of young vibrant men. Nothing good comes from war and conflict. You would think that ppl might have learned that by now huh? Sadly, not so.
