I agree.... the decision to air layer at that spot will create a lovely bonsai. I hope we will see the results in a future video. But I did get a little confused with the advice to not scrape the cambium. As in a past video, about a year ago, Peter advises to scrape the cambium . Bonsai Shortcut-Air Layering. Please clarify. Does it make a difference on the size of the tree ?
@MTPatriot17873 жыл бұрын
I was looking for this question as well. When I heard Peter say this I had to pause and go the comments. I have always scraped the cambium with my air layers and have had moderate success for being a rookie.

How about using an old ketchup squirt bottle, they sell empty ones, and put your powder in their. Then after wetting the scored bark, you can then shoot the powder on to the scored area from the bottle. Might be an easier way of doing it.

I was of the understanding the cambium needed to be removed for successful air layering so you leave the cambium on Peter?

You have to strike a balance because if you remove all the cambium the air layer wont take. Just take a bit off.

Turned out very nice, future updates on this tree will be interesting. I'm a little confused about the airlayering technique: I've been told to remove the cambium completely to avoid the tree healing. It seems to work for me but then again, I've never airlayered a maple. Maybe different species need different methods?
@w.mikolayenko85473 жыл бұрын
I’m 11minutes in and all I see is that one long shoot he mentioned at the start being the new leader and air layering above, for a desktop sized top and dramatic garden sized base, sweeping towards my right shoulder (short term). Actually cringed when Peter trimmed it. 🙂
This air layering is slightly different to the other videos Peter has done. In the other videos he scraped the white of the trunk heavily with a knife to remove the layer under the bark, Not sure why he didn't do it on this, is it because the tree is so large?
@7rocedural6en713 жыл бұрын
Why would they stop exporting moss? Everyone relies on it for hanging baskets, orchids, etc. It's pretty cheap here in Canada too. I'll have to look into this..

Pls Help Peter or anyone . After attempting air layer on several trees ( ficus and 2 maples ) I have had no success . The areas got green with algae and never produces roots . I have done it exactly as Peter shows with root hormone plastic bag, sphagnum etc . Hi Peter, any recommendation what spaghnum moss to use for air layerings when the one from New Zealand is not available anymore (which seems to be the case already according to shops)? Moss from Chile and China seems to be not as good...
@stuartbaines28433 жыл бұрын
Alex- i have made airlayers without Sphagnum moss, which is not sustainable As a medium in the same way peat is so damaging Environmentally.
@Alex-iw2ok3 жыл бұрын
@@stuartbaines2843 hey stuart. while digging up peat moss is indeed not sustainable (peat moss is aging plant material over many years) spaghnum moss is living material which can be artificially horticultured and farmed in a sustainable manner. E.g. checkout this company in new zealand: besgrow.com/about-us/ Spaghnum moss has excellent attributes for air layerings which are not given with other media/soils (e.g. antifungal effects and massive water holding capacity).
@peterchan31003 жыл бұрын
You can use any kind of stringy moss. I sometimes use the moss I rake off the lawn. Its just that the NZ moss is sold in large quantities by our horticultural supplier. Some moss also comes from China but there are also some suppliers in the UK.

While I understand your point I tend to disagree. For me, just training the trees, playing around with different species is very interesting and even therapeutic. As long as you enjoy the process of training the trees, nothing is lost. Perhaps the people who are still here when we are gone will continue working on the trees. Or perhaps not. Either way, doing what you like has its own rewards.
