As a mother, Mapleshade was abandoned by her mate Appledusk after losing her kits, which was the last straw that pushed her into the abyss.
When I found this song I thought it would be a perfect fit for Mapleshade, so I decided to start drawing it right away, I hope you guys like it!

The song fits perfectly as it’s meant to be sung for kids but it has an added eerie-ness to it. Then, the scenes and the timing of certain events works out really well to tell Mapleshade’s story. I also find it very creepy that towards the end when Mapleshade is singing (I think) to Ravenwing, Frecklewish, and Appledusk like how she was singing to her kits in the beginning. It has a parallel symbolism I think idk, but anyways, Phenomenal work as always!

I love this! It’s so eerie and captures Mapleshade well! I love that at the end she’s singing to the dead bodies of her victims as if they were her kits, amazing detail there because she killed those three cats to avenge her kits’s deaths! Keep up the amazing work!!

Be real; she would have zero sympathy for Appledusk if the roles were switched. If you've read the books literally at all, you know well that half-clan relationships aren't even the problem; they're literally just used as an excuse for why characters are being treated the way they are. They literally used that as a reason for why they treated Leafpool the way they did. 😂 and explain why he’d have sympathy for someone who admitted to crossing a river and getting their own kids killed

Thunderclan shouldn’t have broken the code by sending the kits out to their deaths, Appledusk shouldn’t have cheated or at least he should’ve waited until after the burial of the kits, Frecklewish shouldn’t have assumed the kits were her brother’s and shouldn’t have hurt Mapleshade, Ravenwing should know better too. We don’t even know Mapleshade’s full story nor her full relationship with Appledusk so we can’t say for sure whether it was manipulation or not. She also clearly cared about her kits.

Thank you for making Mapleshade actually take care of her kits while crossing the river! So many maps and animations have her going ahead of them, a subtle way to imply she was uncaring or neglectful to them when they were in danger, but in the book she had them swim ahead of her and was watching to make sure they made it to the stepping stones. Mapleshade did a lot of bad things, I hate that people try to create more bad out of her to make her completely evil instead of morally gray. She did enough to be called a villian without people trying to imply that a grieving mother who killed to set hallucinations of her kits free didn’t actually care about her kits

Maybe she really cared about kits,but it was a twisted love. She risked their life, and later she would admit that her kids were helpless (“And yet she did nothing?” Mapleshade rasped. “Those kits were helpless! How could she watch them drown?”) - so to some extent she knew what she was doing. Mapleshade may love her kits,but she really wasn't good mother to them. People don't make her more evil, because she really demonstrated some kind of neglect to her kits

Sure, she could’ve taken them to twolegplace but then what? Carry them individually over the fences, over the roads, not knowing anywhere safe and dry, dodging dogs and cars and people? To what end? Stay there until the river goes down? Wait for Thunderclans patrols to boost and catch them when she tries to take them to Riverclan in Greenleaf or for Oakstar to raid again? Or, she could’ve tried to get to the twoleg bridge, by going all the way through her territory, across the thunderpath, through *shadowclan* territory and then across the thunderpath again and alll the way through Fourtrees and just hope the kits don’t die of the cold, or greencough, or getting hit by a monster in between. The river wasn’t safe but *NOTHING* she could do at that point was safe. Any path she took could have killed her kits.

About bridge: it was lead straight from River Clan territory to Thunder Clan territory: «Trembling with hunger, Mapleshade plunged into the wispy undergrowth that edged RiverClan’s territory. She stayed well clear of the border as she headed uphill, toward the gorge. She knew there was a wooden Twoleg bridge just below the sheer walls of rock where she would be able to cross back to ThunderClan territory. » Also, about neglect. This is her quotes from "Crookedstar Promise": "My kin should have been the leader of RiverClan, not his!". She had ambitions related to kits, not just pure inoccent love. And we just going to forget about scene, where Maple were just happy that she went to DF and and did not grieve that she would never see children in Star Clan? :(

It was from Fourtrees to Riverclan, that’s why in series one, Thunderclan can’t use it when the river floods the same as it did in Mapleshades vengeance, they had to go into Shadowclan territory then when Shadowclan bans them from crossing again, they freak out bc they can’t cross back over. Riverclan leads them over the bridge, into Riverclan territory and then they use a fallen tree to cross. Thunderclan is boxed in by twolegplace, Shadowclan, and the River. As for patrols, I meant if she had taken them to Twolegplace to wait until the river went down in Greenleaf, Oakstar probably would’ve increased patrols to watch for her, or she ran the risk of running into normal patrols or hunting patrols when trying to get back to the river. As for her wanting her kits to be leader, yeah I don’t blame her when her kits DIED and she’s watching the descendants of her mates affair kits get everything she felt her own children deserved.

His eyes burned into Mapleshade’s. “You took a risk, bringing them this close to our boundary.” “I wanted to show them the river,” Mapleshade meowed.» She had told her kits that his father is Thunder Clan warrior, Birchface,so there was no need to show them the river. She knew that she should defence her secret. And she risked her secret, because she wanted to go for a walk in the forest with kits?... And no, she wasn't saving them from Rabbitfur: «Rabbitfur had wandered back to his sunny spot outside the elders’ den. Apart from some dozing cats, the clearing was empty. No one would take much notice if she took the kits out.». If Rabbitfur left kits alone, why she still wanted to take them out of ravine? Just because of her wishes? («Suddenly Mapleshade couldn’t bear to be in the ravine another moment»). I don't even talk about the fact that she risked her kids safety. And she was possessive of her children: «Frecklewish bent over the furry little bodies and touched her muzzle lightly to each squirming rump. “They are my brother’s gift to the Clan,” she murmured. “And the most precious creatures in the whole forest!” Mapleshade fought down the urge to bat Frecklewish away. These are my kits, not yours!». It's not very heathy, I guess :( And the last argument. River Clan warrior (!) told her that her kits are too young to swim. («Appledusk glanced once more at the kits, then headed back into the water. “Those kits are not old enough to be out of the nursery!” Milkfur called across the river. “What were you thinking of, bringing them here? They could have drowned!”»). And she didn't even listen to her. And even more, she would came to the river again. She had some ideas to help them («For a moment she considered taking her kits and running deeper into the forest, hiding her kits away from any cat who might harm them»), but she rejected these ideas and lead kits to the river,although Milkfur had told her not to do this because it's unsafe To everything that I listed here and earlier, I did not try to say that she was the worst mother in the world, I just trying to say that she wasn't perfect mother with a heart full a pure inoccent love to her kids as people think

coming back to this (paragraph copy and pasted from a different commenter) He literally did what squirrel flight did. Squirrel flight is apple dusk, maple shade is bramble claw and reed shine is ashfur. Squirrel wasn't in a relationship with ashfur but she was in a relationship with bramble, (Yes, squirrel didn't and up in a relationship with ash, ik ik). Apple dusk and reedshine got together after maples and his brake up. If apple dusk deserves the dark forest for that, then so does squirrel flight.

Squirrel was tricked by star clan into believing it needed to be Bramble, as well that she was unable to have kits and a lot more 3.) Apple blamed Maple for it all. I just want to give my argument for why the kits dying wasn’t Mapleshade’s fault because why not? The warrior code states that no kit should be turned away or harmed no matter what clan they are from. When Thunderclan run her out WITH HER KITS they were breaking the warriors code. Edit: I know that she is partially at fault but there are multiple cats to blame before her, she was doing what she could because she wanted to save them and give them the best life she could.

I think she's partially at fault for even taking them in the river during a flood (AND THERES ALSO LITERALLY A BRIDGE... WHY DIDN'T MAPLESHADE USE THE BRIDGE LMAO???) But the clan definitely shouldn't have cast her and her kits out. It's hard for a lone queen to care for kits all by herself, and the leader even said that he might have let her stay if Appledusk hadn't killed Birchface. That's just... not fair at all. That wasn't Mapleshade's or the kits fault at ALL.

She HAD to go to RiverClan, to Appledusk, it was the ONLY option. The drowning wasn’t her fault. Everything else was.

The first time we see him reciprocate Reedshine's affection was when he broke up with Mapleshade. "Oh, but Reedshine was pregnant," you claim. But Reedshine was only pregnant multiple days after Appledusk and Mapleshade broke up. Mind you, Reedshine wasn't even showing at the end of the book. The only reason Mapleshade knew Reedshine was pregnant was because Appledusk, the cat that got her pregnant, said she was pregnant. He wouldn't have broken up with Mapleshade if she hadn't ignored his concerns about her taking the kits across the river. The only reason he broke up with Mapleshade was because he believed that she was to blame for their kits drowning. (Keep in mind that Mapleshade knew the river wasn't safe. It was storming, two of her clanmates drowned in that exact river, Appledusk himself told Mapleshade to keep the kits away from the river, and one of the other riverclan cats stated that the kits were too young to even swim). Before he and Mapleshade broke up, he truly loved Mapleshade and their kits. Even after they broke up, he couldn't bring himself to fight Mapleshade, showing he still cared for her, just not romantically, despite the fact that Mapleshade was trying to harm not only Appledusk, but his new mate and his apprentice. Stepping away from his relationship with Mapleshade, he loved his new mate, Reedshine, just as much as he loved his former mate, Mapleshade. In fact, he loved and cared for Reedshine enough to sacrifice his life to save her, as Mapleshade was initially aiming for Reedshine, not Appledusk.

There were literally no romantic interactions between Appledusk and Reedshine until AFTER he *broke up* with Mapleshade. He simply moved on quickly and got with Reedshine, whom he was already close with. And nowhere in my comment did I even mention Mapleshade harming Perchpaw. However, she still traumatized Perchpaw by idk, beating him, and using him as bait, then killing his mentor. So, no matter her intentions, She harmed him physically and mentally. 🤯 Also, no. It wasn't a trap for only Appledusk. It was to lure in Appledusk *and* Reedshine. When Appledusk refused to fight, Mapleshade lunged at Reedshine. Her target was Reedshine, not Appledusk. And while Appledusk was innocent, Reedshine hardly even knew Mapleshade. Reedshine didn't have the opportunity to have wronged Mapleshade in the slightest because they only spoke once. Mapleshade's goal was to take everything from him so he'd suffer the way she suffered (even though he already lost his and Mapleshade's kits and the respect from his clanmates).

He said to Reed that he SECRETLY dated with Maple, which can mean that he had 2 at once. As I remember he broke with Maple when kits died. (In my version there was a lot of cutted off details, I can be wrong) and then Reed was pregnant. In all other ones I agree, but in my version there was none of this. There Apple jumped to fight first and hated Maple

I used to bé one and i was so annoying with ppl,now i'm kinda siding with mapleshade but i learned to not annoy ppl.fun fact i hated mapleshade before Reading her Book because of thé AMV that depicted her as a girl boss who was totally concious and enjoyed killing even tho in reality she was an overly naïve cat who gît into thé most traumatic shits while injured (thanks to frecklewish plus like riverclan had no business to personally treat her that badly) and got subject to hallucinations who told her that the only way for her kits to go to heaven was to kill thé cats who wronged her,still not an excuse but she's much more enjoyable when being depicted correctly liké in this amv
