Felt like this song worked well for showing two sides to mapleshade; not that either side is more false than the other cause they both got a lot of truth in em? Its that kind of idea that hurt people, hurt people u know (thats hard to get across in text lol it means ‘people that are hurt, tend to hurt others’ or smth like that) I wonder how much of mapleshade’s insistence that the death of her kits was the fault others is just a wavering mask to hide how much she blames herself
I was feeling kinda eh towards this project at first but then i watched it through when it was like 80% done and i was like o damn maybe im onto something fskjdlh so i’m feelin alright about how it turned out! there was a lot of editing experimentation hoo boy premiere did not enjoy exporting that lmao

heres the explanation/clarification for u: 0:01 bloomheart (mapleshade’s former mentor) is distressed over frecklewish who’s just been blinded by the snake mapleshade let out 0:11 mapleshade meeting with appledusk at the gathering, not realizing that apple is also mates with reedshine 0:14 rewind flashback to when thunderclan and riverclan fought over sunningrocks, where appledusk had thrust the thunderclan deputy birchface (who was also the leader’s son) into the river, and Birchface’s apprentice flowerpaw tries to save him 0:16 birchface and flowerpaw’s bodies are discovered; they drowned. Birchface’s father oakstar, and his sister frecklewish, are horrified, as are the whole of thunderclan. (for more context: thunderclan now heavily blames appledusk+riverclan for the death of two of their cats, while mapleshade believes that their deaths were just an unfortunate accident on appledusk’s part) 0:18 fastforward back to the ‘present’ where frecklewish is cooing over a pregnant mapleshade, convinced that maple is having birchface’s kits. Mapleshade awkwardly agrees, hoping that this would make it easier for her kits to be accepted into the clan, selfconciously aware of the fact that the true father is the riverclan cat that frecklewish believes her brother 0:25 ravenwing interprets a sign from starclan about mapleshade and her three kits (btw i personally like to think that this sign was warning them to not let the kits cross the river or else they’d fuckin drown fkjsdlh and that raven misinterpreted it as a warning of being half riverclan) 0:26 when mapleshade takes the kits to see the river they run into a riverclan patrol that appledusk is in. appledusk carries the kits back over to her and maple is pleased that he’s met their kits for the first time 0:28 ravenwing witnesses this interaction and figures out that appledusk is the father of maple’s kits 0:29 a clan meeting is called; raven has told oakstar about maple’s secret, and raven then reveals the truth publicly to the whole clan. Frecklewish is outraged to know that the kits’ father was not her brother but rather her brother’s murderer, and attacks maple 0:32 maple is exiled from thunderclan, so she flees to riverclan. Meanwhile, it starts to pour. 0:33 maple crosses the flooded river with her kits and a wave washes all of them away 0:35 appledusk and a riverclan patrol rescues her. They find her kits, but they drowned. 0:40 appledusk renounces maple as being his mate, and reedshine and him are shown to be very close 0:43 darkstar (leader of riverclan) refuses to let maple to stay in riverclan 0:44 maple is shocked and enraged by darkstar’s decision 0:48 maple is now seeking revenge, first stalking ravenwing as he journeys to the moonstone 0:53 maple, motivated by her hallucinatory dead kits begging for vengeance, kills raven and leaves his body out for the birds to pick apart, already moving on to kill the next cat 0:59 maple confronts frecklewish at snakerocks, knocking aside a rock to entice a snake to leap out and bite her, before fleeing to her next victim 1:03 maple talking about how she doesn’t regret the murders she’s committed. Reedshine shows up with appledusk and in a rage, mapleshade goes to attack her but appledusk leaps in front of her to take the blow instead 1:18 appledusk is dead, and while maple is distracted by her new kill perchpaw bites deep into her neck and they fall 1:22 maple stumbles away as reedshine yowls angrily after her, stricken by appledusk’s death 1:23 maple just reaches a barn as blood pours from her neck wound 1:29 rewind! Back to the start when maple was fawning over appledusk 1:33 frecklewish cooing over the kits that she assumes are her brother’s 1:34 maple is in the flooded river. realizing her kits have vanished and she panics, trying to find them 1:37 (and then back to present lol) oakstar disgusted that maple took appledusk as a mate. Mapleshade feels desperately alone and shunned by her own clanmates during the clan meeting 1:44 the scene cuts to when maple is in riverclan being refused a place in their clan, her kits dead, and her mate choosing reedshine over her/her kits 1:47 maple kills ravenwing, frecklewish, and appledusk in a wild, heartbroken vengeance 1:49 maple feeling numb and utterly alone without her kits and no clan to go home to after emerging from the flooded river (thats why her fur is wet) 1:55 ok now we gettin a lil more abstract: pink= memories, blue= ongoing things that are happening. About the prophercy i think it is about that the kits are sticks that sticks normally break (kits dying) and the leaf is Mapleshade that leaves are above the water, they normally shatter a little bit (Mapleshade being shattered to pecies at her kids dying) and that it would leave a mark on her

This is amazing and I feel both Mapleshade lovers and haters can appreciate this! I love how it shows her cruel actions but showing she was a victim in ways as well (and yes, she is. Appledusk cheated and OAkstar had no right to exile literal kits) but what she did was unexcusable.

I don't know if anyone noticed that, but I really like how u portrayed Mapleshade's three hearts on her cheeks and neck changing depending on situation. Like, in the first half of ur video, the hatred side of Mapleshade, her hearts are more sharp, maybe shwong her terrible killer actions, but when it switches to her tragedic mother side her hearts seems more rounded, showing her love and emotions. In the part, where she lost her kittens, seeing her mate with other she cat her hearts were broken. Just... Really nice details, and there's a lot of them, u did an amazing and hard work, and it's very pleasing to see! :>

I can't help but replay the lipsync over and over especially, but i really love this work as a whole! My favorite part is probably how it highlights some aspects of Mapleshade that people find sympathetic in here while not shying away from showing all the cruel and inexcusable things she did. Despite the motive of her kits death it's clear that she is still not the victim in this. Your animation shows her as a well rounded villain and character, with the art and editing being amazing aswell. The expressions are also wonderful as always!

I’ve actually stopped reading warriors after The Darkest Hour, and I’ve never read Mapleshade’s story but I can tell you rn that I don’t feel bad at all for the cats that turned on her. Appledusk and especially the thunderclan medicine cat.

Although Appledusk is one of my favorite characters (along with Maple), if you don't feel bad for them, that's fine, but please don't sympathize with Mapleshade's murders :( losing people is hard, especially when they're your kids, but you shouldn't defend her for the murders. I'm not saying you're doing this, because you aren't, you never were, just saying please don't ever do that. I've seen too many people victimize Mapleshade and make EVERYONE in the wrong and justify her murders, its just a little tiring, y'know?

Maple had kittens and lied to her clan, leader, friends, mentor and medicine cat about a cat who had died with his apprentice. Freckle was so devastated about her brother’s death and hearing her friend was having his kittens was like a dream come true to her. She was lied about those kittens being related to her just to find that those kittens are the kids of your brother’s killer (ik apple didn’t kill birch and flower but that’s how Thunderclan saw it) that must of been like losing birch all over again so of course she was angry at maple, before maple kills freckle freckle feels awful about the kit’s deaths. Apple just loved his kits so much just to find out that maple made them cross a flooding river despite her not being able to swim. He gets understandably angry, in his eyes maple was the one that caused their deaths by making them cross in a river. (don’t agree with his cheating). Now to raven, raven was a medicine cat, his mentor had just been died so raven was already upset. Starclan tells raven that there are things that don’t belong there, when he confronts maple she refuses to tell her clan the truth so he tells his leader just so he can know of the situation. Oak exiles maple and her kits but while he’s doing it raven looks horrified. Raven was only doing his job by listening to cat heaven and telling his leader, he never intended for anything bad to happen. Maple is the one who is most at fault for taking a mate from another clan, planning to use her kits are tools in her relationship, using birch’s name for her own gain, and killing because her head told her too.

this is two days late but THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THAT REEDSHINE WAS PREGNANT. like seriously i dont see it often, appledusk was protecting a PREGNANT SHE-CAT. she was going to kill reedshine and her kits, which is horrible. reedshine didn't even know about appledusk and mapleshade and still stood by his side. i also don't think it was anyone else's fault than mapleshade for bringing her YOUNG KITS across a BIG RIVER, then feels sorry for herself when they drown. this was a really good amv, good job!! :)

I love Mapleshade so much, not because of what she did to the three cats (can’t remember all of their names because I have read her story in a while) but because she loved her kits so much and did it all for them. This portrays her so well and the fact at the end she was so happy to see her kits hadn’t been involved in the battle although they had probably already faded I don’t think she wanted to believe that 😭

This is absolutely your magnum opus! Easily some of the most creative editing I have ever seen in a PMV, and I am blown away by your bold and dynamic action scenes! The raw emotions you portray in your PMVs are stellar as always, and the hypnotic flow of the editing matches the song incredibly well. I know so many people have said this already, but I love the way you portray her! Personally I will also feel bad for her because the situation wasn't entirely her fault, but she wasn't completely the victim either. I think everyone could've done better in Mapleshade's vengance tbh Maple herself included. While she did bring a lot of it on herself she was in love and that was criminlised. Love was criminalized if it was someone from another clan and I understand why, but warrior cats was kind of messed up for the way the treated cross clan relationships. She was in love and cheated on and her kits died and it all could've been avioded if thunderclan hadn't exiled her BUT that doesn't mean she didn't make mistakes. But another problem is the fact that you can't really supress love it's a hard thing to do and she really was placed in an awkward situation with the whole Birchface thing and it's really easy to fall into lies, though her actions were terrible and she coped with the rejection and death by blame. Then she started hallucinating and quite literally going insane. Her kits all didn't deserve their deaths and the clans could've done so much better. I feel as if there could've been a redemption arc for her quite easily if she was given a second chance. Ashfur tried to kill because he was heartbroken and in love and while he never actually killed anyone the intentions were the same and he would've gone ahead of it. I know starclan has to be careful and they made a major mistake with Ashfur but if Ashfur gets a second chance I feel like Maple and Frecklewish should too. They both made mistakes and Ashfur was worse than Frecklewish. The starclan systym is messed up tbh like Juniperclaw wasn't let in but Ashfur was!? Squirrelflight and leafpool were nearly rejected!?!?! But Graystripe was easily welcomed as was Silverstream, and I know these are different scenarios, but I think you see the point I'm making. I feel like Maple could've gone both ways and if given a chance to get over the incident and see her kits and be shown that it wasn't their wishes etc it could've been turned around. Anyways I didn't mean to write an essay sorry.

OH MAN I don’t think I’ve commented on ur vids before but I just wanted to say I love ur work SO much- this is definitely one of my fav big projects you’ve done *__* in general I think you do a fantastic job of making the characters feel like-people, essentially. You draw very expressive expressions (which I’m sure u get told a lot) but additionally combine it with really great composition and visual storytelling, so it really feels like I can actually tell what the characters are thinking and get a consistent idea of their personality & how you are characterizing them. And on top of that the story is portrayed in a way that’s really fun and interesting to watch! Sometimes I feel people tend to excel in one or the other-either they’re really good at putting the emotions into their art, or they’re really good at making something really cool & visually appealing that tells a story but in a way where I feel a little removed from being up close to how the characters feel. I think you do both really really well! And each of your projects are really distinct from each other in terms of art direction, tone, everything-again I think your intuition for characterization & emotion exemplifies this-each character you portray and how you portray them feels so unique and clear and the fact you usually go for more simple art directions where color & emotion & dynamic shots are focused on more than like, highly detailed environments and backgrounds works really well to help your work stand out. I specifically like this amv because I feel it really demonstrates the way you’re also able to tell a story that gets portrayed over and over in fan work in a way that feels new and refreshing entirely through how you characterize mapleshade alone-the events are exactly the same but again the fact you highlight a character’s personality so well makes me , think, essentially, and really put myself in tune with how they feel. Runner up example of this I really love is sin triangle hollyleaf, a lot of hollyleaf videos have it be a linear telling of her story and inner conflict, which can be cool, but your amv feels like I am really Inside Holly’s brain feeling the chaos and disorder of her struggles. Like a lot of holly stuff has the ashfur death scene be this super big scene that’s a massive beat/climax to the story the artist is telling but you give it like, one (1) quick shot and still make it feel just as impactful because of the way it’s framed with eeeverything else I’ve followed your work for a few years and I’ve found every time Im doing a bigger project like a pmv or animatic where I have to tell a full story w a character I always come back and end up rewatching your videos on and off for a few weeks. (Recently I’ve been more interested in pmv/amv type projects than map parts so I am definitely currently coming back to some of these a lot) I think it’s because I’ve always been really character centric and love anything adjacent to-character studies. I like art and making art that makes people [Think] about the character being portrayed through conveying a lot of thought the creator clearly put into drawing them. And I think u do that super well in a way that rlly resonates w me !!!!! This is a very long comment which might be awkward and I think I get a little repetitive but I like being earnest abt work I really like…I think it’s good for the Art Ecosystem. Excited to see what u do next!!! (Regardless of like. Fandom or anything im not even into wc really. JSJJXNX like I also really like your widomauk bad ideas but I have never listened to crit roll OTL)

This really was how the book went. No one was purely good in this tale..except the kits and appledusk's apprentice..and most were pretty grey with a few exceptions of characters who did actual evil stuff for no reason but to be evil (maple did do bad stuff however she was insane making her actions not fully her fault, along with the fact she was lead to believe via hallucinations she was doing something good, so she didn't exactly do it just to be evil but did it thinking it was good due to poor mental health after loosing her entire life..she was mentally unwell and needed help but due to everyone throwing her away her condition worsened till she broke, this is a reminder to people that we should help each other! Even if they did something really stupid, a bad mistake, they deserve help before they shatter mentally and do worse just as maple did..she killed her kits by accident in a moment of poor judgement then with a lack of help progressively got worse till she broke mentally doing much worse).

There’s also Reedshine. She barely did anything. We also can’t forget Myler and that unnamed kittypet Mapleshade’s slapped. Calling everyone in the book a weak-hearted cat isn’t how I’d describe the book when there are a few characters who are shown to at least care(Nettlepaw, Myler, if you read you get it.)

AMAZING! I've gained so much more appreciation for this video after reading the explanations! :D I LOVE the symbolism and the intricate thought put into this. I especially love the ending. It's such an interesting take on the character. At first, I was a bit confused as to why Mapleshade was smiling at the end----before I read the explanation, it didnt register to me that the background was doing something entirely different than the foreground. I wish that was portrayed a bit more clearly, because without the explanation, I don't think I ever would have gotten that, BUT besides that, this is really phenomenal. Wonderful job as usual, peppermint! :D
