Luke's callout to Julie was so sweet. Interesting how Alberta brought an infusion of money when it was needed and Julie brought an infusion of ideas and energy. A house like this is an enormous responsibility - so easy for it to become a burden - and you two seem the perfect team to meet its unrelenting demands in a fast changing world. Lucky Mapperton!

I absolutely love Mapperton, but especially you two; that you both are in charge of it. You are a delightful couple, and completely natural, and honest. There are people who try to be funny, but you two are just NATURALLY funny. Also, very informative in an equally natural, relatable way. And of course the same can be said about Luke's parent's, who are treasures as well. Luke, yes I can imagine how you must've felt contemplating taking on Mapperton and it's many challenges; however, you struck gold with marrying Julie. The ideal partner for you personally, as well as being your co-partner in all things Mapperton. Lots of love to you both. Thanks for your wonderful Mapperton channels. I never comment, but I would like to acknowledge what a lovely couple you are and how beautifully you are managing the Herculean task of running a historic estate with a modern family.
@alexandramarkus998720 күн бұрын
My husband's family has 2 ancestral estates that are each hundreds of years old (a summer and a winter one with dozens of acres of land) and we're seeing his parents retire early to gear up to take over running them from his grandfather. The amount of effort that goes into maintenance is absolutely bonkers, as you say. It is definitely not all sunshine and rainbows, although it is such a privilege to have so much family history laid out before us and preserved so well over several generations. It's insanely expensive though, all of the family trust (and much of their savings) goes toward upkeep and it's exhausting but worth it. Many people we know have had to sell and we are doing everything in our power to ensure this doesn't happen and that our children will continue to enjoy their heritage in future generations.

Americans watch Downton Abbey, and all sorts of beautiful Period Dramas and imagine life as it was - even though many of us know how WWI and WWII changed everything from the way The Aristocracy lived to where they lived. But, as an Anglophile, I would love to see as many historic homes, churches and Abbey’s restored as possible! Love 💗 you guys!

Most UK churches are maintained. Mapperton church is unusual because it does not have a village or town to help sustain it. The Church of England has 16000 churches and 44 cathedrals, many of which are very old and very large. The church in my town was built around 1486. And the church in the next town has an amazing set of medieval glass which dates from 1500 to 1517. Mapperton has some medieval glass too. It is quite mind boggling to think of 500 year old glass.

I think Meta-Mapperton is actually a really interesting idea. With the technology right now, it would be limited to "walking" all over the estate, but as the technology develops and becomes more tactically immersive, you could include things like virtual weddings, were people get married virtually. This would be especially welcome for people who have family and friends all over the world--they could all attend, even great-granddad who lives in that small town in the mountains, and could never have attended otherwise. :) VERY neat Luke!

When I was growing up, my aunt was a good friend of an Earl. Tragically his eldest son died fairly young and because of primogeniture the estate was lined up to pass to the grandson. My aunt's friend passed a few years ago and I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for this young man who had the running of the estate put onto his shoulders at such a young age. He didn't get a chance to enjoy that part of life where he could just be himself before taking on the running of the house. Of course he's lucky to have grown up in a privileged position, but there are significant down sides in that he couldn't just go have a career of his own, the estate is like a boat anchor on him that way

Second comment: the rewilding project is extremely exciting, and something that has been dear to my heart here in the US since the late 1990s, when I launched a national magazine called Wild Garden, which helped people understand how to repopulate and re-landscape their properties with native plants that support wildlife. Kudos to you for this project, and I hope other manor houses in the UK will follow suit!

So grateful to you both for letting us peek into your home and lives! Living in a historic manor house is my idea of a fantastic way to spend your time; raising your family, restoring the house and grounds, and especially the rewilding projects! Wow, just WOW! Sharing that literally with the entire world is almost beyond comprehension. But thank you SOOO much! The room with that fireplace, the paneling, those floors, that rug! I am swooning here! What can you tell us about that paneling? It looks like it is Tudor era, yes? The fireplace mantel? The significance of the ornamentation? How does one care for that wood paneling? My eyes are telling me that it needs 'wood food', or oiling... can that be done? The flooring... oak? SO many questions! Maybe you should have an internship program with volunteers to learn how and actually DO some of the work! I'd volunteer in a heartbeat, except for my 16+ year old cats who cannot be left even overnight! Eagerly awaiting your next posting on rewilding progress, now that spring is upon us. When do your gardens bloom for optimal viewing? How is the pool sealing coming along? How are your children preparing for their future at Mapperton? OK, I'll stop now!
