The Japan year 5 thing is what is called "Nengo", which divides eras by which emperor was/is on the throne. Recently, in 2019, the previous emperor retired and the new one was enthroned, hence 2023 is the 5th year of the "Reiwa" period.

1:44 Ballet for Russia is actually very accurate. Peter the Great created a new Russia which rivaled the society of the West with magnificent courts and palaces. His vision was to challenge the west. Classical ballet entered the realm of Russia not as entertainment but as a "standard of physical comportment to be emulated and internalized - an idealized way of behaving." The aim was not to entertain the masses of Russians, but to cultivate new Russian people.

Hey Jack, at 1:56 you showed an American proposal to create a canal through Israel. It should be noted that this was NOT proposed recently. The plan was made in 1963, when US relations with Egypt were quite bad, and there was a possibility that Egypt could block the US its allies from using the Suez Canal. So the US made an alternative idea, with a canal through Israel. But obviously, this never happened.

2:20 It's because as you go up, i.e., the altitude increases, the atmosphere gets thinner and thinner and the temperature cools down.
@nainakukillayakrishna6524Ай бұрын
Yeah and some schist about cold winds
@Mercure250 Жыл бұрын
2:20 Heat does come from the Sun, but you need to take the greenhouse effect into consideration, which traps the heat closer to sea level. The higher you go, the less atmosphere there is, and the less greenhouse effect there is. The area behind the Himalayan mountain range is the Tibetan plateau, which is also at a higher altitude. Also, temperature is affected by air currents, especially coming from the sea (water temperature plays a role in regulating air temperature), and those are blocked by big mountains. 4:33 To clarify, pretty much all countries do use the Gregorian calendar (the one that says we're in 2023), because it's useful for international communication and coordination, but in some countries, it's used alongside a traditional or religious calendar. Which makes sense, of course, since the Gregorian calendar is itself a traditional/religious calendar in Europe. The Japanese calendar works by indicating who the current emperor is, and what year of his rule we are in. Currently, we are in Reiwa 5. World War 2 ended in Showa 20. The year 2000 corresponds to Heisei 12, and so on.

4:45 Here's an explanation for some of the years on the map. In East Asia (starting with China), years were set to be the X year of the reign of the Emperor. So people would say it's the 3rd year of the reign of Kangxi, then the 4th year of the reign of Kangxi. And when he died it would be the 1st year of Yongzheng, then 2nd year, etc. Japan uses the same system revolving around their own emperor so it's the X year of Reiwa. The ROC decided to still use this system but with a lack of an emperor they just slapped it onto year 1912 as the 1st year. Thus with the 1911-1912 revolution, the ROC notates years as the 1st year of the republic, 2nd year of the republic, etc. Similarly North Korea adapts the same system but it's year 1 is the year of the birth of Kim Il-sung (which also happens to be 1912). Also, 1444 looks like the year according to the Islamic Calendar staring with something to do with Muhamed's pilgrimage.

They left out the most insane part of the Israel canal plan from 1963! It wasn't JUST that they wanted to make a new Suez, they wanted to string together 540ish nuclear weapons through the desert to make it. Obviously that did not get too too far, but it is quite the interesting topic! You can actually find the declassified memorandum of the original proposal.

7:31 Advice for Jack when pronouncing finnish: A=is not "a" in "apple", its the "u" in "umbrella" E="e" in "elephant" and is always pronounced, unlike in English I=the "e" in "me" O="o" in "more" U="oo" in "book" Y= even if it's at the beginning of a word its not "j" but its the German "ü" Ä= the "a" in "apple" Ö= the "ö" in the German word "röd" T= is hard not soft in "Kunta" R= also makes a hard sound. Often also hard for english speakers to pronounce. It makes like a car engine sound when made long. One "r" is just a very very short car engine sound. C=k Many vowels together= pronounce both vowels like I taught you don't skip them! Two same consonants= its a hard sound of the consonant with a short pause at the beginning. The pause is when you prepare the consonant with your tongue before actually saying it. There is no pause if its just one consonant. Note: All letters are always pronounced and always pronounced the same way as I taught you!!!!!!!!!! Nothing is silent!!!!!! Only exception is the ng which is prounced the same as in english Note 2: Everything is pronounced exactly how its written!! No other sounds!!!

The reason why the Himalayan Mountains block off the heat even though it's "coming from the sun which is way higher" is, that the distance a sun ray travels through the atmosphere has an impact on the strength at which it hits the ground. Since the sun only "moves" between 23.5°N and 23.5°S over the course of a year, that part of the earth (called the tropical zone) gets heated the most. Now, hot air always "wants" to move to colder air due to thermodynamics, therefore the hot air masses from the tropical zone form huge wind-streams (called "trade winds") that reach outwards, taking the heat (as well as some water molecules from the Indian Ocean) with them as they go. Upon "crashing into" the Himalayan Mountain Range, they are forced to rise up because there is no other place to go, so they ascend and cool off, eventually raining off by the foot of the mountain. PS: These trade winds are the reason for the Indian Monsoon
