Only in medieval Europe could a war last 116 years, be called the Hundred Years' War, and still end with both sides thinking, 'Well, that was a colossal waste of time!' Imagine holding a grudge so long that even your great-grandkids are like, 'Can we just call it a day already?

In fact their is no 100 years war, it's not one war but diffrents wars betwen France and England for diffrents reasons, it's like say that Franco prussian war, ww1 and ww2 are the same wars it's basicly France and germany fighting eachothers with period of peace and with the time more and more actors join the conflict.

Not wounds. Wounds make it sound like you get some cut and count as casualties. Casualties counts as deaths and people put out of action with getting injured for life like maimed or losing limbs or dying days-weeks later after a wound. But it’s still crazy as it states over 3 million died from this war but many are probably died of the black death at that time and it will count as death in war.

Towards the end of the video, you can really see the British Empire coming into effect because of the big advances they made, more than usual in previous attempts to break through the French lines in the east, even though they lost, this war would shape the entire future of British Colonialism and help the empire improve on its mistakes it made in the aforementioned war, and shape the future of the world.
@solwen

For England there would be more than a century between their defeat in the 100 years war and their first colony (outside of Ireland). There is no British empire there, not even a shadow of it or even improvement on past mistakes : The end of the 100 years wars would start more than 30 years of civil war in England.

Big revolt. The French were losing badly after Poitier and with the King prisoner of the English, his son the Dauphin tried to call things down and to assert his power in the capital but the populous went into a frenzy and basically gave the city to a wealthy commoner who was then more or less the equivalent of the mayor of Paris (« provost of the merchants of Paris ») named Etienne Marcel. The Dauphin was captured by this guy who suddenly became the most powerful man in the country. However the Dauphin quickly escaped and assembled an army and some Parisians finally turned on Marcel and killed him before the French prince arrived in Paris.

The Black Death ran from 1347 to 1353 and caused an enormous amount of fatalities, France lost more than 30% of its population alone, England up to 50%. It falls right into this period, quite a few of the free companies that fought in this war turned brigands and ravaged the country side their losses in this period are not reliable at all.

When looking a these you understand how demography is a powerful weapon in cold weapons times. Despite terrible generals and military leaders, catastrophic defeats and diseases. France was able to rebuild quickly huge armies to contest english advances. England struggled to follow and each invasion was bitten to death piecemeal until the end where France had reformed their armies and leadership into a pre modern system with firearms and canons of the time and they crushed England.

I always thought from books on the topic that England held a larger chunk of Aquitaine for the mid and later portions of this war (Edward III through Henry V), stretching from the Gironde to the border with Navarre along the coast. Is this incorrect in light of new research or something?

over 116 years, the losses are ridiculous. the great black plague of the Middle Ages decimated 7 million of the 17 million French people in the space of some years. which corresponds to the period of acceleration shortly after the start (~ 1348-1353)... and yes, most of the time in war, we die of illness.

Whay I find most interesting is how the english+local allies(this was also a french vs french war) consistently suffered fewer deaths than the french. You'd think that after a couple of decades someone in France would say 'how about we don't lose 3 for every one they lose'.
@lecrabesavant4435
@lecrabesavant4435 3 ай бұрын
no the death are not only soldiers, so since France suffered a lot more from the black death and fought other major power (like Burgundy) so I think it's normal that they suffered more, since the war was also in France

a few mistakes despite an awesome job. The entirety of Dauphiné becomes French as of 1349 and not only current Drôme. Also, Poitiers is only retaken by the French in 1372 and 23kms South of Poitiers is Gençay that is retaken by the French in 1375. The English lose grip on Poitou much slower than shown here. Amongst other minor mistakes.....
