This time of year is one where several Hollywood types pat themselves on the back at the Oscars, and where people at Crunchyroll try to highlight the best that anime had to offer this past year. They both forgot about Mari Okada and her film Maquia.

Maquia was a movie that really, really affected me. It's rare I find stories that reach into my heart as much as I want them too, and I treasure those that do. Maquia was mystical and fantastical but also slow and down to earth. I felt the growth of the characters and I could understand it. It tackles parenthood so well, all of it's struggles, it's merits, and why it's so beautiful. I fell in love with this film quickly after watching it, and the ending still resonates in my heart. It was truly, truly beautiful, and no award can truly convey how amazing it was.

ExtremeSManpig I mean, I didn’t really like Maquia on the first view, it was so jumpy that I couldn’t follow along. The dragons didn’t need to be in it at all. Her sister is kidnapped I guess, and they make an effort to save her. What was the film really about? Besides the okay message near the end. They could have done a better job at explaining everything. I really wanted to be invested to, like i read the synopsis, and it sounded fantastic.

People, including me, say all the time "Oh my gosh I cried so hard at this movie" or "Holy crap that show had me SOBBING" but, at least in my case, it's always an exxageration, if not a blatant lie. Sometimes I tear up, rarely I cry, never do I sob. But throughout the length of this movie. I cried for real at like 6 different parts. And at the very end. I. Was. SOBBING. LIKE HARD, LOUD SOBS. This was the first and last time ANY movie, book, or show has done that to me. I also love Wolf Children to death and it's another movie I can count on to make me cry for real.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms is such a good film. For me, it was close to being in the same class as A Silent Voice and Your Name from previous years, (other films that the Oscars forgot that were better than pretty much everything else those years). That is why I was just as crushed to see that the Anime Awards snubbed it as well, because it has some of the strongest theming and best animation of the year, (certainly better than Mazinger Z and Fireworks). Maquia also has an emotional musical theme called 'Viator' that rivals A Silent Voice's 'Lit,' and Your Name's 'Nandemonaiya,' for poignancy and heartfelt impact. Even the way the music is written echoes the theme of the story.

I would say the biggest mistake Maquia made was the release. It is pretty impossible to get it legally in my country and even the illegal means didn’t add it until recently (I am guessing they were waiting for the release of the dvd so they wouldn’t have to sub themselves). And it seems even in America it was hard to watch it. If no one watches no one will credit. Still my favorite film of 2018 tho

So is this video proof that the Crunchyroll Awards is primarily for shonen and heavily publicised shows and movies? Because I'm wondering how an animated movie of this caliber gets recognition in something like the Oscars, which views animation as a somewhat lesser form of entertainment but still acknowledges and accepts the medium for what it is, while Crunchyroll doesn't even lift a finger and looks at the industry as a whole rather than just what is the most popular during each season throughout the year. I'm legit curious to know why this was overlooked by Crunchyroll for nomination.

This honestly really pisses me off, it was my favorite film or tv show of the last year. Not just anime, from western animated stuff I saw and loved into the spider verse, but it wasn’t as good, from western live action film I saw Roma and think and hope it’ll go down in history viewed as a masterpiece, still I didn’t like it as much as Maquia. Not surprised by the Oscar snub as that’s normal but the Crunchyroll snub shows a surprising level of ignorance from the group you’d expect to stay up on anime. I’m not surprised when I hear the Academy voters didn’t watch the animation nominees as that’s just kinda what happens at this point but from what I’ve heard the largest reason Maquia didn’t get nominated for the Crunchyroll awards was that most of the people involved in said nomination hadn’t seen it. There’s not enough anime films that come out every year for them to have any excuse for it, it was in theaters, I saw it twice in theater. Yet these people who supposedly should be experts on anime did not see one of the major anime films of this year.

I really loved this movie, even more so for how ambitious the story is with its unique fantasy setting and different cultures, along with a narrative that takes place over decades. Mari Okada could have easily just done a more down to earth teenage romantic drama for her directorial debut a la AnoHana or Anthem of the Heart, but she clearly had a vision and passion for what she wanted to do. The only nitpick I have would be regarding some of Ariel's motivations being a bit muddy. On the CR Awards (which I agree, people take too seriously, its just a fun thing to vote on): Its not that surprising to see the film with the largest amount of theatrical screenings attached to one of anime's biggest properties win an award based on votes, especially given how most of the other nominees just weren't as widely available to be seen (less days in less theaters). Unlike many of the other categories where all the nominees were (mostly) available for everyone on some streaming platform instantly, Best Film is really the only category that's like this.

Just watched it and I now see why you were so devistated in your anime awards video. I have literally seen none of the other movies, but if there were 6 movies better than this last year I have some serious catching up to do.

After watching this review last week, me and my husband watched it last Friday and I cried for 15 minutes straight. When the Collector's Edition comes out in a month from now, I decided to gift it to my dearest friend, who became unwillingly pregnant at 17 and is now married and the most lovingly and caring 25 y/o mother of 2 kids I have ever met. Maquia's hardship and love reminded me so much of her and how much I look up to her. What a great movie!

This film is truly a masterpiece. A hidden gem and so underrated. The story is touching, the characters are realistic and lovable, the soundtrack is exceptional, and of course to top that, t h e a r t ; each and every scene had me pause the film to get a better look at it. Words, images and sound were weaved as one. Truly beautiful

Watched Maquia for the first time last night and loved it, and have enjoyed this very good review (as usual). About to rewatch it, thanks to Madman providing the Blu-Ray. Anyway, hope you have a great 2022! Cheers!

Thank you so much for touching on this film. I had the pleasure of watching Maquia when it was shown in my local cinema, and my best friend and I left bawling our eyes out. It might be my favorite anime film of all time, and I wish that it was more well known.

I bought this movie and saw it with my cousin and my brother's girlfriend. Then that scene happens *"sorry Ariel your moma is gonna break her promise"* and we're all ugly silent crying. Even my brother who only came in and saw the last 20 minutes teared up and like the movie.

What a well-written review! I am finally going to see this movie TONIGHT! However I thought that I should watch your review first! I can't wait to see what I think! I think, if people hold a truly good movie in their hearts and recommend it to others, and can remember it as a good movie for themselves in their own mind, it will always be a classic in a way!

I bought this as soon as it came out and watched it with my friends. We all cried like babies honestly. Even now, as i watch this and see certain scenes. The dialogue from them flowing back into my head. I feel like i am going to cry. Maquia is a beautiful film, and okida is my new favorite director because of it.

I saw Maquia in its North American Debue at a film festival last summer and was not prepared to watch such a masterpiece. It is truly a travesty that it did not get more mentions. And as a side note I will make it my next anime video to own because it was such a great piece of artwork!

I completely agree with you. I got to see it on an international flight last summer while it was just hitting theaters outside of Japan. I was just flipping through foreign films and this came up. I had never heard of it. Wow, was this movie gorgeous. The story was fantastic. I'm so sad it never got hype or advertisement.

I saw Maquia at a screening at the House of Film here in Oslo 3 weeks ago, and I loved it. I was kind of sceptical going in, as I didn't really know much about it or the director other than that she worked on Anohana (which I have yet to see. I know, I'm a monster) and the promo-art made me think it would be another one of those "I love him, but I must watch him die because I'm immortal"-romances. But damn if I didn't feel stupid 20 minutes in, and from there on I was totally invested and cried several times. I might discover some flaws if I rewatch it, but after that first viewing my critcial senses had gotten a good beating by my bleeding heart, and I needed to call my mom when I got home. XD

I just got back from seeing Liz and the Blue Bird and Mirai at the JCCC in Toronto. Found out about them through a random google search for Mirai showtimes in Canada, but I'll be following their anime showings in the future. Looks like I missed this and Lu Over the Wall during their film festival in the summer.

Amen. This movie really moved me to the point where I actually thought "i guess having kids is not that bad". This movie had me yelling at my Mum how much I loved her. Such a beautiful moving movie, with so many aspects relating to Motherhood, and finding oneself. The backgrounds were amazing and I loved the main song that plays in the ending, listening to it can sometimes make me cry.
