Honestly, the opening song “Welcome To Losspass” was one of the main things that got me into this game. It’s… simply the best song ON the DS. I played it in summer of 2022 after my trips to the pool and it was… perfect.

I really wanna come back to this, and play the game first, but I wanna say something about how this game looks. Have you ever stretched an image and saw the artifacting that comes with it? I like doing sketches and art in MS Paint, and there’s some sort of emotion that stretching artifacts and contrasting resolutions provide. It’s like seeing the brushstrokes of a painting, or how linework, which doesn’t exist in real life, can be used for expression. I haven’t really seen anywhere else… except in the DS port as I see it here?! The roads look stretched out, which adds to the feeling of a long highway. The low res environment textures paired with high def eyes is amazing! As a designer first, programmer and artist second I really wanna experiment with this aesthetic! Thanks for introducing this to me!!!
@stephenanthony5923 Жыл бұрын
From a classical perspective, the success of art is not in the delight it produces in the experiencer but how closely it conveys the intent and message of the artist(s) or at least completes some kind of communicative loop of understanding between creator(s) and experiencer(s). Invoking pleasure or satisfaction in the experiencer can be an important part of the work, but I don't think it's required to exist in the work to be considered art. Appealing to pleasure and expectations only can muddle the intent and message. It can befuddle the recipient's mind and make the media feel hollow. So that's why you can't always give people what they want, and why they're never really happy if they do get it. Great video.

This was a great video! FSR is my all-time favorite game, it basically inspired me to start writing myself. It's the first piece of media I've ever experienced that felt like it made just for me, it's awesome. You really give voice in your vids to something I feel really strongly that I realize (despite how much capital-G Gamers would clown on me for it) I care more about the story, aesthetics, and overall vibes of games more than the actual gameplay. I like how you also gave credit to the other people besides Suda who made FSR possible, I always feel like Akira Ueda in particular never gets enough credit for the stuff he's made what with Contact just kinda being written off by most people as a Mother-ripoff. Anyway I just want to make the small addendum that FSR also took a lot of inspiration from Franz Kafka's The Castle, they're both stories about abrasive and strange dudes getting called in to a strange place to do a job only to spend more time getting sidetracked by said places weird inhabitants. Kurayami Dance wasn't Suda's only work that took inspiration from it.

While i admit it stumped me a couple times to the point of resorting to looking up a guide, i actually really enjoyed the puzzle system in FSR. Using the guidebook serves a dual purpose, imo: it provides a framework to use to determine solutions to puzzles, and also fleshes out the lore, context, and characters of the island, which i think is just really bright game/story design. Regardless of the reality/place in the KTP narrative Losspass holds, i really felt intimately connected to the place when i was done with it. People talk about how Sumio is basically suda's spin on agent cooper in twin peaks, and i think that's really applicable here; mondo comes into the island as an outsider, and despite initial hostility from the residents, through the process of investigation he really finds a home with and love for the people of losspass, making the ending even more bittersweet.

KZbin has been recommending me some banger channels lately, I love it. I remember finding this game as a child while I was looking for 'Ace Attorney type games' to play and well... I guess if you squint a bit lol. Had no idea what to do, although it probably didn't help that I could only understand a bit of English back then. I didn't even know it was related to other games. Bought both Silver Cases fairly recently but haven't gotten around to playing them yet, so I skipped the end of the video where you talked about its connections to that. I might have to return to FSR (and this video) once I'm finished with those games then. Could definitely be an interesting and possibly nostalgic experience

CHRISTINA Why, why is there no more Christina in the video- oh my goodness. Though in all seriousness, I'm really glad you covered Flower, Sun, and Rain! I've never played any of Suda's games before, apart from maybe, I believe that I have a vague, distant memory of playing Shadows of The Dammed, but other than that, no experience at all. Though, in particular, I would hear people talk about Lollipop Chainsaw, No More Heroes, Silver Case and most recently, thanks to you, Killer 7. While whenever I heard people discuss FSR they'd glaze over it, basically call it whacky and move on to the other entries of Suda's portfolio. So not only do I appreciate that you took the time to go into FSR more, but I'm stoked that I can vicariously experience it through you lmao On the note of sequels, I think as much as I dig a sequel that is in a similar vein to what came before it, personally I want sequels to be more out there! Not in terms of scope, but if we are talking about games, I want that sequel to be different, for it to genre hop, change settings, have whole different mechanics even. I don't know, it feels like people have this idea that sequels should all but replace what came before it and I don't vibe with that. On the opposite end of things, I do vibe with Grasshopper manufacture's approach to game design. The combination of that meta focus as well that, "we do what we want because it's how we envision our games to be" type mentality, which is hella groovy. Something I've seen and noticed is that no matter what you do, as an artist, there are going to be people that aren't going to like the stuff you make. And I feel that the more and more you attempt to appeal to everyone, or even to an imaginary audience, the art that you end up making starts becoming further and further away from that element that makes it beautiful in the first place, that element being the artist themselves, their experience, and essentially their vison on the world. Hitting it out of the park again Mara, thanks for such a gnarly video. Also this goes without saying but the pacing for the transitions are superb.
@maraganger Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, I'm so glad you've vibed with it ! FSR was such a trip both game wise but also production-wise for this vid'. Actual factual meta-contextual journey of figuring out why I had so much trouble making a sequel video to a game I loved, ended up in fact becoming about said sequel anxiety. I'm hoping to keep that sort of format and pacing for the future. ; w ;
@Hunterverse Жыл бұрын
@@maraganger I think that anxiety is always going to be there, no matter what you're making. Though as long as you make things how you want them to be, I'm sure you will always find the right way forward. You're kicking ass right now and I know you'll keep it up.

Well, I recently play Kill The Past titles (Silver Case, 25th Ward, FSR and Killer7) and now that I saw your videos, I have to say that I totally agree with your point of view on them. You really understood what a video game can be and how this medium can be use by the creator to make a unique experience. And you don't focus only on the style or depth of those games but both, which is really great to see. Now we only have to wait for a Twilight Syndrom fan translation, I saw a spanish one in work. Maybe they are hope for a english one. Bref, franchement c'est stylé.
