Currently having an existential crisis about whether my use of mixolydian b2 b6 evokes the spirit of the camel 😂

Every mode sounds like camel to me. I like mixolydian b2 b6 (Phrygian Dominant) because it gives me two major chords a half step apart on the 1 and b2 of the scale, which can be used to great effect.

My favorite pattern in remembering the modes when I was listening that I discovered was: Aeolian #7 Locrian #6 Ionian #5 Dorian #4 Phrygian #3 Lydian #2 Mixolydian #1 Obv when the note is flat from the major mode, # makes it natural. I.e. Locrian #6 means Locrian natural six, etc. Melodic Minor has a similar pattern I found Ionian b3 Dorian b2 Phrygian b1 Lydian b7 Mixolydian b6 Aeolian b5 Locrian b4 Cringe #1 and b1, but the pattern is cool.

Hey I Love the Camel, of course I don't refer to it as such. Very mystical. I Love Exotic sounding scales. Speaking of which, is that why you left out the Phrygian Dominant mode. How do you teach HM modes and leave out the Phrygian Dominant? Do they not use it in Jazz? Good, I Love it even more now, Oh wait, you're calling it the Mixolydian b2 b6. You dont find that odd since it is in the Phrygian position and also since its the Mixolydian mode which gets its Tonic altered not the Phrygian. Friggin Jazz whatever

Funnily, I know that mode (the fifth mode) as the Jewish scale, that's what we always referred to it in my bands.
@Voitcu

@@radiozelaza Its usually attributed to Middle Eastern which I guess counts the Semites but to me it sounds even more Egyptian than the Egyptian scale, probably because Im not as good with the Egyptian scale lol Im referring to the Double harmonic major aka the Byzantine scale which Rick Beato often insists is the Darkest Mode. Some consider other scales Egyptian. I dont see how flatting the Pentatonics minor 3rd makes it an Egyptian scale. How can you have Mystical without half steps? It sounds more Asian to me, as do Pentatonics in general. Another cool thing about the Egyptian scale is if you play it from the 4th scale degree becomes the Hungarian Gypsy. Kinda works the way Phrygian Dominant does to its HM. Its not stressed often enough that when playing outside of Diatonics, namely the major scale modes, that music works on an entirely different set of rules, as opposed to the Classical Harmonic Function. But there are other peculiarities between Egypt and Gypsy. They share similar letters, Gypsies are said to be descendants of Egypt, and Tarot cards are also attributed to both. Originated in Egypt and the Gypsies would reintroduce them in Europe. No wonder they also share the same Scale. And what cultures have been more mystical than these two? To call it the Camel is such a disgrace. I dont see camels when I hear the magic of these mystical scales. I see Crystal Balls, Dragons, Sword fights, and the occasional belly dancer, I'll give you that. Which is bad enough without forcing in Camels as well lol Theres a lot of things I respect about Jazz, but lack of Melody and every chord falling on the down beat are not two of them. Who cares how spicy a chord is if you can predict its rhythm. I love exotic scales because they paint a clearer picture. They have a richer style. They are characteristically identifiable. It seems like most music is just trying to be as subtle, neutral and sterile as possible. When you hear modern Jazz or any Major Scale modes Im curious to know what pictures does it paint in your head. Because to me all I can think of is Old McDonald and Mary had a Little Lamb. Just sounds really corny to me lol

He didn’t leave out the Phrygian Dominant mode! Phrygian Dominant is just Mixolydian ♭2 ♭6(or Phrygian ♮3)… I don’t know why he didn’t call it by its most common name. He also did the same thing for Dorian ♯4, whose name is just Ukrainian Dorian or the Romanian scale. It’s the mode used by Disney’s “Arabian Nights.” He also called Ultralocrian “Super Locrian.” There’s actually a different mode called Super Locrian that is a mode of the Melodic Minor scale, and it’s actually more useable than Ultralocrian is.

8:38 … you need to call this mode “super locrian bb7”, or whatever … you can’t just call it “super locrian”, because that’s something else (the 7th mode of melodic minor) … so it’s a big difference, really …
