Hey all, adventures in conveyer belting galore haha. BTW if it isn't obvious, the assembly in the video is only a temporary test rig, none of the office packing tape, nylon strings or lightweight fibre board will enter the MMX, just to clarify. I have to CAD the intro and outro attachments to the conveyer and wanted to do that after seeing how the marble behaved IRL so I built the test rig. I kind of like the look of it though. Free energy machine- esque! Enjoy, and have a great day, good luck with everything you do all best/ Martin

Hey Martin, I'm know you are getting so many compliments. But I just wanted to give you and your mmx team one myself. I suffer with severe depression and anxiety. I find it hard to find joy in the simple things and have motivation in life. But your videos every Wednesday gives me excitement and joy. Everytime you throw in a well timed song or crack a joke about yourself or the project I find myself laughing and smiling. As if you're talking to me, and my heart directly. Your work on mmx excites me and motivates me to keep pushing forward to make greatness happen. Just as you are doing. Please keep up the work and keep the videos coming. I look forward to one day seeing a finished product but also in a way, fear the end of these amazing Wintergatan Wednesday videos. I hope one day I can see you on tour and see the mmx machine live. From my heart to yours and your teams, thank you. I dont think you realize how much of an impact these videos actually make. But it impacts my week greatly. Thank you thank you. Peace, love, and happiness, Jake

Funny thing but this is the exact reason why we can't rebuild the Apollo Saturn V rockets even though we have all the original plans. There were so many ad-hoc fixes and small modifications during assembly that were never documented by the engineers that there's just no way we can repeat the process. So, Martin, document your changes in the original CAD designs, you never know when somebody will need to rebuild the Marble Machine X :)

Can I say you need a metal lathe someday? Even turning wood on a metal lathe is fun work, it's slow for curves on a manual lathe but it's fun! Also, I think the long arms for the reciprocating movement aren't really pistons, they are more like connecting rods. I might be wrong but I think the connecting rods is the proper term for a part that convert rotational movement into reciprocating movement (or vice versa probably).

Nah he doesn't need a metal lathe. Besides, plenty of people with lathes which he could outsource these kind of jobs to! Lathes are not expensive, but the tooling easily runs into the thousands of euros. And you always need what you don't own yet, making it a pricey hobby.

@@lukasdon0007 For what he's doing, a simple $600 benchtop metal lathe from AliExpress would probably suffice (just don't go too cheap). I'm thinking of getting one myself for making replacement parts such as bearing housings, etc.

That is mechanical poetry. It's painful that the front surfaces of the acryllic pieces won't stay ultra clear like that, because marbles rub on them. Remember to shoot closeup footage while it's new.

how quickly will the acrylic marble racks wear out? Seems like a very soft material.
@ashtonaimes2299
@ashtonaimes2299 5 жыл бұрын
Kanal Frump The marbles are metal and the acrylic is plastic so logic would suggest that the clear finish won’t last too long, but because the marbles are spheres and are only contacting the lifters at one tiny point. So the affected surface would probably look like a thin line on each piece, and probably not very visible, also the machine is very precise, so I don’t think there will be many stray marks to mar the aesthetics
@jimstanley_49
@jimstanley_49 5 жыл бұрын
@@ashtonaimes2299 Wear doesn't stop just because you've broken the surface a tiny bit. It'll start as a thin line, but once you have a small line the marble has more surface it's touching, and eventually, the line will become an unsightly groove. The marbles are going to be hitting and pressing against the acrylic more or less continuously while the machine is running. Martin may want to have a few spare chains with fresh acrylic just for aesthetics, depending on how it wears.
@esa062
@esa062 5 жыл бұрын
Wear shouldn't become a functional issue any time soon. Smooth metal and plastic surfaces are quite durable together. But the surface goes cloudy. It will still look good, just not magical like this.

The way to promote interesting designs is to impose a hard restriction on a project. For you, that's the overall aesthetics of the MMX, and that restriction is paying out in spades. It's been a fascinating ride watching this project go from inception to fruition and you go from hobbyist woodworker to full blow shop engineer. Even though I'm saddened by this project coming to an end, I know your wonderful and mysterious mind will move you into the next project to trudge through a new trade further widening your already impressive skillset. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors, Martin, you're a true jack-of-all-trades and an inspiration.
